  • Weak persistence of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) under continuous grazing management has been limited its availability in the mixture with grasses. The experiment was carried out to determine the effect of defoliation interval on the regrowth and morphological characters of the clover cultivars. Individual plants of Regal (large leaf), Grasslands Huia (medium-small leaf) and Aberystwyth S184 (small leaf) were grown in 15cm plastic pot containing a 1: 2: 1 soil:sand:Promix mixture for 55 days, and then clipped to remove all fully expanded leaves every 7, 14 or 28 days. For the analysis of the cultivar response, plants were sampled on the final harvest date(0), and 1, 3, 7, 14 and 28 days after the final harvest date. Harvested dry weight of all cultivars declined as defoliation interval was increased, and that of Regal was the highest compared to the other cultivars. During the regrowing period, increase of total plant dry weight was due to that of leaf and petiole dry weight, and that of Osceola was greater than the others. Although total leaf area and mean single leaf area were increased during the regrowing period, they were reduced with increased defoliation interval and those of Osceola were the greatest until 14-days regrowth. S184 possessed the most number of leaves and Osceola did the longest petiole since 14-days regrowth although the more defoliation, the less nunber of leaves per plant and the shorter petiole. Stolon length and growing tips of all cultivars increased steeply during regrowth, while they were decreased with increased defoliation interval and those of S184 were the highest. More frequent defoliation had detrimental effects on regrowth of white clover, although larger leaf type was productive but less persistent in a mixture with grasses than smaller leaf type.

  • The southern coastal area of Korean peninsula maintains unique natural views, social environment and tourism infrastructure. Even though the coastal area has world-class tourism resources and a great potential for development, it was an outsider from the tourism development in Korea. The coast development has recently reemerged because of increased tourism demand in the Northeast Asia, however, increased interest for the outstanding marine tourism resources and the marine culture, improvement of accessibility to the coast Considering these characteristics, the southern coastal area will be grown to a marine resort-belt, which will serve as a marine tourism hub in the Northeast. In the long run, it can be developed for leisure residential space with environment-friendly well-being fashion, new growing area that continuously drives the local development and area for a mutual development between Yeongnam and Honam Region. To accomplish this vision, several strategic matters should be resolved. Mall strategic issues are as follows: the loosening related rules and regulations that limit the development, legislation of a special law for tourism promotion, supporting for investment in public service and strategic investment, establishment of a marine tourism route connecting China-Korea-Japan, formulating new planning for Hallyo-Haesang Marine Park, designation of special marine tourism development zone, and invitation of the World Expo 2012.

  • This paper analyzes the asymmetric pass-through effects of crude oil price changes on export prices in Korea's manufacturing sector using a nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag (NARDL) model. These pass-through effects are important for Korean companies that are highly dependent on exports. Because the effects differ by industry, eight sectors of the manufacturing industry were examined. The model is effective for separately testing the long-term and short-term differences between the export-price pass-through effects when crude oil prices increase and decrease. The estimation results show that there is positive pass-through to export prices as crude oil prices change, and there are asymmetric effects in some manufacturing sectors. Short-term asymmetries were detected in the export prices of five sectors that include general machinery and transport equipment, and significant long-term asymmetries were found for petroleum and coal products and for textile and leather products. The long-term export price of oil and coal products rose by 0.992% with a 1% increase in the oil price and fell by 0.977% with 1% decrease. Therefore, corporate strategies and government export policies should be established in accordance with these asymmetric pass-through effects.

  • Water Footprint is utilized to analyze direct and indirect water consumption for sustainable water resource management. This study aims to understand potential applicability of water footprint concept by analyzing the status of water consumption and related water policies in Seoul. We analyzed a direct gray water footprint and the blue water footprint in Seoul affected by the social and economic characteristics of the consumers in the city. In particular, in order to analyze the blue water footprint represented by both surface and underground water for the provision and consumption of products, we calculated the actual water consumptions of surface and underground water for 25 districts in Seoul. Our analysis in consideration of population and households indicates that Jung-gu has the highest blue water footprint followed by Jongro-gu, Gangnam-gu, Yongsan-gu, and Seocho-gu. Gray water footprint was calculated by estimating the amount of water for purifying wastewater to meet the water quality standard (above BOD 3.5ppm) for each district. As a result, Jung-gu has the highest gray water footprint, followed by Jongro-gu, Gangnam-gu, Yongsan-gu, Seocho-gu, and Youngdeungpo-gu. Our study suggests the potential value of using water footprint concept to complement the current limitations of water use management focusing on water supply control. We expect that our analysis will provide an important basis for considering water use management which is economically and socially more resilient and sustainable.

  • In this study, we figured out that music modes and item types could affect people's urged decision making through a k-value which results from a delay discounting's hyperbolic function. Generally, high k-value is related to impulsive decision making. Concretely, there was a significant interaction between items and music. For the luxury item, the k-value was higher while listening to major music than minor. However, for the non-luxury item condition the k-value difference was not significant between two pieces of music. Moreover, we expected mood could be manipulated after listening to the music and mediate a difference of tendency. We used first movement as an allegro and second as an andante of Mozart piano concerto No.5 D-major and No.20 D-minor for stimuli. As a result, mode and tempo's main effects were not significant. Nevertheless, there was a significant two-way interaction. To put it concretely, the k-value of major condition was marginally higher than minor condition on allegro. However, the k-value of major condition was significantly lower than minor condition on andante. Also, depressed degree difference was significant but it was not significant as a mediator. Set depressed degree as a predict variable and future time span as a mediator, further research found future time perception partially mediated the effect that depressed degree affects impulsivity.

  • HMM-based Text-to-Speech systems generally utilize context dependent tri-phone units from a large corpus speech DB to enhance the synthetic speech. To downsize a large corpus speech DB, acoustically similar tri-phone units are clustered based on the decision tree using context dependent information. Context dependent information includes phoneme sequence as well as prosodic information because the naturalness of synthetic speech highly depends on the prosody such as pause, intonation pattern, and segmental duration. However, if the prosodic information was complicated, many context dependent phonemes would have no examples in the training data, and clustering would provide a smoothed feature which will generate unnatural synthetic speech. In this paper, instead of complicate prosodic information we propose a simple three prosodic boundary types and decision tree questions that use rising tone, falling tone, and monotonic tone to improve naturalness. Experimental results show that our proposed method can improve naturalness of a HMM-based Korean TTS and get high MOS in the perception test.

  • This study's purpose was to investigate the characteristics of a traditional Korean rice wine containing lactic acid bacteria (LAB), called makgeolli. The makgeolli was brewed with the alcohol-tolerant Pediococcus acidilactici strain K3, and was analyzed for LAB cell counts, alcoholic content, turbidity, pH, total acidity, amino nitrogen, total sugars, reducing sugars, solid contents, and organic acids. The physicochemical properties of the makgeolli were mostly maintained during fermentation (9 d) and storage (15 d). We also monitored the properties of LAB-supplemented commercial makgeollies, after adding P. acidilactici K3 at a concentration of $10^7CFU/ml$ makgeolli, for one month. Most of their properties, such as alcoholic content, turbidity, pH, total acidity, amino nitrogen, total sugars, reducing sugars, solid contents, and organic acids, were preserved during storage at $10^{\circ}C$, suggesting that makgeolli supplemented with live LAB can be produced. These results suggest that alcohol-tolerant P. acidilactici K3 can be used for makgeolli brewing either as a starter or as a supplement.

  • Since late 1970s, water quality monitoring had been performed in Korea by various agencies according to their own needs and objectives. Lacking of consistency in principles, such diverse operation has been producing difficulties in management of information on water quality parameters. These difficulties resulted from the fact that the expansion of monitoring networks had been based not on systematic methodology with considerations on scientifically established planning objectives but on personal experiences and subjective judgments in locating monitoring stations. This study aimed, therefore, to develop a selection methodology for locating monitoring stations to provide various informations on water quality to satisfy various monitoring objectives such as understanding short and long term trends of water quality, monitoring violations to water quality standards, identifying external causes and sources affecting water quality changes, supporting utilization of water resources, examining short-term variations in water quality through a concentrated investigation, estimating pollution loads from each unit watershed, supporting water quality modeling, and establishing informative systems for water resources management. Also, we applied the proposed methodology and presented an improved expansion plan for water quality monitoring networks in the Han River.

  • This study aims to decode newly 'Mojookjirangga' of the Sillian songs on higher viewpoint that is to integrate previous decodings; furthermore to discuss a musical composition of the Sillian song. So to speak, when we read 'hoe(廻)' as 'gam(감)-' instead of 'dol(돌)-' in the song 'Mojookjirangga' which was written in Chinese Characters, such a decoding contributes largely to grip the deep meaning-structure of the elegiac song. Consequently we are able to sing that 'Mojookjirangga' according to the characteristics of national music. However the characteristics of national music are 1) the length of a phrase makes a rhythm, 2) the first beat is strong beat and becomes more and more weak, 3) there are shaking sounds on the long rhythm and changing vowels, 4) there is deep and great dignity in those national music songs. Then we can find those characteristics easily at Sijo-songs. In fact, the Sillian songs and Sijo-songs of Chosun period are more popular music. Then we are going to sing 'Mojookjirangga', referring to the method of Sijo-song and the characteristics of national music. Nowadays such an attempt is to contribute to enrich our national culture and to make the global Korean-stream more abundant.
