  • Although the use of kiosks is increasing recently, the digital divide for the elderly who uses them is not decreasing. We live in an environment where the use of kiosks is becoming a necessity rather than an option. In such an environment, the digital alienation of the elderly is becoming a problem directly related to the quality of life. Even if a kiosk is developed considering the elderly, the verification of its effectiveness is ambiguous, or in most cases, it depends on the designer's experiential ability rather than the consideration of usability. In this study, the usability of the kiosk was analyzed for the development of kiosk contents for the elderly. The metrics were defined as availability, usefulness, efficiency, attractiveness, and visibility. And the measurement method of the measurement index was developed, and the usability of the kiosk for the elderly was confirmed by performing usability evaluation. This is a method to verify whether the kiosk in the development process can support the elderly or whether the improved kiosk actually increases the usability of the elderly. As a result, it is expected to contribute to improving the accessibility of the kiosk.

  • Smartphone use has become a part of everyday life, not only for adolescents but also for elderly and older people. Thus, this study explored the effect of demographic variables, the amount of smartphone usage, type of smartphone use and psychosocial variables on smartphone dependence of the elder group. We analyzed the data of 5627 (50s and 60s) of the Internet overdependence survey data of the Korea Information Society Agency in 2016. As a result of hierarchical multiple regression analysis, More frequency of smartphone use of weekday and weekend, and usage time of smartphone of weekday were related to greater smartphone dependence. More smartphone use for information seeking and games were associated with greater smartphone dependence. And, as loneliness and anxiety increased, smartphone dependence increased, while smartphone dependence decreased, as social capital increased. Through this study, it is necessary to understand characteristics related to smartphone dependence of elder and older group, and to use this knowledge to solve their smartphone dependence. Future studies also need to identify the causal relationship between predictors of smartphone dependence in elderly and older people.

  • Our society is evolving into an aging society. The purpose of this study is to investigate how digital informatization capacity of elderly people, one of the so - called information - neglected people, affects social activities. To this end, we analyzed the relationship between digital informatization level and social activity satisfaction level of old elderly people based on the results of the digital information gap survey in 2017. As a result, it was found that there was a positive relationship between digital access and satisfaction level of social activities, such as whether elderly people have wired / wireless information devices and internet accessibility. Second, it was found that digital information capacity level such as PC usage ability and mobile digital device utilization ability had a positive (+) relationship with only social activities. Third, the level of satisfaction with social activities increased as the level of digital information utilization increased, such as whether they were using wired and mobile Internet. This suggests that the government needs a policy to resolve various information gaps that can enhance the level of digital informatization of elderly people.

  • To solve the digital divide of the elderly, various institutions are educating how to use various smart devices for the elderly. However, it cannot be expected to have a great effect due to the disadvantages of instructor-to-face education and the learning characteristics of the elderly. Accordingly, educational contents using digital devices using robots for the elderly were developed. In this study, Evaluation Indicators were developed to evaluate the usability of digital education using robots. Also, by using usability evaluation based on the developed Evaluation Indicators, we tried to verify the usability of education using robots and to confirm the possibility of expanding the application area. In order to successfully apply the developing robot technology to various fields, it is essential to verify the usability of contents using robots, and this study on Evaluation Indicators and Evaluation methods is expected to serve as a foundation.

  • The purpose of this research are as follows. The first is to investigate the mediating effect of interpersonal skill on the relationship between the ability to use Internet and social activity among the 50's and 60's. The second is to compare 60's latent mean of core variables with 50's ones in terms of information gap. The data was Seoul welfare panel data made by Seoul welfare foundation in 2008 and the total subject was 941(50's=644, 60's=297). When it comes to the research methods, structured equation analysis for verifying the mediating effect and latent mean analysis for comparing the two groups were practiced. The results of this research are as follows. First of all, interpersonal skill did function as partial mediator. Second, according to the latent mean analysis, the group of 50's showed a more higher level of the ability to use Internet. On the other hand, the group of 60's revealed a more active social participation. In conclusion, Information educational programs should focus on Internet communication skill for enhancing social activities of the elderly and consider the differentiations among the elder generations.

To achieve this aims, we conducted a literature survey on Elderly Social Activity Programs and local informatization, and then designed a questionnaire including the demographic information and the five variables, i.e., satisfaction on local informatization, satisfaction on health condition, satisfaction on economic condition, satisfaction on human relationship, and participatory intention of Elderly Social Activity (Employment) Programs. The data were collected through online and offline survey targeted those aged over 50 and participated in information literacy program in Korea. A total of 333 valid data were analyzed using SPSS and AMOS statistical packages. The results can be summarized as follows: satisfaction on local informatization and satisfaction on health condition have a statistically significant effect on Elderly Social Activity (Employment) Programs participatory intention. In the comparative analysis of two groups between economic active group and economic inactive group, only health has a statistically significant effect on their participatory intention in economic active group, not only health but also local informatization has a statistically significant effect on the their participatory intention in economic inactive group. Therefore, local informatization is an essential prerequisite and local informatization should be improved for the middle aged and elderlies who have willingness to participate in Elderly Social Activity (Employment) Programs.

  • The definition of digital poverty has not been changed since it was used at the first digital divide survey in 2000s. The objective of this study is to reexamine and redefine digital poverty targets of digital divide survey. This study examines the present state for the target of the digital divide survey focusing on Disabilities, Low-Income and Elders and then redefines digital poverty for them. The results suggest to reexamine 15 types of disabilities by the revised the Disabled Welfare Law as digital divide targets, rather than limiting to physical, brain, hearing and visual disabilities. For the low-income target, people on the second-to-the bottom income bracket as well as those on basic welfare should be included as the target of low-income people for digital poverty. The age of the elder target for digital poverty should be adjusted to sixty-five or more in the era of aging population.
