The im of the present study is to introduce and develop the concept and theory of conspectus for the first time in Korea, and to propose a new evaluation model for book collection by actually applying the developed methodology to the collection of a special library dedicated to Biblical Studies. Conspectus is a standardized and objective evaluation method that classifies the main collection according to the division, category, subject, and then gives each collection ots appropriate collection level code by analyzing the classified collection in terms of three different dimensions, which are Current Collection Level(CL), Acquisition Commitment Level(AC), and Collection Goal Level(GL). To evaluate the collection of the sample library, shelflist analysis, list checking, acquisition data in ordering process by their main subject, and survey of its users have been carried out, and all of their results ahve been indicated in terms of eleven collection level codes developed by WLN Conspectus. T e collection of sample library was evaluated as '3cW' for CL, '4W' for AC, and '4W' for GL when the Conspectus methodology was applied for evaluation. This study could be utilized as an collection evaluation model for theological libraries, and become a basis to bring about more active cooperative collection development among related libraries.

The purpose of this study is to develop detailed items and elements to be included in a national guideline for school library collection which can be used as a basis and standard for establishing collection management policies in individual school libraries. For this purpose, materials related to the collection management of school library were analyzed with the international and national level. As a result, the international materials emphasizes accessibility and resource sharing of digital materials besides quantitative standards of the library collection and deal with the process for the objection collection. In this study, items to be included in the national guidelines are divided into general principles of collection management and collection management guidelines, and elements of the each item are suggested. And proposed systematic bases for efficient application of the national guidelines to school libraries.

The description of resources at collection-level is being recognised as an important component of information services that seek to provide integrated access to distributed resources. This research investigated the concept, necessities, and standards of collection level description which manages heterogeneous and distributed resources effectively. Also this research reviewed collection level description projects in other countries to show a new direction of subject access in digital libraries.

Collection Development Policy(CDP) is the master plan for managing libraries and information centers through which the features and categories of collections are defined and sorted. The National Digital Library therefore needs to determine its manifest principles based on CDP regarding the magnitude of acquisition, the acquisition priority and the magnitude of purchases. This paper pertains to the principal model for NDL Collection Development Policy as a primer for establishing NDL Collection Development Policy in order to illustrate essential elements of national collection development policy and provide general guidelines for NDL Collection Development Policy. To propose an independent Collection Development Policy appropriate for NDL by analyzing cases in digital resource development policies. To guide establishing principles for determining the types and magnitude of NDL collection acquisition, prioritizing acquisition, making decisions on purchase magnitude and licensing. To identify the essential elements in systematic development of national digital information resources; and to propose a model for NDL's CDP accordingly.

The purpose of this study is to examine 5 writing guidelines of reference collection development policy(RCDP) and to identify major elements of RCDP through the comparison and analysis of 24 RCDP in academic libraries in the U.S. As a result of this study, a total of 9 elements(5 core elements and 4 selective elements) were identified. Five core elements were (1) introduction, (2) scope, size, and level, (3) format, (4) types, and (5) management(i.e., selection, weeding, evaluation, and responsibilities) of reference collection. The results of this study would be helpful to those academic libraries which are planning to write RCDP in academic libraries in the near future.

The purpose of this study is to diagnose the current status of alternative materials in Korea and to suggest directions and goals for the development of alternative materials. The comprehensive list of national alternative materials and the list of popular and new books were analyzed using the collection evaluation method. Results first the percentage of alternative material collections based on the popular book list for 10 years is 90.1%. The production rate of alternative materials is low in the subjects of 'Language', 'Art' and 'Technology and Science'. Most of the service formats were 'text only daisy'. Second, the CCHR(Common Collection Holding Ratio) and CUI(Collection Uniqueness index) of alternative materials were analyzed using the union catalog. Libraries with a large volume of books have a high proportion of CCHR and CUI. Topics with the highest CCHR are 'Literature' and 'Social Science'. The subjects with the highest collection uniqueness index are 'religion', 'art', and 'language'. Third, the replacement ratio of new books for 3 years is 5.09%. During the same period, the average book purchase rate of public libraries was 8.83%. The average book purchase rate in public libraries is 8.83%, and it is necessary to increase the collection rate of alternative materials based on this ratio.

This study strives to perform a pilot collection assessment study with the political science collection in a university library. Employing the basic list-checking analysis method, the study scrutinized the collection statistics and the circulation statistics, and check the current library holdings with a standard list which was composed of cited works extracted from course syllabi, theses, dissertations and faculty research papers. Although the study is a pilot case study that a particular model was applied to a collection in the field of political science, the result and procedures of the assessment will provide some implications regarding collection assessment in university libraries.

A national library bears responsibility to collect, develop, manage and preserve the national knowledge resources and heritages. The institution, in order to accomplish this duty, should center on systematically developed collection development policy. This paper, in this regard, strives to propose a model to comprise of basic principles of collection development of a national library in order for the effective management of resources by the types and subjects. Major emphasis was put on the nature of a national library as a legal deposit library, an information gateway, and a repository for national information resources. As a result, a model collection development policy appropriate for a national library has been proposed by analyzing cases in other countries to guide establishing principles for determining and analyzing the types and magnitude of the collection acquisition; by applying the Five-level conspectus to be optimal to collection magnitude; and, by identifying the essential elements in systematic development of national knowledge/information resources.

공공도서관은 지역주민의 다양한 정보요구와 관심사를 충족시키기 위해 필요한 각종 정보자료를 광범위하게 구성하여야 한다. 이렇듯 공공도서관은 방문하는 이용자들의 배경이 다양하고 도서관을 찾는 목적 또한 다양하기 때문에 모든 이용자의 요구를 충분히 만족시키기에 어려움을 겪고 있으며, 이를 극복하기 위한 노력으로 공공도서관 자료의 만족 수준을 높일 수 있는 장서개발정책 연구가 필요하다. 이에 따라 본 연구는 공공도서관의 장서개발정책을 제안하기 위해 서울특별시 소재 구립 공공도서관 10개관 이용자들을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하여 이용자의 장서 이용 행태를 파악하고, 이를 바탕으로 서울시 구립 공공도서관을 위한 장서개발정책을 제안한다.

The writer investigated the academic values of the titles based upon book annotations included in Gunseo-pyogi, or An Annotated Catalog of books written and edited by the goverment. This paper examined various types of evaluative methods adopted in Gunseo-pyogi, and then compare them to the modern general library criteria of book selection. The writer found the fact that the academic qualifies of books listed in Gunseo-pyogi were even more excellent than the modern criteria for good books in the point of level of authors and contents.
