  • The increased demand and consumption of coal has intensified problems associated with disposal of solid waste generated in utilization of coal. Major utilization of coal by-products has been in construction-related applications. Since fly ash accounts for the part of the production of utility waste, the majority of scientific investigations have focused on its utilization in a multitude of use, while little attention has been directed to the use of bottom ash. As a consequence of this neglect, a large amount of bottom ash has been stockpiled. However, the need to obtain safe and economical solution for its proper utilization has been more urgent. The study presented herein is designed to ascertain the performance characteristics of bottom ash, as autoclaved lightweight foamed concrete product. The laboratory test results indicated that tobermorite was generated when bottom ash was used as materials for hydro-thermal reaction. According to the analysis of variance, at the fresh state, water ratio affects on flow and slurry density of autoclaved lightweight foamed concrete, but foam ratio influences on slurry density, while, at the hardened state, foam ratio affects on the density of dry and the compressive strength but doesn't affect on flexural and tensile strength. In the results of response surface analysis, to obtain target performance, the most suitable mix condition for lightweight foamed concrete using bottom ash was water ratio of 70$\sim$80% and foaming ratio of 90$\sim$100%.

  • This research was performed to investigate the mechanical performance of lightweight concrete including phase changing material(Low temperature PCM). Micro capsulised PCM consisted of wax type core and melamine based wall. Also, for PCM of one single kind, paraffin wax was inserted into Vermiculite and the surface was coated with melamine resin. Interfacial polymerization is based on the principle that macromolecule reaction takes place on the surfaces between 1-dodecanol(core material) and water (solvent) to form the wall material. Lightweight concrete has compressive strength of 10 MPa, tensile strength of 1.5 MPa, and oven dried density of 1.0kg/liter which included 10%, 20%, or 30% PCM by weight. To do so, this study fabricated light-weight foamed concrete ($1.0kg/m^3$) in pre-foaming method and mixed it with PCM micro capsule of 1-dodecanol and melamine to examine its physical properties.

  • The purpose of this study to investigate the bond strength of recycled coarse aggregate concrete deteriorated by freezing and thawing. Concrete specimens with recycled coarse aggregate representing lower limit of the quality standard (water absorption : 3.0%, specific gravity : $2.5g.cm^3$) were manufactured and tested. The replacement ratio (0, 30, 60 and 100%) of recycled coarse aggregate and freezing-thawing cycles were considered in this test. From the test results, it was found that the bond strength of normal strength concrete is not affected by the replacement ratio of recycled coarse aggregate under freezing and thawing conditions. Also, the bond strength of the natural and recycled coarse aggregate concrete using AE admixtures was not decreased by frost action.

  • In this study, as a method to increase the recycling of circulating fluidized bed combustion ash(CFBCA), CFBCA was utilized to produce autoclave aerated concrete product since CFBCA contains quicklime and calcium sulfate components that are required for the manufacture of autoclave aerated concrete. Successful achievement of such objective will bring cost reduction with high value addition, saving of natural resources, and the reduction of environmental load. Various mixing designs were designed to evaluate the properties of autoclave aerated concrete made of CFBCA. Based on series of experimental program, prototypes mix design for factory manufacturing was obtained. According to the experimental results, it was confirmed that gypsum can be replaced with CFBCA through the method of pre-treating the CFBCA as a slurry. It was possible to produce competitive autoclave aerated concrete products using CFBCA.

  • The present study prepared lightweight foam-soil concrete mixtures classified into three groups. Considering the sustainablility, workability, and compressive strength development of such concrete, high-volume supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) were used as follows: 20% cement, 15% fly ash, and 65% ground granulated blast-furnace slag. As main test parameters selected for achieving the compressive strength of 1MPa and dry density of $1,000kg/m^3$, the unit solid content (dredged soil and binder) ranged between 900 and $1,807kg/m^3$, and soil-to-binder ratio varied between 3.0 and 7.0. Test results revealed that the flow of the lightweight foam-soil concrete tended to decrease with the increase of unit soil content. The compressive strength of such concrete increased with the increase with the unit binder content, whereas it decreased as soil-to-binder ratio increased, indicating that the compressive strength can be formulated as a function of its dry density and soil-to-binder ratio.

  • These days the amount of demolished concrete waste has been increasing due to reconstruction and redevelopment of aged buildings. So the use of recycled aggregates is recommended to solve environmental problems. Some investigations have been carried out to study the flexural behavior of reinforced concrete beams with recycled aggregates. But these have some limitation due to the use of low quality recycled aggregates and small-scale specimens in the laboratory. The purpose of this experimental study is to evaluate the flexural behavior of simply supported RC beams subjected to four-point monotonic loading and made with recycled aggregates. Seven full-scale RC beams were manufactured with different replacement level of recycled aggregates. The main parameters of the study are combination of aggregates. From the test results, the flexural behavior of the beam is described in terms of crack patterns and failure modes. And the flexural strength of RC beam with different types of recycled coarse aggregates and recycled fine aggregates is compared with the provision of KCI code.

  • Due to the recent shortage of well-graded river sand resulting from a rapid growth of concrete construction, sea sand, crushed sand, and etc. are increasingly used instead. It is, however, well noted that non-washed sea sand leads to corrosion of the reinforcing steel in concrete, and thus eventually results in damage to concrete. Also, the crushed sand is not being widely used, since it is difficult to maintain the allowable amount of passing 0.08mm sieve and to adjust grading. On the other hand, because the fine sand of Nakdong-River has a poor grading but good quality as a fine aggregate for concrete, it is strongly needed to investigate the fine sand as an alternative fine aggregate. Thus, the purpose of this research is to evaluate the physical properties of the fine sand of Nakdong-River to utilize it actively as a fine aggregate. For this purpose, after the sand samples were collected according to typical location of main stream of Nakdong-River, the physical properties such as density in oven-dry condition, grading, unit volume mass, and etc. of them were estimated. It was observed from the test results that physical properties of the fine sand of Nakdong-River except grading were found to be excellent.

  • This study is analysis of the utilization as a concrete fine aggregate on CGS, a by-product of Integrated coal gasification combined cycle(IGCC). That is, in KS F 2527 "Concrete aggregate," properties of 1~12times to CGS were evaluated, focusing on quality items corresponding to natural aggregate sand(NS) and melted slag aggregate sand(MS). As a result, the distribution of grain shape, safety and expansion were all satisfied with KS standards by physical properties, but the quality was unstable at 7~12times of water absorption ratio and absolute dry density. The particle size distribution was unstable due to asymmetry distribution of coarse particles, and particles were too thick for 7~12times. The passing ratio of 0.08mm sieve was also out of the KS standard at part factor of 7~12times, but chloride content, clay contents, coal and lignite were all satisfactory. Meanwhile, chemical composition was satisfactory except for $SO_3$ in 1~6times, and content and amount of harmful substances were all within the specified value except for F in 7~12times. As a result of SEM analysis, the surface quality and porosity were 7~12times more than 1~6times, and it was the quality was degraded. Therefore, it is necessary to reduce the quality deviation by using separate measures in order to utilize it as concrete aggregate in the future, and if it is premixed with fine quality aggregate, it will contribute positively to solve aggregate supply shortage and utilize circulation resources.
