Rhizobacteria play important roles in plant growth and health enhancement and render them resistant to not only biotic stresses but also abiotic stresses, such as low/high temperature, drought, and salinity. This study aimed to select plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) with the capability to mitigate biotic and abiotic stress effects on tomato plants. We isolated a novel PGPR strain, Variovorax sp. PMC12 from tomato rhizosphere. An in vitro assay indicated that strain PMC12 produced ammonia, indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), siderophore, and 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) deaminase, which are well-known traits of PGPR. The aboveground fresh weight was significantly higher in tomato plants treated with strain PMC12 than in non-treated tomato plants under various abiotic stress conditions including salinity, low temperature, and drought. Furthermore, strain PMC12 also enhanced the resistance to bacterial wilt disease caused by Ralstonia solanacearum. Taken together, these results indicated that strain PMC12 is a promising biocontrol agent and a biostimulant to reduce the susceptibility of plants to both abiotic and biotic stresses.
Alteration of temperature is one of cancer therapies. In general, severe hyperthermia(around $43^{\circ}C$) and hypothermia(around $18^{\circ}C$) trigger apoptosis through mitochondria, though the specific mechanism is still unknown. CC-t6 and GB-d1 cell lines, which were originally derived from human cholangiocarcinoma and gall bladder cancer, were established from a metastatic lymph node. To investigate the mechanism of metastatic cancer cell response to thermal stresses, hyperthermia($37^{\circ}C{\rightarrow}43^{\circ}C$) and hypothermia($37^{\circ}C{\rightarrow}17.4^{\circ}C$) were designed. Thermal stresses did not induce apoptosis but necrotic cell death. Any alterations of caspase-3, -9, cytochrome c, Bax, and Bcl-2 were not found in both hyperthermia and hypothermia exposed fells using western blot analysis. In the transmission electron microscopy, typical necrotic, but not apoptotic, changes were observed. These results suggest that temperature changes induce cell death through necrotic pathway in metastatic cancer in vitro, and it can be one of effective anticancer methods.

To investigation protein expression pattern in rice leaves exposed to cold stress, the soluble proteins extracted from leaf tissue were fractionated with $15\%$ PEG and separated by two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (2-DE). Differentially expressed proteins were identified by peptide mass fingerprinting using matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). Eight proteins up-regulated and 10 down-regulated were found in $15\%$ PEG supernatant fraction. In addition, 13 proteins up-regulated and 14 down-regulated were found in $15\%$ PEG pellet fraction. It was identified the differentially expressed proteins in $15\%$ PEG supernatant fraction as pimerase/dehydratase fructokinase, ribose-5-phosphate isomerase (Rpi), chaperonin 21 precursor, probable photosystem II oxygen-envolving complex (PS II OEC) protein 2 precursor and thioredoxin h-type (Trx-h) and those in $15\%$ PEG pellet fraction as OSINBb0059K02.15, hypothetical protein, putative mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase (MAPKK), beta 7 subunit of 205 proteasome, ribulose-1, 5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) small subunit. These proteins are involved in metabolism, energy, protein synthesis, disease/defense and signal transduction-related proteins.
In the present study was to examine the influence of cold stress conditions on memory function in relation with 5-hydroxytryptamine(serotonin, 5-HT), trptophanhydroxylase(TPH) expression and cell proliferation in the hippocampus. For this study, male Sprague-Dawley rats weighing $250{\pm}10g$ (7 weeks in age) were used. The rats were randomly divided into three groups(n = 10 in each group): the $22^{\circ}C$-control group, the $4^{\circ}C$-3 days group, the $4^{\circ}C$-5 weeks group. The environmental temperature at $22^{\circ}C$ set as the normal conditions, $4^{\circ}C$ was as the cold stress conditions. The present results showed that cold stress conditions shorten latency, representing cold stress disturbed memory function. 5-HT and TPH expressions in the dorsal raphe were increased cold stress. Neurogenesis in the dentate gyrus was increased under cold conditions. The present study revealed that cold stress exerted deteriorative memory function. However, through increasing of 5-HT, TPH and BrdU expression under cold stress conditions did not show memory enhancing effect.

Suppression subtractive hybridization (SSH) was used to isolate wound-induced cDNAs from wounded soybean. One of low-temperature-inducible cDNA, slti182 showed high homology with genes encoding 1-asparaginase. The full length cDNA of slti182, deginated GmASP1, is 1258 bp long and contains an open reading frame consisted of 326 amino acids. CmASP1 protein showed the highest identity (84%) with putative asparaginase from A. thaliana (AB012247), but it showed only 55% identity with another isoform of A. tathaliana (Z34884). The expression of GmASP1 during low temperature stress started to increase 3 hours after treatment, reached the maximum at 6 hour, and then decreased to the initial level at 48 hours. The amount of GmASP1 transcripts increased again when low-temperature-treated plants were transferred to room temperature, The present study suggests that GmASP1 may function to accelerate the protein synthesis which is important in the early response to low temperature.
Chlorophyll fluorescence and antioxidative enzyme activity were investigated from leaves of Crinum asiaticum var. japonicum under the natural condition in winter, in order to monitor plant response and physiological states such as vitality, productivity and so on. In the O-J-I-P transients, the fluorescence intensity of J, I, P-step decreased remarkably depending on temperature drop in winter. The photochemical efficiencies of PSII, Fv/Fm, were significantly low in late winter with decrease of Fm. These results indicate that Crinum plants were affected by seasonal drop of temperature. The catalase activity significantly decreased depending on temperature drop in winter. However, the activity of superoxide dismutase ascorbate peroxidase and peroxidase slightly increased in winter while some isoenzymes appeared in winter. These results, with the remarkable decrease of Ev/Fm in winter, represent that Crinum plants were exposed to oxidative stress and subsequently damaged leading to cell death.
Comparative water relations of Quercus acuta and Castanopsis cuspidata var, sieboldii were analyzed to assess their resistance to drought and low temperature stresses from early November to early December, As air temperature decreased both species showed an increased content of osmotically active solute concentration per unit of dry weight (NS/DW), leading to lower osmotic potential of both species at both full turgid state $(OP_{sat})$ and turgor loss point $(OP_{tlp})$ in December than November. No major difference in the ability to adjust osmotically was noticed between the two. This finding suggests that both species must respond adaptively under water and low temperature stresses to maintain turgor pressure in winter season. In addition to osmotic adjustment, a low bulk modulus of elasticity $(E_{max})$ shown in Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieboldii must also play an important role in turgor maintenance during winter season being apt to happen water and low temperature stresses in plants.
Responses of antioxidant enzymes on chilling and drought stress in tomato seedlings were investigated. Growing patterns of tomato based on fresh weight of tomato seedlings were severely affected by chilling and drought stress. Fresh weight of tomato seedlings were reduced by 69.5% in chilling stress and 50.6% in drought stress compared to those in the unstressed control seedlings after 12 days of stress. The specific and gel activity of SOD and POD in the leaves, shoots, and roots of tomato seedlings were significantly increased by chilling and drought stress. Activation of SOD and POD activity by chilling stress were higher in the roots than those of drought stress. However, activation of SOD and POD activity by drought stress were higher in the leaves and shoots than those of chilling stress. The specific and gel activity of GR in the leaves, shoots, and roots of tomato seedlings were also significantly increased by chilling and drought stress. When the seedlings were treated with chilling or drought stress, one GR isozyme band (GR-3) was newly expressed in the leaves of tomato seedlings. The specific and gel activity of PPO was significantly increased in the roots and shoots of tomato seedlings by chilling and drought stress, respectively. However, the specific and gel activity of PPO in the leaves is no difference between stressed and controlled tomato seedlings.
As an abiotic stress, chilling stress is one of the major factors limiting plant growth and increasing susceptibility to pathogens. Therefore, enhancing stress tolerance in plants is an important strategy for their survival under unfavorable environmental conditions. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of the exogenous application of salicylic acid (SA) or nitric oxide (NO) on chilling tolerance in pepper seedlings. Pepper (Capsicum annuum L. 'kidaemanbal') seedlings were grown under normal growing conditions ($20/25^{\circ}C$, 15 hours photoperiod, $145{\pm}5{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$, fluorescence lamps) for 23 days after transplanting. The solution (3 mL) of 1 mM SA and 0.3 mM NO with surfactant triton 0.1% were sprayed two times a week, respectively. Right after the completion of chemical application, seedlings were subjected to chilling condition at $4^{\circ}C$ for 6 hours under dark condition and then the seedlings were recovered at the normal growing conditions for 2 days. In order to assess plant tolerance against chilling stress, growth characteristics, chlorophyll fluorescence (Fv/Fm), and membrane permeability were determined after chilling stress imposition. Total phenolic concentration and antioxidant capacity were measured during the whole experimental period. Disease incidence for pepper bacterial spot and wilt was also analyzed. Pepper seedlings treated with SA or NO were maintained similar dry mass ratio, while the value in control increased caused by chilling stress suggesting relatively more water loss in control plants. Electrolyte leakage of pepper seedlings treated with SA or NO was lower than that of control 2 days after chilling treatment. Fv/Fm rapidly decreased after chilling stress in control while the value of SA or NO was maintained about 0.8. SA increased higher total phenolic concentration and antioxidant capacity than NO and control during chemical treatment. In addition, increase in total phenolic concentration was observed after chilling stress in control and NO treatment. SA had an effect on the reduction of bacterial wilt in pepper seedlings. The results from this study revealed that pre-treatment with SA or NO using foliar spray was effective in chilling tolerance and the reduction of disease incidence in pepper seedlings.
A medicinal herb, Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni which is grown under physical stresses such as simulated microgravity, shaking, and low temperature for 4 days, showed fresh weight decrease of 3.6%, 21% and 8.7% compared with the respective control. On control plants, the radical scavenging value of DPPH represented 86% and 55%, respectively in the leaves and stems extracts. Relatively weak antioxidant activities of 22% and 27% were measured respectively in AA (ascorbic acid) and BHA (beta-hydroxyacetic acid) known as synthetic antioxidants. The radical scavenging effect of DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl hydazal) in stevia plants under a simulated microgravity was observed to be consistently higher relative to the control, whereas those effects of shaking and low temperature treatments rapidly increased and then reduced after 6 hours in case of shaking process and 24 hours in case of low temperature treatment, which results had similar levels of scavenging effects to the control. The plants under simulated microgravity showed the highest level of activity with the value of 147% and the shaking and low temperature treatments showed the increases of SOD activity by 121% and 125%, respectively. From the above results, it is clarified that the simulated microgravity is more effective to the antioxidant activity than those of other abiotic stresses.
