Effects of Positive Psychology Program for Psychological and Affectivity Well-being of Self-Support Participants (자활사업참여자의 심리적, 정서적 안녕을 위한 긍정심리프로그램의 효과)

  • The purpose of this study was to verify the effectiveness of the positive psychological group program for psychological and Affectivity well-being of self-support program participants. To this end, 30 participants in the self-support program were recruited from the B-Self-Sufficiency Center in Gyeonggi Province and divided into an experimental group and a control group, and the experimental group conducted a positive psychology program once a week for a total of 8 sessions. As a result of the study, first, the positive psychology program showed a significant difference in the psychological well-being of self-support program participants. Second, the positive psychology program improved positive emotions and reduced negative emotions, resulting in significant differences in Affectivity well-being. Third, the positive psychology program helped to reduce mental pain. Fourth, in the comparison between groups, there were significant differences in psychological and Affectivity well-being. Therefore, it was proved that the positive psychology program is effective in psychological and Affectivity well-being for self-support program participants.

Factors Affecting Emotional and Social Self-Sufficiency of Welfare-to-Work Recipients: Focused Social Adaptation Program (자활사업 참여자의 정서적 자활과 사회적 자활의 영향요인 연구: 사회적응프로그램 참여자를 중심으로)

  • This study aims to identify effects of welfare-to-work programs that helped welfare recipients promote emotional and social self-sufficiency, focused on social adaptation program for the hardest-to-employ poor with psychological and social work barriers. This study relied on data from mandatory social adaptation program participants among community self-sufficiency organizations in nationwide from December 2010 to January 2011 in South Korea. Hierarchical regression was used to analyze for this study. As a result, among participants, there were slightly than moderate level on emotional and social self-Sufficiency effects. The satisfaction of education program had positive effect both emotional and social self-sufficiency whereas that of health service only had positive effect on social self-sufficiency. Also, these emotional and social self-sufficiency effects differed between the number of needy family in household, type of organization and degree of satisfaction of life. This study suggests that discussion of implications for the development of welfare-to-work program and intervention that target psychological, emotional and social needs for recipients with work barriers.

The Application of Case Management to the Self-support Program (자활사업에서의 사례관리 적용에 관한 탐색적 연구)

  • This article focuses on the use of case management in the Self-support program. Case management is a service modality which provides integrated services for people with multiple needs in the community. The goal to accomplish self-sufficiency of working participants in Self-Support Programs is positively affected by the efforts to reduce high social risks they are exposed. It is recommended that the agencies running Self-support programs apply case management to increase the quality of lives as well as the effectiveness of exiting statuses of conditional welfare recipients. Several service considerations of case management are recommended for the change in the structure and functioning of the Self-Support Program: Integrated view and contextualized thinking, empowerment-oriented approach, and a development of the community support system through networking. Types of case management and practice roles of the case manager applicable to the Self-Support Program are also recommended. Structural aspects of an organization, inter-organizational linkages and contextual factors need to be considered to improve problematic conditions that have not enough resources and appropriate authorities in providing case management functions.

The Moderating Effect of Optimism on the Relationship between Depression and Willingness for Self-Sufficiency in Self-Sufficiency Program Participating Workers (자활사업 참여 근로자의 우울과 자활의지 간의 관계에서 낙관성의 조절효과)

  • The purpose of this study was to verify the moderating effects of optimism on the relationship between depression and willingness for self-sufficiency in self-sufficiency program participating workers. For this study, a sample of 775 self-sufficiency program participating workers completed depression questionnaire, optimism scale and willingness for self-sufficiency scale. The data was analyzed using the Baron & Kenny's moderating effect verification method. The results of the analysis showed that depression had a significant negative effect on willingness for self-sufficiency, and optimism had a significant positive effect on willingness for self-sufficiency. The results verified the moderating effects of optimism on the relationship between depression and willingness for self-sufficiency. On the basis of the results, We discussed that optimism can reduce the negative effect of depression on willingness for self-sufficiency and improve willingness for self-sufficiency. We discussed the optimism promotion program as an intervention method to improve willingness for self-sufficiency in self-sufficiency program participating workers.

A Study on the Effects of the Antipoverty Policy in Local Community : Focusing on the Self-Support System In Korea (지역사회 탈빈곤 정책의 효과 분석 : 경남, 전북지역 자활후견기관 운영의 성과 및 한계 분석과 개선방안의 모색)

  • The Self-Support Program was introduced as an antipoverty policy at 2002 year in Korea. But, the Self-Support Program's negative or positive effects have been debated from diverse perspectives to the present. Thus, in this paper, we analyzed the effects of the Self-Support Program using the survey data from program participants. Even though the effects of Workfare Programs can be evaluated by various indicators(ex. income, employment status, poverty status, etc.), in our analysis the effects of the Self-Support Program are evaluated by participants' self-reliant attitudes and behaviors. Major findings are as follows. First, we found that some kinds of self-reliant attitudes(ex. work commitment, self-esteem, etc.) were build up through participation on the Self-Support program, but some kinds of self-reliant factors(job competence and skill, self-sufficiency prospect, etc.) which are more relevant to the self-sufficiency were not build up thorough it. Second, we found the positive effects of the program among people who are females, olders, less educated, more healthy, and the participants who have acquired more certificate of qualifications. Third, we also found that self-support center's job training program, adequate task matching, agency climates and intra-networks influence on the positive effects of the Self-Support Program. These findings suggest that the Self-Support Program has not been successful up to now and it's reformations are required. It means that objectives of the Self-Support Program as an anti-poverty policy must be obvious and program contents must be diverse. And also program administration systems need to be reformed in oder to raise the effectiveness of the Self-Support Program.

Characteristics of Participants in the Self-Support Program and the Self-Support Outcome (자활사업 참여자의 특성과 자활성과)

  • Characteristic of participants in the self-support program has an intrinsic attribute that has not changed strongly depending on time, as age, sex, and education. By investigating the characteristic of participants in the self-support program related to the self-support outcome, it becomes possible to both set up target groups and give effective self-support programs. This research analyzed the effect of the characteristics of participants in the self-support program to the self-support outcome by General Linear Models(GLM). The results showed that education, self-support program type, region, poverty, age, child protection, sex variables affected self-support outcome by main effects and interaction effects. There was different in pattern of self-support outcome depending on characteristics variables of participants, so it is necessary to make the self-support program in detail fit into characteristics of participants.

  • The aim of this study is to examine the difference of features between poor group and non-poor group. And, it is examined whether there are man and woman's differences. The investigation targeted the person who were using 'Regional self-support center'. They were classified into poor and non-poor group depending on the participation pattern of the self-support programs. Using logistic regression technique, I analyzed the effects of a series of independent variables on the dependent variable of whether or not person is in poor group and then compared the analysis results. The findings and policy implications are as follows. First, it was found that the health condition of women has a significant effect on the likelihood of poverty. Therefore, it is necessary to support appropriate medical service and improvement of health condition to them. Second, the business career of women was one of the factors affecting. Whether the business career is or not, it is necessary to do different support. Third, like what has been known until now, care giving was found to be a heavy burden for woman.

  • This study was conducted to understand the effects of participation perception, self-efficacy, self-esteem, and empowerment on self-support intention of self-support work project participants. For this study, a survey was conducted on participants in the self-support work project within the G-gu area. As a result of the study, it was found that the participation perception, self-efficacy, and empowerment of participants in the self-support project had a positive (+) effect on the self-support will. Also, in the process where participants' perceptions of participation, self-efficacy, and self-esteem affect the will to self-support, it was found that empowerment partially mediated participation perception and self-efficacy and fully mediated self-esteem. Based on these results, the following are practical suggestions for improving self-support project participants' will to self-support as follows. First, systematic training courses are needed in the application and selection of recipients, establishment of self-support plans, and gateway training courses so that participants in self-support projects can correctly recognize self-support projects. Second, it is necessary to systematize the case management system provided by the self-help center and re-establish the role in order to strengthen the participants' hope for self-reliance. Third, it is necessary to identify the strengths of the participants in the self-support project, create results for self-support, and operate a program that strengthens the latent motivation to solve their own problems and change their behavior. Fourth, the empowerment of participants and professional ability of practitioners should be strengthened so that participants can solve the alienation and social exclusion experienced in the process of participating in the project.

  • The current study aims to validate Employment Hope Scale (EHS), a dimension of Psychological Self-Sufficiency (PSS) scale, among self-sufficiency program participants in South Korea. Self-sufficiency has been understood primarily from an economic perspective in both policies and studies, with which the process participants changes has been ignored and neglected. This study suggests psychological approach to self-sufficiency programs for the paradigm shift to 'client-centered' practice. In this regard, this study tests the validity of EHS using exploratory factor analsysi (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) in South Korea, developed from a bottom-up client-centered approach and found a 4-factor 17-item structure as Korean EHS(K-EHS). The study results indicate that the K-EHS can be used as a valid supplementary process evaluation tool for self-sufficiency programs.

Gender Differences in Factors Affecting Willingness for Self-Sufficiency: Analysis of Male and Female Self-Sufficiency Program Participants (자활의지에 영향을 미치는 요인의 성별 차이 - 남성과 여성 자활사업 참여자 분석 -)

  • In order to understand the gender differences in factors affecting willingness for self-sufficiency, this study examined the level of willingness for self-sufficiency of 424 male and female program participants from 36 local self-sufficiency centers nation-wide in Korea, and investigated the factors affecting willingness for self-sufficiency. The results show that, in the male group, age, debt, and family support were statistically significantly associated with willingness for self-sufficiency while depressed mood, professionals ' support, and family support were significantly associated in the female group. While males' willingness for self-sufficiency were found to be higher with older age, possessing no debt, and higher family support, femails' willingness for self-sufficiency were found to be higher when they felt less depressed, and received more support from professionals and their family. Based on these findings, it was confirmed that family support played an important role both in male and female participants, and was found that different factors were associated with willingness for self-sufficiency in male and female program participants. It was also discussed that policy and micro-level intervention need to consider the gender differences in promoting willingness for self-sufficiency.
