Characterization of Acryl Polymer Concretes for Ultra Thin Overlays (초박층 덧씌우기용 아크릴 폴리머 콘크리트의 특성 연구)

  • This study is performed to evaluate the physical and mechanical characteristics of an acryl polymer concrete that is developed as an overlay material for cement concrete slabs and pavements. Various laboratory tests including viscosity, flow, compressive strength, flexural strength, tensile strength, linear shrinkage, thermal expansion and thermal compatibility tests are performed. It is observed from the laboratory tests that the acryl polymer concrete developed in this study satisfies all the requirements suggested by ACI guideline. In addition to the laboratory tests, an accelerated performance testing (APT) is conducted to validate the performance of the acryl polymer concrete. During the APT, no significant distresses are observed until 15,903,939 cycles of equivalent single axle loading is applied. Finally, a 10mm thick overlay with the acryl polymer concrete is applied on top of an old deteriorated concrete pavement to evaluate field performance. Right after the field construction, skid resistance, noise and roughness are measured. The skid resistance and noise level have been significantly improved while the roughness is increased. Periodic investigation for the field study section will be conducted to evaluate the long-term performance.

  • 해안도로에 건설되는 콘크리트 포장체는 염해의 영향을 받는다. 또한 해안도로의 기초가 되는 지반은 약 5%가 연약지반으로 이루어져 있으며, 이에 대해 적절한 처리가 이루어지지 않으면 시간이 지남에 따라 침하가 발생하여 포장체에 부정적인 영향을 끼칠 수 있다. 연약지반의 장기적 거동에 의한 부등침하로 콘크리트 포장체에 균열이 발생할 경우, 염분의 침투 및 포장체내로의 확산이 가속되어 균열을 더욱 심화시키는 역할을 하게 된다. 본 연구에서는 이와 같이 포장체와 하부지반의 상호 유기적인 관계를 규명하고 부정적 영향의 정도를 예측함으로써 해안도로의 건전성 및 공용성을 확보를 위한 근간을 제공하고자 한다.

  • Better understanding of in-situ mechanical behavior of pavement foundations is very important to predict long-term effects on the system performance of transport infrastructure. For this purpose resilient stiffness characterization of geomaterials is needed to properly adopt such mechanistic analysis under both traffic and environmental loadings. In this paper in-situ monitoring data from KHC test road were used to analyze the non-linear response using finite element method for a selected constitutive model of foundation geomaterials, and the results were compared with the field data.

  • The railway concrete track has been increasingly adopted for high-speed train such as KTX due to its high running stability, improved ride quality for the passengers, and low maintenance cost. However, excessive settlement of the railway concrete track has been monitored at embankment sections of the ◯◯ High-speed Line, resulting in the concerns on the safety of railway operation. In order to establish an effective maintenance plan for the concrete track railway exceeding the allowable residual settlement, it is essential to reasonably predict their long-term settlement behavior during the public period. In this study, we developed a model for predicting the long-term settlement behavior of concrete track using recurrent neural network (RNN) and examined the applicability of the developed model.

A Study of Improvement of Urban Pavement Maintenance Technique based on Pavement Condition Evaluation and FWD Data (도로포장 표면조사와 FWD정보에 기반한 도심지 도로포장 유지보수 기법 개선방안 연구)

  • The objective of this paper is to support accurate pavement condition assessment and decision of proper maintenance method and time by conducting visual inspection and calculating the remaining life of pavement from falling weight deflectometer(FWD) data. Each was implemented in the same long-term performance pavement(LTPP) sections. Visual inspection was executed to measure pavement condition indices such as crack, rutting and international roughness index(IRI) and the Seoul Pavement Index(SPI) was calculated based on these results. The dynamic modulus was back-calculated from the FWD data. The remaining pavement lives were determined from equivalent single axle loading(ESAL) and FWD data. Correlation of maintenance priority by each result value was examined. Consequently, the correlation between remaining life to Crack and Rutting was higher than the other factors or indicesbecause IRI is not related to FWD value and SPI value consists with IRI value and other indices. The R-square value of correlation of FWD with Crack and Rutting was 0.65, which indicated an insufficient correlation. Consequently, when decision of maintenance of method, time, etc. is determined, FWD data have to be considered with Crack and Rutting because of those relations.

  • Shotcrete for support of tunnel structures may contact with groundwater. The hazardous components in groundwater may cause corrosion of shotcrete. Also, the hazardous components may deteriorate the engineering properties of shotcrete, such as compressive strength, bond strength, flexural strength and so forth. The more the effect of the hazardous components on the shotcrete may increase, the more the stability of tunnel structure may decrease. The specimens were artificially immersed in various chemical solutions including hazardous components after the specimens were made at the tunnel construction site. It was performed to analyze the effect of the hazardous components in ground water on the engineering properties of shotcrete. The uniaxial compressive strength test, XRD, SEM were conducted to evaluate the durability and corrosion of shotcrete.

Property change of geopolymers after immersion (지오폴리머의 침지 후 물성변화)

  • This study was started to investigate why autoclave curing (AC) specimen showed an improvement in compressive strength after immersion in water for a long time, although AC specimen did not showed a high initial compressive strength unlike our expectations. Distilled water and alkaline solutions were used for immersion and three different curing methods were engaged. It was expected that the compressive strength would be improved after immersion in alkaline solutions; however, there was little difference in compressive strength after 21 day immersion because both new crystallites produced by additional geopolymerization and expansion caused by the alkaline aggregate reaction may prevent the additional improvement in compressive strength. It was concluded that in order to secure the long-term commonality and underwater stability of the geopolymers, it is desirable aging geopolymers while immersing it underwater for more than 21 days after curing using an autoclave.

Thickness Design of Composite Pavement for Heavy-Duty Roads Considering Cumulative Fatigue Damage in Roller-Compacted Concrete Base (롤러전압콘크리트 기층의 누적피로손상을 고려한 중하중 도로의 복합포장 두께 설계)

  • It is important to design the pavement thickness considering heavy-duty traffic loads, which can cause excessive stress and strain in the pavement. Port-rear roads and industrial roads have many problems due to early stress in pavement because these have a higher ratio of heavy loads than general roads such as national roads and expressways. Internationally, composite pavement has been widely applied in pavement designs in heavy-duty areas. Composite pavement is established as an economic pavement type that can increase the design life by nearly double compared to that of existing pavement while also decreasing maintenance and user costs. This study suggests a thickness design method for composite pavement using roller-compacted concrete as a base material to ensure long-term serviceability in heavy-duty areas such as port-rear roads and industrial roads. A three-dimensional finite element analysis was conducted to investigate the mechanical behavior and the long-term pavement performance ultimately to suggest a thickness design method that considers changes in the material properties of the roller-compacted concrete (RCC) base layer. In addition, this study presents a user-friendly catalog design method for RCC-base composite pavement considering the concept of linear damage accumulation for each container trailer depending on the season.

  • Water content of sub-layer in pavement systems has a large effect on pavement performance. Many researchers lately make use of time-domain reflectometry(TDR) probes to measure the soil water content of sub-layer from field monitoring. The laboratory calibration test of TDR probe should be performed with soil field, because TDR probe can cause an error by type, gradation, density, and temperature of soil. This study performed the laboratory calibration test of TDR probe(CS616) with subgrade and subbase material in long term pavement performance(LTPP) sections. And the calibration equations of TDR probe(CS616) were then proposed. It was confirmed from the study that the data of TDR probe monitored in field could be used to estimate the freezing, unfrozen water content, and matric suction of soil.

  • Creep and shrinkage in concrete structures are very complex phenomena in which various uncertainties exist with regard to inherent material variations as well as modeling uncertainties. The creep and shrinkage models which are capable of predicting long-term structural response are specified in design codes such as ACI 209-92, CEB-FIP Model Code 90, etc. However, in the prediction formulas of creep and shrinkage effects of concrete, various kinds of parameters are involved to express the characteristics of concrete under consideration (i.e. the proportion of concrete, the shape of the structure, relative humidity, etc.). And the predicted values from each design code under same environment differ from each other. To predict the characteristics of concrete, the long-term experiments of creep and shrinkage is necessary but this is not suitable for a construction field. In this study, adjustment method of creep coefficient using sensitivity analysis is proposed to predict creep coefficient of concrete exactly and it is checked up on the validity of the predicting method by comparing to the assumed value and predicted one.
