Static and Fatigue Characteristics of Urethane Foam Cored Sandwich Structures (우레탄 폼 코아 샌드위치 구조물의 정적 및 피로 특성)

  • The static and fatigue characteristics of polyurethane foam cored sandwich structures are investigated. Three types of the specimens with the glass fabric faces and the polyurethane foam core are used; non-stitched. stitched, and stiffened sandwich specimen. Especially additional structural reinforcements with the twisted polyester and glass fiber for thickness direction are made to stitched sandwich structure panel to minimize the delamination of structure which is stitched the upper and lower faces through the core and the resin is impregnated Into stitched fiber with the characteristics of low viscosity of resin at resin flow temperature and cured together with during the curing process. Bending strength of stitched specimen which is 50 mm $50{\times}50{\;}mm$ pitched is improved by 50 % as com-pared with non-stitched specimen and stiffened specimen is improved 10 times more than non-stitched structure. After fatigue testing of $10^6$cycles by 20% of ultimate load under monotonic load, the bending fatigue strength of non-stitched specimen is decreased by 27% of monotonic bending strength, 39% for stitched structure and 20% for stiffened specimen. To verify the aging effect of polyurethane form core, Ultrasonic C-scanning equipment is used to detect the damage of skin laminate alone after fatigue test. From results of UT C-scan images, there is no defect that can be damaged occurred during fatigue test. It is concluded that the decrease of bending strength for foam cored sandwich specimen is caused by the decrease of stiffness due to the aging of polyurethane foam core during fatigue cycles.

Numerical Study on Inverse Analysis Based on Levenberg-Marquardt Method to Predict Mode-I Adhesive Behavior of Fiber Metal Laminate (섬유금속적층판의 모드 I 접합 거동 예측을 위한 Levenberg-Marquardt 기법 기반의 역해석 기법에 관한 수치적 연구)

  • Fiber metal laminate (FML) is a type of hybrid composites which consist of metallic and fiber-reinforced plastic sheets. As the FML has a drawback of the delamination that is a failure of the interfacial adhesive layer, the nominal stresses and the energy release rates should be determined to identify the delamination behavior. However, it is difficult to derive the nominal stresses and the energy release rates since the operating temperature of the equipment is restricted. For this reason, the objective of this paper is to predict the mode-I nominal stress and the mode-I energy release rate of the adhesive layer using the inverse analysis based on the Levenberg-Marquardt method. First, the mode-I nominal stress was assumed as the tensile strength of the adhesive layer, and the mode-I energy release rate was obtained from the double cantilever beam test. Next, the finite element method was applied to predict the mode-I delamination behavior. Finally, the mode-I nominal stress and the mode-I energy release rate were predicted by the inverse analysis. In addition, the convergence of the parameters was validated by trying to input two cases of the initial parameters. Consequently, it is noted that the inverse analysis can predict the mode-I delamination behavior, and the two input parameters were converged to similar values.

The Aging Effect of $Avimid^(R)$ K3B/1M7 Laminates in $80^{\circ}C$ Water ($Avimid^(R)$ K3B/IM7 복합재료의 $80^{\circ}C$ 물에서의 노화현상)

  • The Hygrothermal aging of the laminates of $Avimid^(R)$ K3B/IM7 in $80^{\circ}C$ water was studied as a function of immersion time prior to forming microcracks. The factors causing the $80^{\circ}C$ water to degradation of the laminates could be the degradation of the matrix toughness, the change in residual stresses or the interfacial damage between the fiber and the matrix. The times to saturation in $80^{\circ}C$ water for the laminates and for the neat resin were 100 hours and 500 hours. After 500 hours aging of the neat resin, the glass transition temperature was changed less than 1% by DSC test, and the weight gain was 1.55% increase with the diffusion coefficient $7\times10^{-6}m/s^2$ and the fracture toughness was decreased about 41%. After 100 hours fully saturated aging of the ${[+45/0/-45/90]}_s$ K3B/IM7 laminates in $80^{\circ}C$ water, the weight gain was 0.41% increase with the diffusion coefficient $1\times10^{-6}m/s^2$. In 100 hours, the loss of the fracture toughness of the laminates was 43.8% of the original toughness by the microcracking fracture toughness criterion. Therefore, the main factor to degrade the microcracking toughness of the laminates could be the degradation of the matrix fracture toughness.

Development of Method for Manufacturing Freeform EPS Forms Using Sloped-LOM Type 3D Printer (Sloped-LOM 방식 3D 프린터를 이용한 비정형 EPS 거푸집 제작 공법 개발)

  • Recently, free-formed construction technology is becoming a new measure of representing technological superiority and sociocultural ingenuity. However, the CNC processing technology utilizing the existing wood and iron form has limitations in terms of the manufacturing time and material cost. Therefore, in this study, the method and process of manufacturing free-formed EPS form using S-LOM-based 3D printing technology were suggested. Furthermore, through the mock-up test, a comparative analysis of the manufacturing time and precision with CNC milling technology was conducted. The results show that S-LOM-based 3D printing technology has reduced manufacturing time about 57.4% compared to CNC milling technology during the free-formed EPS form manufacturing process. In addition, compared to the design drawings, the maximum error value was 20.5mm, proving the applicability of S-LOM-based 3D printing technology. The results of this study are expected to contribute to the improvement of S-LOM method and the activation of S-LOM method by verifying the applicability of S-LOM-based 3D printing technology.

Strength Properties of GFRP Reinforced Glulam Beams Bonded with Polyvinyl Acetate-Based Emulsion Adhesive (초산비닐수지계 접착제를 사용한 유리섬유강화플라스틱 복합집성재의 강도 성능 평가)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the bending strength properties of the unreinforced glulam beams and the GFRP laminated glulam beams according to the volume ratio of GFRP. The 7-layer glulam beams ($10cm(b){\times}14cm(h){\times}180cm(l)$) were manufactured, using Larch (Larix kaempferi Carr.) laminae ($2cm(h){\times}10cm(b){\times}360cm(l)$), which were dried to the moisture content of 8% and specific gravity of 0.54. GPRP of 0.1 and 0.3 cm was reinforced between the outmost layer of bottom and next layer. When the glulam beams were reinforced with GFRP at the volume ratio of 0.7% and 2.1%, respectively, the bending strength was increased by 12% and 28%, respectively, in the reinforced beams than in control glulam beams. Also, the GFRP reinforced layer of the glulam beams with GFRP laminations blocked the progression of rupture, and the unbroken part held about 90% of the bending strength. In the results of glue joints test, the block shear strength is higher than $7.1N/mm^2$, the standard of KS F3021, and in the result of delamination, the adhesive strength is good as the water soaking and boiling delamination was less than 5%.

Manufacture and Evaluation of Small Size PEMFC Stack Using Carbon Composite Bipolar Plate (탄소복합소재 분리판을 이용한 소형 고분자전해질 연료전지 스택 제작 및 성능분석)

  • Small size polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) stacks were prepared using carbon composite and graphite bipolar plates and their performances were evaluated on reactant gas and operating time. In comparison to single cell and stack, it was identified that home-made bipolar plate was well-designed to maximize stack performance as high as that of single cell. During long-term operation, the performances of stacks using two different kinds of bipolar plates were compared. The decrease of performance in both stacks was accelerated with increasing load current. It was observed from stack test that the stack performance using carbon composite bipolar plate was very similar to that using graphite bipolar plate.

Strength Characteristics of 3D Printing Concrete for Exterior materials using Accelerating agent (급결제를 사용한 외장재용 3D 프린팅 콘크리트의 강도 특성)

  • In this study, the output results of 3D printed exterior materials for application to buildings of various shapes are output tests using test specimens, in which 3D printing concrete is cast in a mold and accelerating agents are used to ensure stackability. The unit weight and strength characteristics of the body were analyzed. Compared to the unit weight of concrete placed in the mold, the unit weight of 3D printing concrete using accelerating agents tends to decrease by approximately 3.5% to 5.0%, and the compressive strength is the compressive strength of the concrete placed in the mold. In comparison, the compression strength of the output by 3D printing tended to decrease by approximately 36% to 46%. In the flexural strength, the compressive strength of the output through 3D printing decreased by approximately 36% to 46% compared to the compressive strength of concrete placed in the mold. The impact on the strength characteristics of 3D printed concrete using accelerating agents tended to decrease by approximately 2.0 to 5.8%. Therefore, 3D printing output accelerating agents can be used.

Electrical response of tungsten diselenide to the adsorption of trinitrotoluene molecules (폭발물 감지 시스템 개발을 위한 TNT 분자 흡착에 대한 WSe2 소자의 전기적 반응 특성 평가)

  • As demanding the detection of explosive molecules, it is required to develop rapidly and precisely responsive sensors with ultra-high sensitivity. Since two-dimensional semiconductors have an atomically thin body nature where mobile carriers accumulate, the abrupt modulation carrier in the thin body channel can be expected. To investigate the effectiveness of WSe2 semiconductor materials as a detection material for TNT (Trinitrotoluene) explosives, WSe2 was synthesized using thermal chemical vapor deposition, and afterward, WSe2 FETs (Field Effect Transistors) were fabricated using standard photo-lithograph processes. Raman Spectrum and FT-IR (Fourier-transform infrared) spectroscopy reveal that the adsorption of TNT molecules induces the structural transition of WSe2 crystalline. The electrical properties before and after adsorption of TNT molecules on the WSe2 surface were compared; as -50 V was applied as the back gate bias, 0.02 μA was recorded in the bare state, and the drain current increased to 0.41 μA with a dropping 0.6% (w/v) TNT while maintaining the p-type behavior. Afterward, the electrical characteristics were additionally evaluated by comparing the carrier mobility, hysteresis, and on/off ratio. Consequently, the present report provides the milestone for developing ultra-sensitive sensors with rapid response and high precision.

Static Strength of Composite Single-lap Joints Using I-fiber Stitching Process with different Stitching Pattern and Angle (I-fiber Stitching 공법을 적용한 복합재료 Single-lap Joint의 Stitching 패턴과 각도에 따른 정적 강도 연구)

  • Laminated composite materials have excellent in-plane properties, but are vulnerable in thickness directions, making it easy to delamination when bending and torsion loads are applied. Thickness directional reinforcement methods of composite materials that delay delamination include Z-pinning, Stitching, Tufting, etc., and typically Z-pinning and Stitching method are commonly used. The Z-pinning is reinforcement method by inserting metal or carbon pin in the thickness direction of prepreg, and the conventional stitching process is a method of reinforcing the mechanical properties in the thickness direction by intersecting the upper and lower fibers on the preform. In this paper, I-fiber stitching method, which complement and improve weakness of Z-pinning and Stitching method, was proposed, and the static strength of composite single-lap joints using I-fiber stitching process were evaluated. The single-lap joints were fabricated by a co-curing method using an autoclave vacuum bag process. The thickness of the composite adherend was fixed, and 5 types of specimens were manufactured with varying the stitching pattern (5×5, 7×7) and angle (0°, 45°). From the test, the failure load of the specimen reinforced by the I-fiber stitching process was increased by up to 143% compared to that of specimen without reinforcement.

Design and Manufacturing Technology of Heat Exchanger in Air Compressor for Railroad Vehicle by 3D Printing Process (3D 프린팅 적용 철도차량용 공기압축기의 열교환기 설계 및 제작 기술 연구)

  • 3D printing technology is a manufacturing process for products, in which polymer and metal materials are laminated to form structures. It is advantageous for manufacturing parts requiring a high degree of design freedom and functionality. In addition, it would be a suitable technology for the production of parts for railway vehicles in the future, due to the need to produce parts in small quantities. In order to fully exploit the advantages of 3D printing technology, it is necessary to consider the process characteristics during the design of the product. In this study, the redesign and manufacturing technology of the product considering the performance and process conditions were studied for the heat exchanger in the air compressor of railway vehicles, as a trial application of the 3D printing technique. First of all, the design concept to improve the performance of the heat exchanger was defined, and the design range was specified to satisfy the performance of the present heat exchanger analyzed experimentally. Then, the detailed design was revised considering the characteristics of the metal 3D printing process, such as the manufacturing restrictions and production time. Based on the final design, the product was fabricated by the 3D printing process using aluminum material, and it was confirmed that the dimensional accuracy was satisfied. The weight of the final product was reduced by 41% compared with the existing products. The results of this study will make it possible to develop an efficient product design process for 3D printing technology.
