Evaluation of the testicular toxicity caused by 2-bromopropane in rats (랫드에 있어서 2-bromopropane에 의해 유발된 정소독성의 평가)

  • It has been recently reported that 2-bromopropane (2-BP) induces male reproductive toxicity in both human and experimental animals. However, delayed effects of 2-BP on male reproductive system have not been investigated in detail. The present study was conducted to investigate the testicular toxicity of 2-BP and to determine the recovery of normal spermatogenesis in Sprague-Dawley rats. Male rats aged 5 weeks were administered 1,000mg/kg 2-BP by gavage daily for 4 weeks and sacrificed sequentially at 1, 2, 3, 4 and 12 weeks after initiation of 2-BP treatment. Testicular toxicity was evaluated qualitatively by histopathological examinations and quantitatively by reproductive organ weights, spermatid head count, and repopulation index. In the 2-BP treated rats, the body weights was significantly suppressed and the weights of testes and epididymides were also decreased in a time-dependent manner. On histopathological examination, spermatogonia in stages I-VI and preleptotene and leptotene spermatocytes in stages VII-IX were strongly depleted at 1 week of dosing. Spermatogonia were depleted extensively in all spermatogenic stages at 2 weeks. Continuing with the evolution of spermatogenic cycle, zygotene spermatocytes, pachytene spermatocytes, and round spermatids were sequentially depleted at 2, 3, and 4 weeks of dosing due to the depletion of their precursor cells. Vacuolization of Sertoli cells and spermatid retention were also observed at all time points, suggesting that 2-BP induced Sertoli cell dysfunction. At 12 weeks, after 8 weeks recovery, most of the tubules appeared severely atrophic and were lined by Sertoli cells only. Leydig cell hyperplasia in the interstitial tissue was also found. In addition, dramatic reductions in the number of spermatid heads and repopulation index were observed, indicating that 2-BP-induced testicular injury is irreversible. These results indicate that 4 weeks repeated-dose of 1,000mg/kg 2-BP results in a progressive germ cell loss due to the depletion of spermatogonia followed by long-term testicular atrophy in SD rats.

Photopolymerization of Reactive Oligomers and Methacrylate/SBS Blends (반응성 올리고머 및 메타아크릴레이트/SBS 블렌드의 광중합)

  • The kinetics of photoinitiated polymerization of reactive oligomer methacrylates and oligomer methacrylate/SBS blends have been studied to characterize the diffusion-controlled reaction using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy-Attenuated Total Reflectance (ATR-FTIR). The polymerization rates of reactive oligomer methacrylates and oligomer methacrylate/SBS blends were autocatalytic in nature at the initial stage and then a retardation of the reaction conversion occurred gradually as the polymer matrix became vitrified, and finally the reaction became diffusion controlled. Photopolymerization behavior of methacrylate/SBS blends was well predicted using the diffusion-controlled reaction model. N-Vinyl-2-pyrrolidinone (NVP) as a reactive solvent was used to incorporate SBS into methacrylate to form semi-IPN via photopolymerization. Due to the high reactivity of NVP, polymerization rate increased with the increase of NVP content. As the content of NVP-SBS in the blends increased up to 10 phr, the reaction conversion maintained almost constant. But above 20 phr of NVP-SBS in the blends, the reaction conversion gradually decreased since the increase of viscosity affected on the photopolymerization rate. The semi-IPN films of methacrylate/SBS blends were transparent at room temperature as well as at increased temperature and were able to be applied to surface coating.

A Dielectric Slab Rotman Lens (유전판 로트맨 렌즈)

  • A new type of a Rotman lens is presented in this paper fur millimeter-wave applications, such as collision avoidance radar. A dielectric slab Rotman lens is proposed to reduce the conductor loss and to create an appropriate farm for favorable implementation at millimeter-wave frequency. The proposed lens consists of a dielectric slab and slot lines whereas the conventional lenses are constructed with parallel conducting plates. The dielectric slab Rotman lens excited in TE$\_$0/ mode shows a high degree of confinement for the fields, low dispersion, and has an appropriate feed structure. A prototype lens has been designed and fabricated with 9 beam ports and 9 array ports together with 9 tapered slot antennas. This lens has been tested in the range from 10 GHz to 15 GHz and the measured beam widths are about 15$^{\circ}$ at 13 GHz. The measurements also show low mutual coupling between beam ports and an efficiency of about 34.6 %. The overall performance is comparable to that of conventional Rotman lenses even though the prototype was tested at lower than desired frequencies in the microwave frequency range due to our limited resources for fabrications and measurements. It is expected that at millimeter-wave frequency the dielectric slab Rotman lens will have lower conductor loss and lower mutual coupling than conventional Rotman lenses.an lenses.

  • The concentrations of tocopherols and compositions of fatty acids during germination and maturation of soybean seeds were determined by HPLC and GC. In germination stages, when the length of seedling axis was about 10 cm, the contents of total tocopherols and lipids were the highest. At the early phase of pod filling on field condition, the concentration of ${\delta}-tocopherol$ in soybean seeds was the highest, but, in further pod filling, the content of ${\delta}-tocopherol$ decreased continuously, and ${\alpha}-$ and ${\gamma}-tocopherol$ increased. Accumulation of oil during pod filling seems to be determined at the beginning. There seem positive correlations between several tocopherol homologues and fatty acids.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary seleno-yeast on histological response in juvenile olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus. Fish averaging $4.0{\pm}0.1g$ (mean ${\pm}$ SD) were fed one of the four semi-purified diets containing 0.56, 1.07, 2.86 and 4.56 mg Selenoyeast/kg diet ($Se_{0.56}$, $Se_{1.07}$, $Se_{2.86}$ and $Se_{4.56}$, respectively) in triplicates for 12 weeks. Swelling of blood cell in glomerulus, the rupture of some epithelial cell in the renal tubules and enlarged macrophage were observed in the $Se_{1.07}$ group. The hepatopancreas had hepatic cell, capillary and zymogen in the pancreas and was normal in the $Se_{0.56}$ group. Swelling of hepatocyte gradually decreased with increase in selenoyeast supplementation. The gill lamellae showed partial abnormal condition (terminal clubbing) in the $Se_{0.56}$ group, but there were little differences between these and other treatments. These results indicated that the optimum dietary supplementation level of selenoyeast in juvenile olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus, could be less than 1.07 mg selenoyeast/kg diet based on histological responses of the fish.

Histochemical and Cytochemical Studies on the Secondary Xylem Formation during Grafting Process of Pinus thunbergii (접목 과정에서 형성된 신생 2차목부의 조직학적, 세포화학적 연구)

  • Grafted tissues were investigated using various microscopic techniques. Pinus thunbergii was used as stock and scion and autografted by cleft graft method. Histochemically, grafting processes can be proceeded by four stages: 1) formation of necrotic layer, 2) proliferation of callus, 3) development of neo-cambium from callus, and 4) restoration of new vascular xylem. Necrotic la yer composed of pectin and lignin was gradually degraded during grafting process and disappeared when new union was formed between stock and scion. A large number of starch and lipid bodies in the cytoplasm were also gradually degraded during grafting process and disappeared at the grafting interface. Nucleus and plasmodesmata were not changed. Bubble-like callus was generated from all living parenchyma cells and from the callus. The tracheary elements differentiated from the callus had either reticulate or pit-like thickenings in the secondary walls with bordered pits. Secondary cell wall thickening occurred toward filing to the void parts between reticulated secondary wall. Tracheids formed in the secondary xylem were short with irregular wall thickness. New secondary xylem cells with swirled shapes, which developed in graft union were oriented horizontally and obliquely to axis of the stem.

Effect of composition on the structural and thermal properties of TiZrN thin film (TiZrN 박막의 조성이 구조적 특성 및 열적 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • The effect of chemical composition on the structural and thermal properties of TiZrN thin films was studied. As the Zr fraction in the deposited TixZr1-xN (x = 0.87, 0.82, 0.7, 0.6, and 0.28) increased, microstructural changes consisted of reduction in the grain size and a gradual transition from columnar structure to granular structure were observed. In addition, it was also confirmed that a gradual crystal phase transition from TiN to TiZrN has occurred as the Zr fraction increased up to 0.4. After heat treatment at 900℃, Ti0.82Zr0.18N and Ti0.7Zr0.3N layers were converted to a form in which rutile phase TiO2 and TiZrO4 oxides coexist, while Ti0.6Zr0.4N layer was converted to TiZrO4 oxide. Among the five compositions of TiZrN films, the Ti0.6Zr0.4N showed the best high temperature stability and produced a significant enhancement in the thermal oxidation resistance of Inconel 617 through suppressing the surface diffusion of Cr caused by thermal oxidation of the Inconel 617 substrate.

  • The progressive wear of teeth is a physiologic process of aging, but excessive wear can lead to occlusal disharmony, tooth sensitivity and pulp exposure, decreased masticatory efficiency, and aesthetic problems. It should be treated by evaluating the cause of tooth wear and establishing a stable centric relation with appropriate vertical dimension of occlusion and occlusal plane. The present case report successfully rehabilitated a full-mouth case of a severely worn dentition with the use of digital facebow transfer and virtual articulator.

  • Pulse electrokinetic technology is proposed for improving the dewatering-process from clay-sandy soil. Proposed electrokinetic technology is to be the dewatering process due to fluid movement of current flow for the stability of clay-sandy soils. Samples produced in this study were completed to verify the proposed performance for 7 days by gradually increasing the pressure to the final pressure of 30 psi ($2.11kgf/cm^2$) through the compression process. In this study, pulse electrokinetic treatment and conventional continuous electrokinetic treatment are tested and observed, respectively. The condition of continuous electrokinetic treatment is a continuous process during 48 hours. And the condition of pulse electrokinetic treatment system is to interrupt the power three times for 48 hours, every 8 hours. These treatments are that the voltage gradient is 3 V/cm. As a result, the efficiency of pulse electrokinetic is similar to the continuous electrokinetic. The power consumption efficiency of pulse electrokinetic is better than continuous electrokinetic.

Parasympathetic Modulation Plays a Key Role in Initiation of Paroxysmal Atrial Fibrillation

  • Background : An acceleration or deceleration of the heart rate (HR), which reflects autonomic effects, is observed before the onset of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF). The purpose of this study was to assess the discrepancy in the autonomic interactions before the onset of PAF for different patterns of change in the HR. Materials and Methods : From 105 Holter tapes with the PAF recorded, 55 episodes (42 patients, 34 men, $58{\pm}12$ years) of PAF (>5 min), preceded by a sinus rhythm for more than 1 hour, were selected and submitted to time-domain and frequency-domain HR variability analyses. Fifty-five episodes were divided into 2 groups: group A PAF (n=30) with acceleration of the HR during the last 2 minutes before the PAF and group B (n=25) with deceleration of the HR. Results : A significant linear decrease in the mean R-R interval was observed in group A ($924{\pm}30$ to $835{\pm}28ms$, $P$=0.001) and an increase from $831{\pm}32$ to $866{\pm}31ms$ in group B PAF episodes ($P$=0.046). In the frequency-domain analyses, the LF/HF ratio exhibited a progressive linear increase before the PAF in group A ($P$=0.005). The HF normalized units (HFnu) and natural logarithm-transformed HF ($In$HF) values decreased from $30.8{\pm}4.0$ to $16.1{\pm}1.8$ ($P$=0.003) and $4.49{\pm}0.25$ to $4.07{\pm}0.22$ ($P$=0.001), respectively. Contrary to the results in group A, a significant increase in the HF components (HFnu and $In$HF) (from $22.6{\pm}3.2$ to $30.2{\pm}4.0$, $P$=0.005, and $4.27{\pm}0.27$ to 4.75 0.33, $P$=0.001, respectively) and a resultant decrease in the LF/HF ratio were observed in group B PAF episodes. No significant changes were observed in the LF components in either PAF group. Conclusion : Autonomic stimuli leading to an acceleration or deceleration of the HR before the onset of AF are due to parasympathetic modulation. Parasympathetic modulation plays a key role in the initiation of PAF.
