  • This paper described the shear strengthening effect by deviator location in pre-damaged reinforced concrete (RC) beams strengthened with externally post-tensioning steel rods. Three reinforced concrete beams as control beam and eight post-tensioned beams using external steel rods were tested to fail in shear. The externally post-tensioning material was a steel rod of 22 mm diameter, and it had a 655 MPa yield strength and an 805 MPa tensile strength. Specimens depend on multiple variables, such as the number of deviators, location of deviator, and load pattern. The pre-damaged loads up to about 2/3 of ultimate shear capacities were applied to specimens using displacement control and the diagonal shear crack just occurred at these loading levels. And then, the post-tensioning up to when a strain of steel rod reaches about $2000{\mu}{\varepsilon}$ was continuously applied to beam. A displacement control was changed to a load control during post-tensioning. The post-tensioning resulted in increase of load-carrying capacity and restoration of existing deflection. Also, it prevented the existing diagonal cracks from excessively growing. Two deviators effectively improved the load capacity when compared with in case of test which one deviator at mid-span installed. When deviators were located near region which the diagonal crack occurred on, the strengthening impact by post-tensioning was greater.

  • On September 12, 2016, the Gyeongju District was strongly shaken with M=5.8, which was the largest one since measured by the actual seismometer in Korea, and some buildings were damaged. The field survey of reinforced concrete school buildings in the affected area was carried out, and their residual seismic capacities(R) were estimated based on the Japanese Standard for post-earthquake damage evaluation. In this study, the M school, which was greatly damaged by the 2016 Gyeongju Earthquake, was selected, and its damage level was evaluated on the basis of the Japanese Standard. The seismic capacity of the M school was also evaluated using the nonlinear dynamic analysis, and relationships between its damage level and seismic capacity was also conducted to investigate causes of earthquake damage. The damage level of M school was classified into light with R=88.2%. The result of the dynamic analysis agreed reasonably well with the damage of M school sustained by the 2016 Gyeongju earthquake. This will provide fundamental data for earthquake preparedness measures, such as the seismic rehabilitation of low-rise reinforced concrete buildings in Korea.

  • This study presents seismic responses of 5-story reinforced concrete structures retrofitted with the buckling-restrained braces using a time-dependent element. The time-dependent element having birth and death times can freely be activated within the user defined time intervals during the time history analysis. The buckling-restrained brace that showed the largest energy dissipation capacity among the test specimens in previous research was used for retrofitting the RC buildings in this study. It was assumed that the first story of the damaged building under the first earthquake was retrofitted with the buckling-restrained braces considered as the time-dependent element before the second of the successive earthquakes occurs. Under this assumption, this paper compares seismic responses of the RC structures with the time-dependent element subjected to the successive earthquake. Subjected to the second earthquake, it was observed that activation of the BRB systems largely decreases deformation of the moment frame where the damage was concentrated under the first earthquake. However, damages to the shear wall systems were increased after activation of the BRB systems. Since the cumulative damages of the shear wall systems were infinitesimal compared with the retrofit effect of the moment frame, the BRB system was effective under the successive earthquake.

  • This paper provides the results for experimental study on longitudinal shear performance for new-concept composite slabs embedded with silence insulator. Longitudinal shear capacity tests are used to predict characteristics of composite action between the concrete block, silence insulator and deckplate. A total set of 7 Push-Down specimens are tested to clarify the composite action between the concrete block, silence insulator and deckplate. Parameters in this study are the width of T-type bar, the depth of reinforced bar and the thickness of silence insulator. The results from experimental study on longitudinal shear capacity for new-concept composite slabs applied T-type bar, Reinforced bar and Silence insulator are summarized as follows. In test result, the Longitudinal Shear Capacity of the new concept specimen is 2 times excellent than basic specimen with safety. It is expected that applying the proposed composite slab detail at the actual site will provide a significant safety factor in structural aspect of the existing composite slab, and greatly contribute to the improvement capacities of resisting vibration and sound.

  • Recently the use of steel fibers has been increased in flexural members and columns of concrete structures subjected to cyclic loadings; such as bridge decks, highway roads, runway of airport, buildings, etc.. However only a few experimental tests have been carried out under fatigue loading. In the present study, the reinforced concrete beams with 1% and 2% steel fiber volume fraction are investigated with and without stirrups. It has been found that in fatigue tests, the failure of the beam is usually due to breaking of fibers rather than fiber pull-out. A comparison of experiments and numerical analysis using the nonlinear F.E.M. program (ADINA) is also presented herein.

  • This study investigates the structural behavior of cracked or uncracked RC columns retrofitted with CFS and evaluates the shear retrofit performance through experiment. Experimental works were conducted for sixth specimens varied in the adhesion method of CFS, the ratio of shear reinforcement bar, and the existence of crack before retrofitting. Throughout cyclic test, the strength, stiffness, failure modes, and ductility are discussed. The test results show that the retrofitting method with CFS improve the shear strength and ductility. The crack width below 2mm, occurred before retrofitting, didn't reduce the shear strengthening effect.

  • concrete deck bridges are increasingly aplied to twin- girder bridges and open-stel box girder bridges. One of the most dificult isues in the design of shear conect ors is the mater of achieving ful composite action. Many connectors in smal area require a significant section los of precast decks resulting in difficult reinforcement details. In this closer spacing than the required minimum spacing in the design codes was evaluated through static tests. Test results s howed that the ultimate strength decreased as the conector spacing was reduced. The strength enhancement was observed due to aditional reinforcement for precast slabs or for shear pockets. Thus, the design of group stud shear connection needs to anticipate failure modes and the conector failure should be induced. Based on the test results, an empirical equation consi dering stud spacing was proposed to evaluate the ultimate strength of group stud shear conection. Fatigue tests showed n o reduction in fatigue life of the group stud shear conection in the range of this research. Details of the precast decks wer e enhanced using the findings of the study.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the flexural strengthening effectiveness for the beams combined reinforced with NSM CFRP strips and EBR CFRP strips. To accomplish this objective, a total of nine concrete T beams were tested. From this study, it is found that the flexural stiffness and strength of the beams combined reinforced with NSM and EBR strips were significantly improved compared to the beams strengthened only with NSM CFRP strip. The maximum increase of flexural strength was 347% compared to the beam without CFRP strip. Failure of the beam combined reinforced with NSM and EBR strips (T shape) is initiated by debonding of EBR strips attached on the bottom face, and it was succeeded a part of separatio-n of NSM strips along the longitudinal direction and secondly failure of NSM strips was occurred, eventually sudden explosive failure with the separation of concrete cover in the shear region. This result shows that the NSM and EBR strips have good combination to resist applied load and the combined reinforcement with NSM and EBR strips can redistribute appropriately the total stress subjected concrete beam to the EBR and NSM strips.

  • The stress-strain relationship of polymer concrete flexural member was evaluated using C-shaped polyester concrete specimen, the compressive strength of which is 1400 kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$. Eccentric compression test was performed to estimate the parameters, ${\alpha}$, ${\beta}$1, ${\gamma}$ for equivalent rectangular stress block. The ultimate moment strength ware obtained from the bending test on reinforced polymer concrete beams which were prepared with S different tensile steel ratios with a shear span ratio of 4.0. These values were compared with theoretical ultimate moment strengths, which were obtained using the parameters ${\alpha}$=0.61 and ${\beta}$1=0.73 from stress-stain curves of C-shaped specimens. The results showed that, when tensile steel ratio was over 0.50 $\rho$b, the experimentally obtained moment strengths were well matched with theoretically calculated values. In order to develop accurate criteria for polymer concrete flexural members, however, many other expermental studies for parameter determination are necessary using C-shaped specimens which have various compressive strengths and different sizes.

  • In this paper, the structural properties of the existing reinforced concrete(RC) piers are surveyed and the major factors influencing the member strength and deformation capacity are identified. Also a seismic evaluation procedure of RC piers is presented. The factors controlling the member strength are the applied axial load, the reinforcement ratio and yield strength of longitudinal rebar for flexural strength, and the transverse reinforcement for shear strength. Member deformation capacity largely depends on transverse reinforcement ratio and anchor detail, and splice location of longitudinal reinforcement. The above structural detail should be investigated for the detail seismic evaluation of RC piers. The most of existing RC piers have inadequate transverse reinforcement anchor details and the splices of longitudinal reinforcement in the pier bottom where plastic hinges are formed after yielding. Therefore the deformation capacity is not enough for the ductile flexural behavior of the RC piers. The presented evaluation procedure can be used for the rational decisions as to seismic retrofitting of the existing RC piers.
