  • By process of treatment for a case which diagnosed as HNP of left posterolateral aspect of L4/5 disc and treated from the 10th, May 2001 to the 23rd, Jun 2001, the results are as follows. Method & Results : This patient was medicated Hwallaktang-gami, taken acupuncture, phototherapy, TENS, electric acupuncture, exercises, Mori Cortex-bee venom acupuncture. As a result, the patient's clinical symptom were improved but a computed tomagraphy confirmed L4/5 and L5/S1 HNP was not changed as seen on repeated CT scanning. Conclusion : These results suggest that among conservative therapies the oriental medical treatments including Mori Cortex-bee venom acupuncture improve clinical symptom effectively. But in this case, the structure of herniated disc was not changed.

A Bibliographic Study on the Research of a Cause for Hypertension and on the Treatment of Acupuncture and Moxibustion of Hypertension (고혈압증(高血壓症)의 원인(原因)과 침구치료(針灸治療)에 대(對)한 문헌적(文獻的) 고찰(考察))

  • Hypertension is not the name of disease but that of syndrome, about which the record of causes and treatments did not exist in the classics. So I surveyed the oriental medical category of hypertension in the classics and studied on the causes and principal acupuncture points of treatment in the modern literature. And a result, I came to the following conclusion. 1. According to the category of hypertension in oriental medicine way, WIND(風), FIRE(火), PHLEGM(痰) were the evoked causes of hypertension. And the greater oart of hypertension's line in the classics was related to DIZZINESS(眩暈), APOPLEXY(中風), WIND OF THE LIVER(肝風). 2. There were exceedingly various causes such as inheritance, mind, emotion, change of nerve, other disease, etc. 3. In the treatment of acupuncture and moxibustion, there were Zusanli(足三里), Quchi(曲池), Fengchi(風池), Baihui(自會), Hegu(合谷), Sanyinjiao(三陰交), Taichong(太衝) which, 7 acupuncture points, showed high ratio. 4. According to the evoked causes, the major acupuncture points became to be different as follow; FIRE(火) : Neiguan(內關 ; P6) WIND(風) : Fengchi (風池 ; G20), Yanglingquan (陽陵泉 ; G34), Taichong(太衝 ; Liv3) PHLEGM(痰) : Zusanli(足三里 ; S36); Sanyinjiao(三陰交 ; Sp6). Basing on the Literature research, I have studied hypertension. I found that there were objective studies on the causes. But I couldn't find any objective study on the category of hypertension in oriental medicine way and the treatment of acupuncture and moxibustion. So I think that more profound study on the category and the interrelation between the acupuncture points of treatment and its dis tribution of the 14 meridians deserves to be continued from now on.

Exploring Consensual Relationships between Discipline and Education shown in "Jungyong" (중용 수양과 교육 동의적 관계 탐색)

  • In Confucianism, education is also meaningful in teaching and changing, but the meaning of education in Chapter 1 of "Jungyong" is very concise and implicit. In Chapter 1 of "Jungyong", "Cheonmyeong(天命)" is called "Sung(性)", and it is called "Do(道)" to follow "Sung", and it is called "Gyo(敎)" to cultivate this "Do". In short, it is education(Gyo) that is practiced to follow the "Mandate of Heaven(Cheonmyeong)". Therefore, the meaning of education in Chapter 1 of "Jungyong" is in line with "Su(修)". Here, the meaning of education does not mean knowledge transfer or teaching scriptures such as the so-called "Cheonja" or "Analects". It means enlightening and cultivating the principles of the world. Discipline is self-change. The inner expansion of an education is to be cultivated, and the teaching of cultivation to others is to be an education. As such, at least in Chapter 1 of "Jungyong", discipline and education are synonymous. If one goes to oneself, it becomes a discipline, and if one goes to others, it becomes an education. The reason why this is important is that we can reconsider the true meaning of education. The universal definition of education today is the transfer of knowledge or skills. However, in "Jungyong", it was said that education is to help others cultivate them. It is not important to convey knowledge or skills, but to help them realize their own "Mandate of Heaven(Cheonmyeong)" so that anyone can wake up and live happily.

A Study on the Gwon Ji (權智) of Jeon-gyeong (『전경(典經)』 「권지(權智)」편 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to clarify the meaning of Gwonji (權智, Authority and Foreknowledge) through the phrases contained in the section, Gwonji of the Jeon-gyeong (known in English as The Canonical Scripture), and to compare the changes that each verse from Gwonji underwent by juxtaposing it against the sixth edition of Daesoon Jeong-gyeong (which was published prior to the Jeon-gyeong) to explore the term's literary meaning. In order to save the world, Sangje descended to human world and performed the Cheonjigongsa (Reordering Works of the Universe) for nine years with the power he exercises over the Three Realms of Heaven, Earth, and Humanity. Based on the plan set by the Cheonjigongsa, Sangje's teachings were spread to humanity and provided as the basis for building the earthly paradise. From this perspective, this study demonstrates its significance by providing a comprehensive approach to the Jeon-gyeong by highlighting the subject of Sangje's authority and wisdom as recorded in the section titled Gwonji. There is also value in the variant verses from Gwonji that the study discovered by comparing and analyzing the phrases from chapters one and two of Gwonji as they appear in the Jeon-gyeong with their equivalents from the sixth edition of Daesoon Jeong-gyeong, which was published in 1965, nearly a decade before Daesoon Jinrihoe's publication of the Jeon-gyeong in 1974. The results of this comparative study of parallel passages related to Gwonji are as follows: First, Gwonji can be understood as the authority and wisdom of Sangje, and this is the core element in realizing the Earthly Paradise through His Cheonjigongsa. Second, phrases related to Sangje's authority and wisdom are spread out in the seven sections of the Jeon-gyeong, and they were written to emphasize the main purpose suggested in each section or chapter. Third, in sections other than Gwonji, the great power of Sangje is exercised to treat matters related to deities and social problems, whereas in Gwonji part, it is dedicated to the performance of Cheonjigongsa. Fourth, there are five sections of the Jeon-gyeong which are organized into chapters. All of these sections and their chapters indicate the year when key events transpired. Fifth, when passages from chapter one of Gwonji is compared to parallel passages from Daesoon Jeon-gyeong, there are several verses that vary in terms of their wording and also sentences that indicate a different dates or times for certain events.

Interpretation of 'Hakyibulsajang (學而不思章)' on Analects of Confucius (『논어』 '학이불사장(學而不思章)' 고석(考釋) - 특히 수양방법을 중심으로 -)

  • Confucius stressed both 'study (學)' and 'thinking (思)' but the two notions are complementary. To precisely measure the importance of the two, however, 'study' outweighs 'thinking.' Yet Confucius primarily states three steps on Analects of Confucius. In other words, Confucius mentioned two steps on 'Haksajang (學思章)' on the surface but it is actually composed of three steps. Then what is the step three? It is a critical issue to grasp the core of Confucius' idea. The ultimate goal of Confucius' idea is, as stressed by Cheng Yi (程伊川), to 'reach the realm of saint by learning,' which refers to a saint as an ideal human character. This paper is to examine three steps of 'oneness of study and thinking (學思合一)' as a way of Confucius' academic methodology to be the saint along with its structure. Saint, in a word, is characterized as 'communication (通).' It means communication through learning and thinking, which are the three steps of study(學)-thinking (思)-communication(通). Confucius emphasizes that this step also is a process itself (知) but it can be truly completed (dual structure) only by practice (行). Eventually, Confucius' academic methodology is of learning scriptures (學), thinking based on this learning (思) and practicing (行) based on this entire procedure (通). In other words, it is of a dual structure with three steps of 知 (study(學)-thinking(思)-communication(通))-practice(行).

Research on the Chapter Titled "Gongsa" from the Jeon-gyeong (『전경』 「공사」편 연구)

  • Jeon-gyeong was published under the command of Dojeon Park Wudang in 1974. The scripture consists of 7 parts and each part has 17 chapters. The earliest record of Gucheon Sangje (1871~1909) can be found in Jeungsan Cheonsa Gongsagi, which was published by Lee Sangho (1888~1967) in 1926. The book was the first oral literature that he created by collecting information and materials on Jeungsan as he personally met with many direct disciples of Gucheon Sangje. In 1929, after three years, Lee complemented the book with additional materials and published the first edition of Daesoon Jeon-gyeong. It was a form of didactic literature stylistically presented as scripture. Lee continued this long journey of work by revising and publishing 6 editions of Daesoon Jeon-gyeong until he published the last one in 1965. The chapter titled, "Cheonji-gongsa (Reordering Works of the Universe)" from Daesoon Jeon-gyeong as the sixth chapter out of a total of 13 chapters in the first edition, but in the last edition, it appears as chapter 4 out of a total of 9 chapters. Here it is shown that the last edition has been shortened when compared to the first edition. Also the number of verses in the chapter has largely increased by almost twice its original size over the 37 years; as it was 81 in the first edition, 94 in the second, 148 in the third, 151 in the fifth, and 175 in the sixth. In this paper, I studied how the verses of "Gongsa (Reordering Works)" from the Jeon-gyeong, which was first published in 1974, have been revised in comparison to the chapter titled "Cheonji-gongsa" from the Daesoon Jeon-gyeong. As the result of comparing each verse of "Gongsa" from the Jeon-gyeong to those of "Cheonji-gongsa" from all six editions of the Daesoon Jeon-gyeong, I could find the following revisions or changes. First, when "Cheonji-gongsa" from the Daesoon Jeon-gyeong is compared to "Gongsa" from the Jeon-gyeong, it can be seen that the number of verses has been changed and some contents have been deleted or added. Second, the sixth edition of the Daesoon Jeon-gyeong has 69 more verses than the Jeon-gyeong, and most of the additions were made in the chapters titled "Haengrok (analects)," "Gyoun (conveyance of teachings)," and "Yesi (forseeing)". These additions show how the verses regarding religious and predictional teachings developed over the years. Third, the verses from "Gongsa" from the Jeon-gyeong contain many descriptions from chapter 2, "Enlightenment of Dao and Miraculous Deeds of Cheonsa (Heavenly Teacher)," chapter 3, "Followers in the Dao School and Precepts," and chapter 5, "Opening of New World and Paradise," from the 6 th edition of the Daesoon Jeon-gyeong. This indicates that "Cheonji-gongsa (Reordering Works of the Universe)" was related to miraculous acts, enlightenment to Dao, teachings given to the followers, the opening of new world, and the building of a paradise. Fourth, some chapters in the section "Cheonji-gongsa" from Daesoon Jeon-gyeong are omitted in "Gongsa" from Jeon-gyeong, and "Gongsa" has some new contents that were not included in previous texts. This shows that there had been adoptions of different materials in the process of transmission.

An Analysis of Clinical Prognosis Factors of Bell's Palsy (Bell's Palsy의 경과에 대한 예후인자 분석)

  • Objectives : This study was designed to evaluate clinical prognosis factors of Bell's palsy patients. Methods : The 100 subjects were chosen from 262 patients over 20years old who was diagnosised Bell's palsy through Acupuncture & Moxibustion and ENT medical specialist after visiting the hospital within 8days of onset of peripheral facial palsy and after Oriental-Western Medicine Treatment, recovered completely or had over three months cares because of incomplete recovery Oriental-Western Medicine Treatment included Acupuncture Treatment, Herb med treatment, medicines treatment, Physical therapy and Electrodiagnostic Test was operated after 7 to 10days after outbreaks of the disease. Clinical prognosis factors were analyzed using House-Brackmann grading system(HBGS) as a measurement of the degree of Facial Palsy. Collected data were analyzed as Chi-Square test, ANOVA test, Independent-Samples t-test regression analysis using SPSS 12.0 WIN Program. Results : 1. There was a significant difference in the results of treatment according to site of palsy, degree of initial palsy, time of initial recovery and existence of recovery after 3weeks from onset as clinical prognosis factors of Bell's Palsy, However, a statistically significant difference was not shown in the results of treatment according to gender, age, existence of Post Auricular Pain, Hypertension, Diabetes and existence of relapse. 2. As a result of overall treatment, 85% of patients were recovered almost entirely and 15% were not recovered completely. 3. There was a significant difference in the onset of Post Auricular Pain and duration of Post Auricular Pain according to the degree of Post Auricular Pain. 4. There was a significant difference in the degree of initial palsy and degree of palsy after 3weeks from onset according to the existence of Post Auricular Pain. However, a statistically significant difference was not shown in the period of time until initial treatment, The time of initial recovery, (H-B), The period from onset to recovey, ENoG value. Conclusions : Based on the above results, prognosis of Bell's palsy was affected by degree of initial palsy, time of initial recovery and existence of recovery after 3weeks from onset.

Effects of Electroacupuncture on the Alteration of Inflammation-related Proteins and Glycoconjugates in the Ankle Joint of Complete Freund's Adjuvant-injected Rats (전침이 Complete Freund's Adjuvant를 주사한 흰쥐의 거퇴관절내 염증관련 단백질 및 복합당질 변화에 미치는 연구)

  • 목적 : 만성 염증성 질환에 대한 전침효과를 알아보기 위해 complete Freund's adjuvant(CFA) 유발 관절염 모델의 거퇴 관절 내 염증관련 단백질 및 복합당질의 변화를 살펴보았다. 방법 : Sprague-Dawley계 흰쥐의 족부에 CFA를 주사한 다음 3일 간격으로 2Hz, 15Hz 및 120Hz 전침자극을 주며 부종 형성여부를 plethysmometer로 측정하여 판정하였으며 30일째 거퇴관절을 취하여 4% paraformaldehyde에 고정하고 EDTA용액에서 탈회시켜 파라핀연속 절편을 얻어 $NF-{\kappa}B$를 비롯한 5종의 염증관련 단백질의 발현 및 복합당질 변화를 살펴보았다. 결과 : 관절연골 내 면역반응 중 연골기질은 반응이 없거나 약하고 연골세포는 $NF-{\kappa}Bp65$, $I-{\kappa}B{\alpha}$, iNOS 반응이 강하며 특히 유리연골층에서 더 현저하였으나 염증 및 전침자극에 따른 변화는 없었다. 관절낭에서 면역반응을 살펴보면 염증유발시 활액세포의 면역반응세포는 $I-{\kappa}B{\alpha}$가 감소한 반면 iNOS, $IL-1{\beta}$는 증가하며 특히 iNOS 증가가 현저하였으며 전침자극에 의해 iNOS 가 감소하였다. 활액막조직에서 모든 면역반응이 증가하며 특히 $NF-{\kappa}Bp65$, $I-{\kappa}B{\alpha}$, iNOS 반응이 현저한데 전침자극에 의해 $IL-1{\beta}$를 제외한 모든 반응이 감소하였다. 복합당질 염색성은 CFA를 주사한 염증유발 흰쥐군이 정상군에 비해 감소하였다. 관절연골 중 구역간질의 중성복합당질 및 연골세포피막의 산성복합당질이 현저히 감소하였다 Lectin반응도 DBA을 제외한 모든 발현이 염증유발시 감소하였다. 그러나 전침처리에 의해 정상군과 유사한 염색성과 lectin반응을 유지하였다. 특히 구역간질의 중성복합당질과 연골세포의 sWGA와 RCA-1 반응이 현저하였다. 결론 : 만성 염증성 동물모델의 거퇴 관절 내 염증관련 단백질은 관절연골보다 관절낭에서, 복합당질의 변화는 관절연골에서 큰 변화를 보였으며 전침의 자극에 의해 이들 변화가 억제되는 것을 알 수 있다. 이상의 결과로 보아 전침처치는 염증관련 단백질 발현 및 복합당질의 변화 억제를 통해 만성 관절염 질환에 효과적임을 알 수 있다.

Inventory Management in Construction Operations Involving on-site Fabrication of Raw Materials (원자재 조립.가공과정을 갖는 건설공사 프로세스의 적정 재고관리 방안에 관한 연구)

  • There are usually plenty of material inventories in a construction site. More inventories can meet unexpected demands, and also they may have an economical advantage by avoiding a probable escalation of raw material costs. On the other hand, these inventories also cause negative aspects to increase costs for storing redundant inventory as well as decreasing construction productivity. Therefore, a proper method of deciding an optimal level of material inventories while considering dynamic variations of resources under uncertainty is very crucial for the economical efficiency of construction projects. This research presents a stochastic modelling method for construction operations, particularly targeting a work process involving on-site fabrication of raw materials like iron-rebar process (delivery, cut and assembly, and placement). To develop the model, we apply the concept of factory physics to depict the overall components of a system. Then, an optimal inventory management model is devised to support purchase decisions where users can make timely actions on how much to order and when to buy raw materials. Also, optimal time lag, which minimizes the storage time for pre-assembled materials, is obtained. To verify this method, a real case is applied to elicit an optimal amount of inventory and time lag. It is found that average values as well as variability of inventory level decreased significantly so as to minimize economic costs related to inventory management under uncertain project condition.

Effect of Walking Exercise with Functional Shoes on Chronic Low Back Pain (기능성 신발을 활용한 보행운동이 만성 요통에 미치는 효과)

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of 12 weeks-walking exercise with functional shoes on chronic low back pain. Methods : The subjects of this study were 18 females from thirty to sixty years old who had suffered from low back pain over 12 weeks. They wore S shoes with curved out-sole and soft material in arch of foot We asked them to walk wearing shoes for 1 hour a day over 4 days a week for 12 weeks. Improvement of the symptoms was evaluated by pain rating scale, Oswestry low-back pain disability index. We measured lumbar lordotic angle, Ferguson's angle, bone mineral density, body composition. The measurements were checked before and after exercise. Results : This study showed significant improvement in pain rating scale, oswestry low-back pain disability index, and body composition. And lumbar lordotic angle, Ferguson's angle and bone mineral density decreased. Conclusions : These results showed that walking exercise with functional shoes could decrease the symptoms of chronic low back pain. But, it's too difficult to conclude whether the efficacy was due to functional shoes or walking exercise because we didn't set the control group wearing general shoes.
