Air lift pump operated by buoyancy is mainly used for the continuous circulation and the purification of fluids. In this study, the computational flow analysis has been performed with the geometric and operating conditions of the air lift pump. The numerical data from the analysis have been verified by comparing with the previous experimental data. The following results are obtained which advance the efficiency of the air lift pump. As the submergence length of pipe increases and the pipe length over the water surface decreases, the non-dimensional mass flow ratio increases in both cases. When the position of the air injection hole is within the pipe, the circulation range of the surrounding fluid becomes widened with the distance between the air injection hole and the pipe inlet relatively becoming narrower. It is more efficient both when the air injection velocity is at 10 m/s and at 15 m/s, and when the diameter of the pipe with holes is doubled near the water surface. It is expected that these results can be provided as fundamental data for operating the air lift pump.
We analyzed the low wall-shear stress area in the intracranial aneurysm that occurred at an anterior communicating artery with a special emphasis on vortical structures close to the wall. We reconstructed the aneurysm model from patient CTA data. We assumed blood as an incompressible Newtonian fluid and treated the blood vessel as a solid wall. The pulsatile boundary condition was applied at the inlet of the anterior cerebral artery. From the instantaneous flow field, we computed the histogram of the wall-shear stress over the aneurysm wall and found the low wall-shear stress event (< 0.4 Pa). This extreme event was due to the low wall-shear stress area that occurred at the daughter sac. We found that the merging of two vortices induced the low wall-shear stress area; one arises from the morphological characteristics of the daughter sac, and the other is formed by a jet flow into the aneurysm sac. The latter approaches the daughter sac, which ultimately leads to the strong ejection event near the daughter sac.
Knowledge of airflow characteristics in nasal cavities is essential to understand the physiological and pathological aspects of nasal breathing. Several studies have utilized physical models of the healthy nasal cavity to investigate the relationship between nasal anatomy and airflow. In our laboratory, there have been a series of experimental investigations on the nasal airflow in normal, abnormal, and deformed nasal cavity models cavity models by PIV under both constant and periodic flow conditions. In this time normal and several deformed nasal cavity models, which simulate surgical operation, Turbinectomy, are investigated numerically by the FVM general purpose code and PIV analysis. The comparisons of these results are appreciated. Dense CT data and careful treatment of model surface under the ENT doctor's advice provide more sophisticated cavity models. The Davis (LaVision Co.) code is used for PIV flow analysis. Average and RMS distributions have been obtained for inspirational and expirational nasal airflows in the normal and deformed nasal cavities.

A sound understanding of the structural characteristics of fractured rock masses is important in designing and maintaining earth structures because their strength, deformability, and hydraulic behavior depend mainly on the characteristics of discontinuity network structures. Despite considerable progress in understanding the structural characteristics of rock masses, the complexity of discontinuity patterns has prevented satisfactory analysis based on a 3-D rock mass visualization model. This paper presents the results of studies performed to develop rock mass visualization in 3-D to analysis the mechanical and hydraulic behavior of fractured rock masses. General and particular solutions of non-linear equations of disk-shaped fractures have been derived to calculated lines of intersection and equivalent pipes. Also, program modules have been developed to perform the calculations. The procedures developed for the 3-D fractured rock mass visualization model can be used to characterize rock mass geometry and network systems effectively. The results obtained in this study will be refined and then combined for use as a tool for assessing geomechanical problems related to strength, deformability and hydraulic behaviors of the fractured rock masses.

We are planning to construct a scaled-down moderator facility to simulate the CANDU-6 moderator circulation phenomena during steady state operating and accident conditions. In the present work a preliminary experiment using a 1/40 scaled-down moderator tank has been performed to investigate the anticipated problems of the flow visualization and measurement in the planning scaled-down moderator facility. We shortly describe CFD analysis result for the 1/40 scaled-down test model and the flow measurement techniques used for this test facility under isothermal flow conditions. The Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) method is used to visualize and measure the velocity field of water in a transparent Plexiglas tank. Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence (PLIF) technique is used to evaluate the feasibility of temperature field measurement in the range of $20-40^{\circ}C$ of water temperature using an one-color method.
Three major physiological functions of nose can be described as air-conditioning, filtering and smelling. Detailed knowledge of airflow characteristics in nasal cavities is essential to understanding of the physiological and pathological aspects of nasal breathing. In our laboratory, a series of experimental investigations have been conducted on the airflows in normal and abnormal nasal cavity models by means of PIV under both constant and periodic flow conditions. In this work, more specifically experimental and numerical results on the surgically modified inferior turbinate model were presented. With the high resolution CT data and a careful treatment of the model surface under the ENT doctor's advice yielded quite sophisticated cavity models for the PIV experiment. Physiological nature of the airflow was discussed in terms of velocity distribution and vortical structure for constant inspirational flow. Since the inferior and middle turbinate are key determinants of nasal airflow, the turbinectomy obviously altered the main stream direction. This phenomenon may cause local changes in physiological function and the flow resistance.

Oral cancer surgery typically consists of resection of lesion, neck dissection and reconstruction, and it has an impact on the position of hyoid bone. Therefore, morphological change of airway can occur since the geometric parameter of airway is correlated with the hyoid bone. Airflow is affected by geometry of the airway. In this study, flow characteristics were compared between pre- and post-surgery models by both particle image velocimetry (PIV) and numerical simulation. 3D model of upper airway was reconstructed based on CT data. Velocity is accelerated by the reduced channel area, and vortex and recirculation region are observed in pre- and post-surgery models. For the post-surgery model, high pressure distribution is developed by significantly decreased hydraulic diameter, and the longitudinal flow stream is also interrupted.
In the fan module of the intercooling refrigerator, a drain hole structure was designed for stable drainage of defrost water. However, the airflow passing through the drain hole can disturb flow features around the evaporator. Since this backflow leads to an increase in flow loss, the accurate experimental and numerical analyses are important to understand the flow characteristics around the fan module. Considering the complex geometry around the fan module, three different turbulence models (Standard k-ε model, SST k-ω model, Reynolds stress model) were used in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis. According to the quantitative and qualitative comparison results, the Standard k-ε model was most suitable for the research object. High-accuracy results well match with the experiment result and overcome the limitation of the experiment setup. The method used in this study can be applied to a similar research object with an orifice outflow driven by a rotating blade.
An electrostatic precipitator (ESP) is an industrial post processing facility for high efficiency dust mitigation. Uniformity of the flow passing through the inlet duct leading into the main chamber is important for efficient reduction of dust. To examine flow uniformity, this study conducted a numerical analysis of the flow within a scale-down ESP inlet duct. Magnetic resonance velocimetry (MRV) results from a prior study were utilized to validate the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) numerical simulations. Both the experimental and computational results displayed a similar recirculation zone shape and normalized velocity profile near the duct outlet for the baseline geometry. To optimize the uniformity of the flow, the number of guide vanes was modified, and the guide vanes were partially extended straight upward. Design evaluation is done based on the outlet velocity distribution and mass flowrate balance between the two outlets. Simulation results indicate that the vane extension is critical for flow optimization in curved ESP ducts.
