PIC (Piecewise Integrated Composite) is a new concept for designing a composite structure with mosaically assigning various types of stacking sequences in order to improve mechanical properties of laminated composites. Also, machine learning is a sub-category of artificial intelligence, that refers to the process by which computers develop the ability to continuously learn from and make predictions based on data, then make adjustments without further programming. In the present study, the tapered box beam type PIC robot arm for carrying and transferring wide and thin LCD display was designed based on the machine learning in order to increase structural stiffness. Essential training data were collected from the reference elements, which were intentionally designated elements among finite element models, during preliminary FE analysis. Additionally, triaxiality values for each finite element were obtained for judging the dominant external loading type, such as tensile, compressive or shear. Training and evaluating machine learning model were conducted using the training data and loading types of elements were predicted in case the level accuracy was fulfilled. Three types of stacking sequences, which were to be known as robust toward specific loading types, were mosaically assigned to the PIC robot arm. Henceforth, the bending type FE analysis was carried out and its result claimed that the PIC robot arm showed increased stiffness compared to conventional uni-stacking sequence type composite robot arm.

In this paper, a micro-mechanical failure prediction program is developed based on SIFT (Strain Invariant Failure Theory) by using the multi-scale modeling method for fiber-reinforced composite materials. And the failure analysis are performed for open-hole composite laminate specimen in order to verify the developed program. First of all, the critical strain invariants are obtained through the tensile tests for three types of specimens. Also, the matrices of strain amplification factors are determined through the finite element analysis for micro-mechanical model, RVE (Representative Volume Element). Finally, the microscopic failure analysis is performed for the open-hole composite laminate specimen model by applying a failure load obtained from tensile test, and the predicted failure indices are evaluated for verification of the developed program.

This study carried out finite element vibration analysis of composite plate structures for construction using multi-scale approaches, which is based on the higher-order theory. The finite element (FE) models for composite structures using multi-scale approaches described in this paper is attractive not only because it shows excellent accuracy in analysis but also it shows the effect of the material combination. The FE model is used for studying free vibrations of laminated composite plates for various fiber-volume fractions. In particular, new results reported in this paper are focused on the significant effects of the fiber-volume fraction for various parameters, such as fiber angles, layup sequences, and length-thickness ratios. It may be concluded from this study that the combination effect of fiber and matrix, largely governing the dynamic characteristics of composite structures, should not be neglected and thus the optimal combination could be used to design such civil structures for better dynamic performance.

The composite shell element is developed for the solution of undamped forced vibration problem of composite curved panels. The finite element used in the current study is an 4-node enhanced assumed shell element with six degrees of freedom per node. The composite shell element is free of both shear and membrane locking phenomenon by using the enhanced assumed strain(EAS) method. A modification to the first-order shear deformation shell theory is proposed, which results in parabolic thorough-thickness distribution of the transverse shear strains and stresses. It eliminates the need for shear correction factors in the first order theory. Newmark's direct integration technique is used for carrying out the integration of the equation motion, to obtain the repones history. Parametric studies of curved composite panels are carried out for forced vibration analysis by geometrical shapes and by laminated composite; such as fiber orientation, stacking sequence.
This study presents a governing equations of bending behavior of sandwich plates with thick metal, polymer composite facings. Based on zig-zag models for through thickness deformations, the transverse shear deformation of composite facings is included. All edges of plate are assumed to be simply supported. Results of the bending analysis under lateral loads are presented for the influence of various lay up sequences of antisymmetric angle-ply laminated facings. The accuracy of the approach is ascertained by comparing solutions from the sandwich plates theory with composite facings to the laminated plates theory. Since the present analysis considers the bending stiffness of the core and also the transverse shear deformations of the laminated facings, the proposed method showed higher than that calculated according to the general laminated plates theory. The information presented might be useful to design sandwich plates structure with metal, polymer matrix composite facings.

$2.5^{\circ}\;and\;5^{\circ}$ tilted (100) Si wafer were oxidized in dry oxygen, and the differences in thermal oxidation behavior and oxidation induced stacking faults (OSF) between specimens were investigated. Ellipsometer measurements of the oxide thickness produced by oxidation in dry oxygen from 900 to $1200^{\circ}C$ showed that the oxidation rates of the tilted (100) Si were more rapid than those of the (100) Si and the differences between them decreased as the oxidation temperature increased. The activation energies based on the parabolic rate constant, B for (100) Si, $2.5^{\circ}$ off (100) Si and $5^{\circ}$ off (100) Si were 27.3, 25.9, 27.6 kcal/mol and those on the linear rate constant, B/A were 58.6, 56.6, 57.6 kcal/mol, respectively. Also, considerable decrease in the density of oxidation induced stacking faults for the $5^{\circ}$ off (100) Si was observed through optical microscopy after preferentially etching off the oxide layer, and the angle of stacking faults were changed with tilted angles.
Composite structures have been designed by stacking the laminae with different stacking angles to meet the required mechanical performance. Although the induced stresses on the composite structures under the external loads usually differ depending on the location, we determined the stacking sequence based on the maximum stress, which leads to low efficiency and generally is not the optimum design. Recently, piecewise integrated composites (PICs) were suggested for solving this inefficiency. PICs assume the perfect bonding between adjacent pieces, but this is ideal and hard to accomplish. Therefore, the overlap at the boundary is essential to prevent separation from each other. In this study, we investigated the effect of the overlap design on the impact failure mode of PIC plates. We fabricated the sample composite plates with different overlap designs using the fast curing carbon prepreg and conducted the impact tests according to ASTM D 7136. We found that PICs had different failure modes according to the overlap design, which lead the changes of absorbed impact energies as well as impact load curves.

The co-cured Joining method, which is regarded as an adhesively bonded Joining method, is an efficient joining technique because both curing and bonding processes for the composite structures can be achieved simultaneously. It requires neither surface treatment onto the composite adherend nor an additional adhesive joining process because the excess resin, which is extracted from composite materials during consolidation, accomplishes the co-cured Joining process. Since the adhesive of the co-cured joint is the same material as the resin of the composite adherend, the analysis and design of the co-cured joint for composite structures are simpler than those of an adhesively bonded joint, which uses an additional adhesive. In this paper, effects of the manufacturing parameters, namely surface roughness, stacking sequence of the composite adherend, and manufacturing pressure in the autoclave during curing process, on the tensile load bearing capacity of the co-cured single lap joint will be experimentally investigated.
The satellite system experiences severe mechanical loads during the launch period. Therefore, the positive margin of safety of the satellite system must be demonstrated for every possible mechanical loading conditions during the launch period. This paper presents modal and stress analysis results due to quasi-static loads for the satellite antenna system. The failure tendency fur the sandwich construction of the satellite antenna system has been studied with various lamination angles of unidirectional prepreg.
