This paper examines the effect of bargaining power over intermediate goods prices on innovation and economic growth using a Schumpeterian growth model. The notion of "intermediate goods prices" broadly indicates the reward to innovators including innovative SMEs as well as intermediate goods producers that are vertically integrated to big businesses. From this viewpoint, this paper sets up a Schumpeterian growth model that incorporates the market power between final goods producers and intermediate goods producers. The results show that the reduction of intermediate goods prices slows down long-run growth rates as it erodes the reward to innovations. Lower intermediate goods prices decrease marginal productivity of capital and real interest rates. However, the harmful effect of lower profits on innovations outweighs the beneficial effect of lower interest rates. Simulations using Korea's data for various cases show that in all cases the policies that raise the share of intermediate goods producers are as powerful as the R&D subsidy policies in raising growth rates. Therefore, fair trade policies that enable intermediate goods producers-especially SMEs to obtain more fruits of innovations will be helpful for long-run economic growth.
Characteristics of cell growth and heavymetal adsorption by recombinant Saccharomyus cerevisiae strains harboring multiple copies of the CUP1 gene encoding metallothione (MT) protein were studied in batch cultures. Recombinant S. cerevisiae strains harboring multiple copies of the CUP1 gene were superior to the host and wild-type yeast strains in terms of cell growth and heavy metal removal, indicating that the copy number of the CUP1 gene for MT expression played an important role in the adsorption of heavy metals. It was suggested that the CUP1 promoter for the MT expression is induced by manganese and zinc as well as copper An optimum copper concentration for MT expression and concomitant adsorption of heavy metals by recombinant S. cerevisiae was found to be 0.31 mM. A nonionic surfactant Triton X-100 enhanced cell growth by 17.7% and removal of zinc by 6.1% compared with the control case.
Specific growth rate was controlled for the repression of acetic acid formation in the fed-batch fermentation of recombinant Escherichia coli. With controlled specific growth rate, we studied the effect of the specific growth rate on cell growth, glucose consumption, acetic acid formation, and the expression of recombinant protein (${\beta}$-lactamase). High specific growth rate caused the accumulation of glucose and acetic acid, and lowered the production of recombinant protein. However, the addition of methionine recovered the gene expression by alleviating the negative effect of acetic acid at high specific growth rate.
Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a non-surgical treatment for symptomatic, benign thyroid nodules. This treatment works by heating and destroying the nodule tissue, which results in reduction of its size and alleviation of the symptoms involved. RFA is indicated for nodules which are confirmed to be benign on two or more cytological or histological examinations, and which result in clinical symptoms requiring medical treatment. It is associated with good short-term outcomes on one-year follow-up; however, 20%-30% of the nodules regrow after more than three years. Therefore, on the basis of long-term follow-up, management of regrowth is key to patient care following RFA. Regrowth is more likely to occur in nodules that are large in size prior to RFA, and in those with high or increased vascularity. Recently, new techniques such as hydrodissection, artery-first ablation, and venous ablation have been introduced to inhibit regrowth. In addition, appropriate criteria for additional RFA should be applied to manage regrowth and prolong its therapeutic effects. RFA is essentially an alternative to surgery; therefore, the ultimate goal of this procedure is to avoid surgery permanently, rather than to achieve temporary effects.

In this study the extracellular production of 5-aminolevulinic aicd (ALA) by recombinant E. coli BL2l (DE3) pLysS harboring the plasmid pFLS45 are investigated. Optimum concentrations of succinic acid and glycine for cell growth and ALA production were found to be 30 mM and 15 mM, respectively. Levulinic acid (LA) as an inhibitor of ALAD was added to the culture medium in the end of exponential cell growth phase and its optimum concentration was 30 mM. Growth of recombinant E. coli BL2l (DE3) pLysS (pFLS45) was largely dependent upon the pH value of culture medium. When the pH of culture medium was in the range of 6.0 and 6.5, high cell mass and ALA production were obtained. IPTG induction for the expression of the fusion gene did not enhance the production of ALA. Recombinant cell grew at 30't faster than at 37$^{\circ}C$, but ALA productivity was lower than at 37$^{\circ}C$. Repeated addition of glycine, succinic acid, and LA increased the production of ALA and the inhibition of intracellular ALA dehydratase activity, with up to 1.3 g/L ALA having been produced in the cultivation.

The growth of recombinant E. coli and formation of the by-products were investigated. Ammonium phosphate is known to affect the cell growth as well as the enzyme formation. When initial ammonium phosphate concentration was 0.5g/L, cell mass was 4.1g/L. By adding tryptone to the medium, acetic acid formation increased while lactic acid formation decreased. In cultivating recombinant E. coli, lactic acid and acetic acid turned out to be important by-products which affected cell yield and growth rate. Initial ammonium phosphate and tryptone concentration were optimized in our research and can be applied for other culture of recombinant E. coli.
