  • It is well known that oral appliance could improve respiratory difficulty in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). To evaluate the effect of oral appliance, polysomnography and cephalometry were performed in OSA patients before and after oral appliance was used. Twenty four OSA patients were included in this study. Respiratory difficulty index (RDI) was obtained from polysomnography and the movement of soft palate, tongue, posterior pharygeal wall, hyoid bone, and mandible and the variables of the facial pattern were measured on the cephalogram. The changes of cephalometric parameters were compared to the RDI changes and the correlation was tested. After oral appliance was used, RDI decreased from 46.8 to 13.3. There was significant relationship between RDI improvement and the anterior movement of the mandible and superior movement of the hyoid bone. In 8 patients whose RDI was most improved, RDI improvement rate was correlated with the anterior movement of the tongue and anterior-posterior (AP) diameter of the airway at the levels between the lower portion of the soft palate and epiglottis. These results could conclude that anterior movement of the tongue and superior movement of the hyoid bone would be favorable cephalometric parameters for the improvement of OSA.

  • For the last decade, the hi-directional testing method has been advantageous over the conventional pile load testing method in many aspects. However, because the hi-directional test uses a loading mechanism entirely different from that of the conventional pile load testing method, many investigators and practicing engineers have been concerned that the hi-directional test would give inaccurate results, especially about the pile head settlement behavior. Therefore, a hi-directional load test and the conventional top-down load test were executed on 1.5 m diameter cast-in-situ concrete piles at the same time and site. Strain gauges were placed on the piles. The two tests gave similar load transfer curves at various depth of piles. However, the top-down equivalent curve constructed from the hi-directional load test results predicted the pile head settlement under the pile design load to be about one half of that predicted by the conventional top-down load test. To improve the prediction accuracy of the top-down equivalent curve, a simple method that accounts for the pile compression is proposed. It was also shown that the strain gauge measurement data from the hi-directional load test could reproduce almost the same top-down curve.

  • Many adult diseases(cerebral apoplexy, athymiait, etc.) result from hypertension, blood circulation disturbance and increment of HBP. In early diagnosis of these diseases, MRI, X-ray and PET have been used rather aim for treatment than prevention of a disease. Since, cerebral apoplexy and athymiait have been caused to the regular/irregular persons, it is very important to measure HBP which has connection with cerebral blood low state. HBP has more diagnosis elements than that of BP. So, we can diagnose accurate hypertension by measuring of HBP. But, existing sphygmomanometers and automatic BP monitors can not measure HBF, and can not execute complex function(measuring of BP/HBP, blood flow improvement). The purpose of this paper is to develop the system and algorithm which can measure BP/HBP for accurate diagnosis. Also, we extracted diagnosis factors by the correlativity analysis of BP/HBP. The maximum pressure of HBP corresponds to 62% that of BP, the minimum pressure of HBP corresponds to 46% that of BP. Therefore, we developed the multi function automatic blood pressure monitor which can measure BP/HBP and improve cerebral blood flow state.

  • Effects of chitosan-soybean curd (prepared using chitosan as a coagulant), commercial soybean curd and chitosan powder on serum lipid metabolism were investigated with rats fed high-fat diet for 6 weeks. Food intake of experimental groups fed high-fat (HF), chitosan-soybean curd (CSC), soybean curd (SC), or chitosan powder (CP)diet was lower compared to t]tat of normal group. Body weight gain was lower in rats fed the CSC, SC and CP diets than in rats fed the HF diet. There was no significant difference in total cholesterol concentration among all groups, but HDL-cholesterol concentration was higher and LDL-cholesterol concentration was lower in rats fed the CSC, SC, CP diets than in rats fed the HF diet. Total lipid level was lower in rats fed the SC and CP diets than in rats fed the HF diet. Increment of triglyceride level and decrement of phospholipid level in rats fed the HF diet were recovered significantly by the CSC, SC and Cf diet. Our results indicate that chitosan-soybean curd prepared under the commercial processing condition may provide the beneficial effect on lipid metabolism even though its effect didn't show any significant difference compared to that of commercial soybean curd under the present experimental conditions.

  • The effects of three fuselage head shapes and nonplanar ground surface on the aerodynamic characteristics of FAST fuselages are investigated using a boundary element method. Wind tunnel test is also performed to validate the present method and to identify the wall effect on the frictional drag which cannot be analyzed using the present method. It is found that the channel has an effect of increasing the lift of those investigated fuselages. The optimal head shape depends on the design conditions of the FAST and its guideway channel. Comparing the calculated induced drag with the measured total drag, it can be concluded that the profile drag is independent of the ground height. Thus, the present numerical method can be applied to the conceptual design of the high-speed ground transporters if only the profile drag of the vehicle in free flight is assumed to be known.

  • The shape of the KHST, and of the power car in particular, is largely determined by aerodynamic considerations. At high speeds, air resistance accounts for the major part of overall resistance to forward motion. Further points to be considered are environmentally undesirable acoustic phenomena and pressure waves. Minimizing power requirements and environmentally-unfriendly noise and pressure waves are thus major objectives in the development of the KHST. When deciding on the aerodynamic design of the power car, the entire train set has to be taken into consideration. This paper describes the design process and results about the front shape of the KHST.

  • This study investigated the effects of Lavandula angustifolia (L. angustifolia) aroma on the brain electrical activity evaluated by an electroencephalogram (EEG) in the male adults since many researches were performed with females and few with males. Sleep quality of 35 male adults were analyzed by Pittsburgh sleep quality index, and they were divided into two groups of good sleep quality and poor sleep quality. EEG electrodes were attached at the frontal (F3, F4), temporal (T3, T4), occipital (O1, O2), and parietal (P3, P4) regions according to the International 10-20 system. EEG was measured for 3 min per each period of before, during, and after L. angustifolia aromatherapy. Subjects with good sleep quality showed increases in the delta power at the parietal region of both cerebral hemispheres and in the theta power at the temporal region of right hemisphere (p<0.05), and a decrease in the alpha at the parietal region of both cerebral hemispheres (p<0.05). And subjects with poor sleep quality showed increases in the delta power at the frontal region of left cerebral hemisphere and in the theta power at the frontal region of both hemispheres (p<0.05). It is concluded that L. angustifolia aroma has effects on decreasing an awakening status related-brain wave and increasing the sleep status related-brain waves in the male adults with good sleep quality, and has also effects on increasing the sleep status related-brain waves in the male adults with poor sleep quality.

  • Craniofrontonasal dysplasia(CFND), a rare congenital syndrome, is characterized by varying degrees of frontonasal dysplasia, craniosynostosis, and variable extracranial abnormalities. It was first reported by Cohen in 1979. The inheritance pattern is not straightforward. Although all modes of Mendelian inheritance have been suggested, the most plausible explanation is that this is an X-linked condition with the unusual situation of complete expression in females, and minimal to no expression in males. In our case, CFND was diagnosed in a female neonate who had unilateral coronal craniosynostosis, frontal bossing, orbital hypertelorism, broad nasal root, clefting nasal tip, corpus callosum agenesis and mild extremity abnormalities.
