  • /sup 226/Ra and /sup 228/Ra analysis were carried out at the representative station of Masan Bay from May to August, 1999. The high activities of /sup 226/Ra and /sup 228/Ra in the surface water were appeared in rainy season (August, 1). However, there is no significant variation in concentrations in the other season. A high negative linear correlation between /sup 226/Ra activities and salinity in the surface water suggests that /sup 226/Ra activity in the surface water was controlled by simple mixing between the two end-members low salinity high /sup 226/Ra activity water of inner Bay and a high salinity low /sup 226/Ra activity water of the continental shelf water out of Bay. /sup 226/Ra activities below the surface mixed layer were higher than those of expected level from the /sup 226/Ra versus salinity. And also /sup 228/Ra//sup 226/Ra ratios in the bottom water were lower compared to those in surface water due to the presence of potential source of /sup 226/Ra below the surface mixed layer. However, it is known that /sup 228/Ra compared to /sup 226/Ra is enriched in bottom sediments and pure water. Therefore, the most probable sources for low /sup 228/Ra//sup 226/Ra activity ration is submarine ground water discharge. Further studies are required to quantify the various sources of /sup 226/Ra and /sup 228/Ra and their relative contributions.

  • The distributions of dissolved inorganic nutrient contents were investigated along transection line J (30° N) in the eastern East China Sea in December 1993 and August 1994, respectively. The concentrations of nitrate and silicate in the Kuroshio Surface Water (KSW) with high temperature and high salinity were low below 2μM and 5μM, respectively. However, these were increased sharply with depth and ranged from 20 to 40, 45 to 100μM, respectively, in the Kuroshio Intermediate Water (KIW). The relationship between temperature and nutrients suggests that Kuroshio Intermediate Water with rich nutrients were intruded into the bottom water of the outer continental shelf in the East China Sea. The bottom water of the outer continental shelf was made of two end-members mixing; nutrient depleted warm water and nutrient enriched cold water. Based on temperature, salinity and silicate concentration, the nutrients in the bottom water of the outer continental shelf suggusted to be supplied through the vertical mixing of Kuroshio subsurface water in the depth range of 100~400m. Upwelled nutrient rich water appears to be a important source of nutrients for primary production in the continental shelf area of the East China Sea.

  • The circulation due to tidal current and river discharge, and the associated suspended suspended sediment transport in macrotidal Keum Estuary, were studied through a series of field measurements of tidal currents and suspended sediment concentration at three anchored stations from 1990 through 1992. From the measurements, the following results were obtained. At the seaward entrance of the estuary, the veritical profiles of the ebb and flood currents were almost symmetric. At the southern channel the flood current was dominant in the whole water column, but in the northern channel the ebb current was dominant in the surface and bottom layers and the flood current was dominant in the intermediate layer. The maximum velocity of the tidal current in the southern channel was 174 cm/s during flood tide in the intermediate layer. The maximum velocity, 148 cm/s in the northern channel also appeared during flood tide in the intermediate layer. However, in the surface and bottom layers, the maximum velocities were 110.6 cm/s during ebb tide and 92.1 cm/s during flood tide, respectively. The type of the Keum Estuary can be categorized to 'Type 3' of Hansen and Rattray's scheme. The water column of the estuary during the flood tide becomes stratified, and after high water the ebb current reduces the density difference and the water column becomes turbulent. The lower layer of the water column is generally turbulent. The largest sediment flux 20.61 ton/s was found in the southern channel during flood current in the lowest river discharge (May, 1991), while the smallest flux, 0.65 ton/s in the northern channel in the lowest tidal range (July, 1992). The stronger bottom shear velocity for the present study area seems to erode the bottom sediments during the flood tide, and the relatively long duration of the ebb tide to transport the suspended sediments. Under normal river discharge conditions, the suspended sediments are transported mainly through the southern channel. However, under high river discharge condition the suspended sediment transport is dominant through the northern channel.

  • The trophic state of the coastal waters of the southern part of Korea was assessed using biogeochemical data obtained from the National Marine Environmental Monitoring Program conducted by the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute for six years. The trophic state of different areas, analyzed by non-metric multi-dimensional scaling (MDS) analysis, could divide the areas into three groups. Masan Bay, with suboxic water masses and/or the highest concentrations of dissolved inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus occurred, was assessed as being in a hypertrophic state. Ulsan Bay, Onsan Bay, Busan and Jinhae Bay, located near strong point sources, were in a eutrophic state. Other areas, including Tongyong, Yosu, Mokpo and Jeju island, were evaluated as being in a mesotrophic state. During 1997 to 2002, the average values of excess nitrogen, which is the difference between the measured dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and the corrected DIN using the Redfield ratio, were positive at Ulsan, Onsan, and Busan, where there were inflows from polluted rivers. In contrast, those were negative values in Haengam Bay, Gwangyang Bay and nearby Yosu. This suggests that the limiting element for phytoplankton growth differed among sites. The time series data of excess nitrogen showed gradual decrease over time in the hypertrophic waters, but the opposite trend in the mesotrophic waters. This indicated that the ratio of nitrogen to phosphate varied according to the trophic state of the coastal waters. The enrichment of organic matter in sediment in eutrophic waters would disturb the normal pattern of biogeochemical cycling of nitrogen and phosphate. In order to assess the condition of the coastal environment, the benthic boundary layer should be considered.

  • Coastal boundary current flows along the eastern boundary of the Yellow Sea and its speed was about 0.l m/s during the summer 2007. In order to find major factors that affect the coastal boundary current in the eastern Yellow Sea, three-dimensional numerical model experiments were performed. The model simulation results were validated against hydrographic and current meter data in the eastern Yellow Sea. The eastern boundary current flows along the bottom front over the upper part of slopping bottom. Strength and position of the current were affected by tides, winds, local river discharge, and solar radiation. Tidal stirring and surface wind mixing were major factors that control the summertime boundary currents along the bottom front. Tidal stirring was essential to generate the bottom temperature front and boundary current. Wind mixing made the boundary current wider and augmented its north-ward transport. Buoyancy forcing from the freshwater input and solar radiation also affected the boundary current but their contributions were minor. Strong (weak) tidal mixing during spring (neap) tides made the northward transport larger (smaller) in the numerical simulations. But offshore position of the eastern boundary current's major axis was not apparently changed by the spring-neap cycle in the mid-eastern Yellow Sea due to strong summer stratification. The mean position of coastal boundary current varied due to variations in the level of wind mixing.

  • Hydroacoustic surveys were conducted in the East China Sea, in the summers of 1990-1991 to investigate the distribution and migration behavior of fish, such as the diel changes in the distributions of fish, the thermoselection behavior of fish, and the fish reactions to a surveying vessel. The hydroacoustic observations were taken with a scientific echo sounder operating at 50kHz and a microcomputer-based echo processor. Fish samples were collected by bottom trawling and temperature was measured with a DBT system. The patterns of fish distributions were compared with the vertical profiles of water temperature. The results obtained can be summarized as follows: 1. The time series of hydroacoustic observations on the downward migration at dawn in the central region of East China Sea showed that the migration rate was 0.24 m/min. In this region, most of the fish collected by bottom trawling during the surveys were squid (Photologio edulis f. budo) and horse mackeral (Trachurus japonicus). 2. The hydroacoustic observations, which together associated with temperature data, indicated that squid and horse mackeral concentrated nocturally in a narrow vertical band of thermocline, particularly in summer when the survey region was strongly stratified. This result suggest that the nocturnal vertical distribution of these species evidently is controlled by temperature. 3. When the survey vessel, that is running at a speed of 11 knots, has suddenly stopped, the fish which concentrated beneath the transducer showed a strong avoidance reaction in the form of rapid downward migration. After a few minutes, the descending reaction disappeared and the fish slowly began the upward migration toward their original swimming positions. Trawl data suggest that the fish, which showed the avoidance reaction, was Liparis tessellatus.

  • Seismic design code has been performed since 1988 in Korea, so it has not been applied to low-rise reinforced concrete buildings which had been built before 1988. Those building have been designed only for gravity loads based on non-seismic code, Therefore, even minor earthquake occurred, those buildings might have serious damages. In this paper, to investigate the behavior of low-rise reinforced concrete moment resisting frame which had been built in according to the building code of Korea that had been published before 1988, two type of 1/2 scaled exterior beam-column subassemblies which have non-seismic detailing based on the building code of Korea were constructed and tested with reversed cycling loading under the displacement control method. The special features of joint with non-seismic detailing is that there is no transverse reinforcement in the joint. In tests, cracks pattern, strength degradation, loss of stiffness, energy dissipation and the slippage of beam and column bars were investigated. Cracks did not occurred in the joint even seismic loading of 0.12g which is considered as peak ground acceleration in Korea was applied. And increasing seismic loading above 0.12g shear crack happened in the joint which have not transverse beam.

  • When a heavy rain brings flooding, a high turbid water is flowing into a reservoir. In this study, the effectiveness of the intake structures for the selective withdrawal from the various levels of a stratified reservoir was evaluated by the field experiments and the numerical modeling of the three-dimensional approaching flows. The temperature, the turbidity, and the velocity fields for the selective withdrawal were measured using both YSI6600EDS and YSI6600ADV, respectively. A threedimensional model, FLOW-3D, was used to predict the performance of the intake tower in Imha reservoir. The comparisons of the vertical velocity field showed a good agreement with the field measurements. The efficiency of the turbid-water elimination of the selective withdrawal method from low levels was higher up to 46% than that of the surface withdrawal. From the analysis of the numerical simulation, the efficiency of turbidity elimination increased by 10% for the selective withdrawal from middle levels, and by 30% from low levels. These results showed that the selective withdrawals from middle and low levels are more effective than the surface-water intake. The similar results were obtained by the one-dimensional model, SELECT, which is much more computationally time-efficient.

  • The cell numbers of heterotrophic bacteria inhabiting the surface and bottom sea water harvested from the 5 stations in the marine ranching ground of Tongyeong coastal waters in $2003{\sim}2007$ were examined, and species composition of the heterotrophic bacterial population and dominant species were analyzed as well. Sea water samples collected in summer season contained much higher number of heterotrophic bacteria than those harvested in winter, spring and autumn seasons due to the higher sea water temperature. However the cell number of heterotrophic bacteria did not show a significant dependence on the location of the sampling stations. The cell number of heterotrophic bacteria in the surface sea water harvested in October 2003 and in September 2004 was not discernibly different from that in the bottom sea water and sometimes the former was even fewer than the latter because of the typhoon and localized torrential downpour. The number of heterotrophic bacteria decreased every year. The main bacterial species were Pseudomonas fluorescens TY1, Pseudomonas stutzeri TY2, Acinetobacter lwoffii TY3, Sphingomonas paucimobilis TY4, Burkholderia mallei TY5, Pasteurella haemolytica TY6, Pasteurella multocida TY7, Comamonas acidovorans TY8, Actinobacillus ureae TY9 and Chryseobacterium indologenes TY10. P. fluorescens TY1 and A. lwoffii TY3 were found to be the dominant species.

  • The vertical distribution and activity patterns of fishes during the evening and morning transitions were investigated acoustically and by pelagic trawling on October 2-10, 1997 in the Korean Eastern Sea. The acoustic data were collected from four stations with a scientific echo sounder operating at a frequency of 38 kHz, and the echogram was used to analyze the diel vertical migration of fish. Biological sampling was accomplished by pelagic trawling to identify fish species recorded on the echograms, and the species and length compositions were investigated. Vertical profiles of water temperature, salinity at the trawl station were taken with a CTD system and were related to the diel movement and the depth distribution of fish. During the day, one group of fish mainly distributed above the depth layer of 50 m, the other group was at deeper water, approximately 250 m, but began to migrate toward the surface before sunset with a time difference. During the night, they were dispersed between the surface and the depth of 125 m. Just prior to sunrise, the scattering layer was divided with 2 groups and began to migrate downwards, respectively. Several trials of pelagic trawling for scattering layers suggest that the most dominant scatterer in the survey area of this study was Japanese flying squid, Todarodes pacificus..
