  • Janggun mine (longitude $129^{\circ}$ 03'38.91" Latitude $36^{\circ}$ 51'31.59") had been operated as an underground mine for last few decades. As the part of the remediation process, the surface of tailing dump was covered with uncontaminated soil about 20 cm in depth and acacia trees were planted. Heavy metal uptake of acacia from tailing soil has continued for the past 15 years. Heavy metal concentration ranges of tailing soil that contaminated with As (66.43-9325.34 mg/kg), Cd (0.96-1.09 mg/kg), Cu (16.90-57.60 mg/kg), Pb (57.33-945.67 mg/kg), and Zn (154.48-278.61 mg/kg) have higher than those of control soil As (38.98 mg/kg), Cd (0.42 mg/kg), Cu (10.26 mg/kg), Pb (8.21 mg/kg), Zn (46.74 mg/kg). The As, Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn concentrations of leaf of acacia in highly contaminated tailing dump were 165.95, 0.04, 10.68, 3.18, 48.11 mg/kg, respectively. The metal contents of leaf of acacia tree that obtained from uncontaminated control soil are 1.31 of As, 3.90 of Cu, 0.22 of Pb and 11.01 mg/kg of Zn. It was investigated that in the acacia tree, heavy metals such as As, Cu, Pb and Zn tend to be more highly concentrated in bark and leaf, compared with sapwood and heartwood.

  • Stability investigations were conducted for the heap of coal associated wastes occurred from D mine located in Gang-Won Province from the geotechnical and environmental engineering aspect, and a countermeasure was also examined to increase the stability in this area. Quality of water flowed from the heap of coal associated wastes was identified as Am. Slope stability investigations were conducted with both circular failure analyses using SLOPILE program and planar failure analyses in cases of dry, rainy, and ordinary slopes. The results of circular failure analyses indicated that the factor of safety is 0.78 for rainy case. for planar failure analyses, the factor of safety decreases with increase the depth and reaches below 1 about 4m depth for rainy case. A retaining wall system with backfill using the recycled-concrete aggregates as a practical scheme was suggested to satisfy both demands: reducing Am generation, and enhancing slope stability in the deposits of coal associated wastes.

  • This study was conducted to assess the geochemical contamination degree of As, Cd, Cu, Pb, Sb, and Zn in the soil and water samples from an abandoned gold mine. Enrichment Factor (EF), Geoaccumulation Index (Igeo), and Pollution Load Index (PLI) were carried out to assess the geochemical contamination degree of the soil samples. Variations of sulfate and heavy metals concentration in water samples were determined to identify the geochemical distribution with respect to the distance from the mine tailing dam. Geochemical pollution indices indicated significant contaminated with As, Cd, Pb, and Zn in the soil samples that areas close to the mine tailing dam, while, Sb showed similar indices in all soil samples. These results indicated that the As, Cd, Pb, and Zn dispersion has occurred via anthropogenic sources, such as mining activities. In terms of water samples, anomalies in the concentrations of As, Cd, Zn, and SO42- was determined at specific area, in addition, the concentrations of the elements gradually decreased with distance. This result implies the heavy metals distribution in water has carried out by the weathering of sulfide minerals in the mine tailing and soil. The study area has been conducted the remediation of contaminated soil in the past, however, the geochemical dispersion of heavy metals was supposed to be occurred from the potential contamination source. Therefore, continuous monitoring of the soil and water is necessary after the completion of remediation.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the chemical properties of white soil and refined clay sediment, which are produced early in the refining process. The characteristics of the white wares made at the kiln site in Goseong-ri, Chuncheon were also examined. Three groups of materials were examined: white wares excavated from the white wares kiln, raw material from white soil collected from the surface, and a refined clay sediment group. There were also three analysis methods, which were a main components analysis, a trace components analysis, and a mineral analysis. The main components analysis found that the white wares clay was in the RO24.04~4.28 and the RO + R2O 0.30~0.31 mole areas, which were similar to the results for the refined clay sediment. However, the refining process used to produce better quality white wares meant that the large differences in the early white soil raw material appeared in the refined sediment. The mineral phase analysis showed that the crystals detected in the early white soil raw materials and refined clay sediment were almost identical. However, quartz and mullite mineral phases, which can occur above a certain temperature, were detected in the excavated white wares clay. Rare earth elements that were not affected by the pottery making process and the weathering of clay materials were found to have the same origin in all three groups.

  • This study was conducted to remove fluorine (F) (initial concentration of 9.5 mg/L) from leachate of reclaimed mine waste dump site via different methods: (1) co-precipitation using Ca-based materials; (2) adsorption using activated carbon and fly ash; and (3) coagulation and sedimentation using alum. The F removal efficiencies of each case were estimated as 65.6% (Ca co-precipitation), 27.9% (adsorption of activated carbon), 71.5% (adsorption of fly ash), and 96.6% (alum coagulation and sedimentation). In addition, the applicability of the continuous treatment process using alum coagulation was evaluated by lab-scale experiments using simulated mine drainage containing F of lower (6.4 mg/L) and higher (15.7 mg/L) concentrations, and it was confirmed that the treatment of both cases met the domestic standard (below 3 mg/L) for discharged water in clean areas. Furthermore, the results of bench-scale field tests indicated that the water quality standard of discharged water could be satisfied with the proper operation and management of the process.

  • Dewatering mold form get many holes on the surface to drain excessive water from combine concrete. While fiber is adhered to the forms inter surface, that makes it possible to improve concrete workability by draining excess water through the holes. We can expect the outer layer to solidify and to compact and get improvement of concretes durability. Maybe, it is valuable enough that dewatering mold form is put to practical use. On this study, the purpose is to obtain fundamental data for effective dewatering mold and properties of exposed concrete with the form, and ultimately, is to propose practical theory.

  • A gigantic ship is constructed by assembling various types of ship blocks, each block being made by cutting and piecing the steel-plates together. The steel-plate piling process as the initial stage of ship construction sorts and manages the steel-plates according to the ship blocks that the steel-plates are used to make. The steel-plate piling process poses some problems such as process delay due to piling errors, safety vulnerability due to the handling of extra heavy-weight objects, and the uncertainty of work plan due to lack of information management in the pile spaces. We constructed a steel-plate piling process system based on the context-aware computing to resolve such problems. We built simulation system that can simulate the piling process and then established a smart space within the system by using tags, sensors and a real-time location system in order to collect context information. Workers receive an appropriate or intelligent service from the system.

  • The slug test by adding water to well and measuring falling head was conducted to investigate the hydrogeological property of unsaturated or partially saturated mine tailings in the Imgi abandoned mine in Busan. In case that wells were installed with a full screen through two layers with different hydraulic properties, Bouwer and Rice method was useful to estimate the hydraulic conductivity and the depth of mine tailings. In particular, when groundwater dried out in the dry season, the slug test performed by adding water into well to form artificial water table and then conducting falling head test produced the reasonable hydraulic conductivity values. The slug test using falling head test can be an alternative to investigate the hydrogeological property of abandoned mine tailings.

  • To investigate the unsaturated characteristics of the tailings obtained from the waste dump at Imgi mine, matric suction and volumetric water content were measured in both drying and wetting processes using Automated Soil-Water Characteristics Curve Apparatus. Based on the measured result, Soil Water Characteristic Curves (SWCC) were estimated by van Genuchten model. According to the unsaturated soil classification method, the tailings of the waste dump correspond to clayey sand. As a result of Suction Stress Characteristic Curve (SSCC) by Lu and Likos model, SSCC has a shape of S which is similar to SWCC. The hysteresis phenomenon occurred in SSCCs, which means the suction stress of drying path is larger than that of wetting path in the same effective degree of saturation. The effective stress of unsaturated soil is equal to that of saturated soil when matric suction is less than Air Entry Value (AEV). However, the effective stress of unsaturated soil is larger than that of saturated soil when matic suction is more than AEV. Meanwhile, unsaturated hydraulic conductivity by van Genuchten model decreased with increasing matric suction, and the hydraulic conductivity of drying path is larger than that of wetting path.
