  • A tip-over test of the 1/3 scale model is conducted to verify the tip-oner analysis of a dry concrete storage cask under a hypothetical accident condition. The tip-oner analysis is executed using the velocity at each point which are determined from the initial angular velocity as the initial conditions of the model just before the impact. To confirm the structural integrity of the canister of a dry concrete storage cask, the non-detective testing such as Liquid Penetrants testing and Ultrasonic Testing are conducted. The strains and tile accelerations acquired by the tip-over test are compared with those by the analysis to verify the tip-over analysis. The lid of a storage calk are plastically deformed at the impact point. Liquid

  • This study investigated survival, falling and structural changes of foot in Haliotis discus hannai with various water temperature and salinity. Experimental conditions were composed of control with $20^{\circ}C/33.5$ psu, higher temperature group with 23, 26, 29 and $32^{\circ}C$, lower temperature group with 3, 6, 9 and $12^{\circ}C$, and different salinities group with 33.5, 26.8, 20.1, 13.4, 6.7 and 3.3 psu. Experimental period was 7 days. Survival and falling rate of the abalone exposed to 7 days at control and experimental condition of $12^{\circ}C$ and $23^{\circ}C/33.5$ psu were 100% and 0%, respectively. Mortality and falling rate of the abalone exposed to the different temperature and salinity were dose dependent by experimental condition. Histopathological changes in epithelial and muscular layer of foot showed more obvious with experimental condition of salinity decrease than different temperature condition.

  • A test of the 1/3 scale model was conducted to verify the tip-over analysis of a dry. concrete storage cask under a hypothetical accident condition. The tip-over analysis was executed using the velocity at each point as the initial conditions of the model just before the impact. The initial velocity was determined from the initial angular velocity, which would make the equivalent kinetic energy to the potential energy. To confirm the structural integrity of the canister, the visual testing and the non-detective testings such as Liquid Penetrant testing and Ultrasonic Testing were conducted. The lid of a storage cask was plastically deformed near the impact point. The structural integrity of storage cask was maintained. To verify the tip-over analysis the strains and the accelerations acquired by the tip-over test were compared with those by the analyses. The results of the analysis were larger than the test results about two times.

  • We investigated the survival rate by water temperature and salinity, physiological rhythm and morphological change of live abalone to get to know optimum water temperature and salinity suitable for long-distance transportation of live abalone. At $8^{\circ}C$ and above, 96-100% of survival rate was shown at all experiment groups. At $6^{\circ}C$, 66% of abalones survived in normal seawater but they showed 0% of survival rate at $30{\pm}0.5psu$ and $26{\pm}0.5psu$ of salinity at the same water temperature. There was no significant difference of oxygen consumption rate for a week between the seawater and $30{\pm}0.5psu$. Also, a positive correlation was shown between salinity and water temperature and the oxygen consumption rate was slightly higher at $30{\pm}0.5psu$ than seawater. Thinned epithelial layers and expansion of lymph sinus were observed less than $30{\pm}0.5psu$ or below $6^{\circ}C$ of temperature. This result shows that the optimum level of water temperature and salinity is considered to be $6-8^{\circ}C$ and more than $30{\pm}0.5psu$ respectively.

  • A wheeled armored vehicle is a military vehicle that has been developed to enhance combat capabilities and mobility for the army. The wheeled armored vehicle has a high center of gravity, and it operates on unpaved and sloped roads. Therefore, this vehicle has a high risk of rollover crashes. To design the interior of the military vehicle, the crew's safety during rollover crashes is an important factor. However, actual vehicle tests for design are extremely expensive. In this paper, nonlinear dynamic analysis is performed to simulate the rollover crashes and the passenger injury is assessed for a wheeled armored vehicle. The scope of this research is the rollover condition, FE modeling of the wheeled armored vehicle and the dummy, arrangement of dummies, assessment of passenger injuries, and simulation model for rollover crashes.

  • Rollover is a major concern for vehicles with a higher center of gravity and for improving driving performance. This study investigates a tilting system to prevent rollover, which was successfully implemented for high-speed trains. It may be useful to apply the concept of the tilting system to a large truck such as a trailer. Even a small adjustment in the tilting angle can improve the driving stability during a steep turn. The equation of motion was derived from a dynamic model of the trailer with the tilting system. The balance of the centrifugal force and normal force determines the rollover critical speed for a given radius of the turn and load. To obtain a more conservative criterion, the rollover critical state was defined as the instant when any side wheel loses contact with the road. To actuate the tilting system, the optimal tilting angle must be calculated from the steering angle and the vehicle speed. Using a simplified model of a large truck, the effects of the tilting angle and load on the rollover critical speed were investigated.

  • This study looked into recovery rate and histological changes in the gills of juvenile abalone Haliotis discus hannai by exposure time (3, 6, 12, 24 and 48 h) of different water temperatures (15, 20 and $25^{\circ}C$) and salinities (30, 25, 20 and 15 psu) to understand reasons for the death of abalone exposed by low salinity water. In each water temperature, abalone spats that were exposed to low salinity water (less than 20 psu) for over 6 hours showed decrease in survival rate during recovery and those were exposed at the salinity of 15 psu for more than 24 hours all died. Histological observation showed expansion or damage of gills of the species which were exposed at less than 20 psu for over 6 hours. In case of abalones exposed at the salinity of 15 psu for over 24 hours, most gill tissues were destroyed. This result was glaringly obvious at a higher water temperature, lower salinity and longer exposure time. Accordingly, suffocation caused by damage of gills considered one of direct causes of the death.

  • The growth rates of offspring of selected abalone (SA), Haliotis discus hannai, population for rapid growth were compared to those of offsping of the control abalone (CA) at bred under the same condition. The growth traits (shell length, shell breadth and total weight) of SA were significantly faster than those of CA at this experiment. At the 45th day and 90th day, the growth rates in shell length of SA were estimated 31.7% and 17.8% faster than those of CA, total weight of SA were estimated 43.7% and 25.6%, respectively. Moreover, the relative growth rate between shell length and total weight of SA showed significant differences higher than one in CA at 90th day. The results suggest a possibility of improving the growth rate of cultured abalone using selection techniques.
