  • This experiment was carried out to study the preventive effect of cysteine on the toxicities of captafol to the hematological and serum biochemical values. A single dose of captafol(5mg/kg BW, ip) was given to male Sprague-Dawley rats and its toxicities were evalutated by body weitht changes, autopsy findings, absolute organ weight, and hematological and serum biochemical parameters. The single dose of captafol caused significant decreases in body weitht, and absolute liver weight, as-cites, fibrin clot in abdominal cavity, adhesion of liver lobes significant elevation of number of RBC, hemoglobin concentration and serum AST activity, and decreased of serum phospholipid level. Where as cysteine(over 58mg/kg BW) given immediately after captafol appeared to prevent the ascites, fibrin clot in abdominal cavity and liver lobe adhesion. It also prevented the liver and blood, especially RBC toxicites. The results suggest that cysteine and other compounds containing sulfhydryl groups may protect the subjects from captafol-induced toxicity.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop the calibration method for temperature effects to improve the accuracy of the Weigh-In-Motion(WIM) system for collecting long-term truck weight data. WIM system was installed at a location where the truck traffic volume is high and weight data has been collected from January 2010. In this study, as a calibration measure, the first axle weight of Truck Type 10, the semi tractor-trailer is used based on the fact that the first axle weight is relatively constant, independent of the cargo weight. From this fact, calibration equations are developed from the relationship between the axle weight and the temperature(daily mean, maximum and minimum). Analysis on calibrated weight data shows adequacy of the proposed calibration method. Results of this study can be used to improve the accuracy of the WIM system and to carry out more rational design of pavement and bridge structures.

  • Design parameter analysis is performed for a solar-powered UAV, storing potential energy by climb flight. Parameters related to the flight for saving potential energy, i.e. minimum & maximum altitudes for level flight, gliding & climbing angle, design point speed & altitude, gliding & climbing start time are investigated as design parameters. Weight and size of the UAV are determined using a weight model for the components of the solar-powered UAVs. Produced energy and consumed energy are calculated using these weight and size, yielding the required weight of the battery for a given mission. Relationship between the total weight of the UAV and each parameter is investigated. For the parameters listed above, there exist their ranges only where the design is possible. And there exist optimal values of these parameters minimizing the total weight.

  • A MDO study of a midium-sized solar powered High Altitude Long Endurance (HALE) UAV has been performed, focused on energy balance. In the MDO process, Vortex Lattice Method(VLM) is employed for the aerodynamic modeling of the vehicle, of which structural weight is estimated with the modeling proposed by Cruz. Tail volume ratios have been set as constants, while the location of tail surfaces is determined from longitudinal static stability criterion. By balancing the available energy from solar cells, battery, and altitude, with the energy-requirement of the vehicle, the possibility of continuous flight over 24-hours has been investigated. The solar radiation level is set as that of summer at the latitude of $36^{\circ}$ north. During the daytime, the aircraft climbs using solar energy, accumulating potential energy, which supplements energy balance during the night. Optimizations have been sought in size of the vehicle, its weight distribution, and flight strategy.

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the acute oral toxicity of Corydalis turtschaninovii BESS. in Sprague-Dawley(SD) rats. Male and female rats were administered orally with Corydalis turtschaninovii BESS water extract. We measured the number of death by clinical signs and gross findings for 7 days. After 7 days, we measured the whole body and individual organs' weight. We also analyzed hematological changes. The result, no dead SD rats and no clinical signs were found during the experiment period. Also other specific changes were not found between control and treated groups in hematology and serum biochemistry. The results indicated that there were no significant changes of gross body and individual organs weight in SD rats. These results suggest that water soluble extract of Corydalis turtschaninovii BESS. has not acute oral toxicity in SD rats.

  • The corrosion durability of steel bridge coatings, such as organic and metallic coatings, is often evaluated by field exposure tests, but such tests take from several years to decades to complete. As a potential method for fast corrosion testing, accelerated exposure tests were considered in this study. The S6-cycle accelerated exposure test, specified in the Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS K5621), was carried out on uncoated structural steels for 30, 60, 90, 120 and 150 days, and the resultant weight loss was determined. The weight loss was compared with that obtained from previous field exposure tests, and acceleration factors of the S6-cycle test to field exposure test sites were determined. The application of the S6-cycle accelerated exposure tests to field environments was presented based on the acceleration factor and the amount of flying salt.
