Changes in Media Perspectives on Autism and Developmental Disorders (자폐와 발달장애를 바라보는 언론사 시각 변화 -이상한 변호사 우영우 드라마 전후 비교-)

  • 본 연구는 2022년 여름 인기리에 반영된 '이상한 변호사 우영우'라는 드라마가 '자폐'와 '발달장애' 관련 언론사의 보도형태에 어떤 영향을 미쳤는지 분석하였다. 본 연구에서는 2018년 1월 1일부터 2022년 12월 14일까지(약 5년간) 총 54개 언론사에서 보도한 '자폐'와 '발달장애'라는 용어가 포함된 관련 뉴스 기사들을 분석하였다. 그 분석대상 뉴스 빅데이터를 대상으로 키워드 트렌드 분석, 연관어 분석(워드클라우드 제시) 등을 진행하였다. 본 연구결과는 일반 시민 대상 장애인식 개선 프로그램의 개발 등에 활용될 수 있을 것으로 기대된다. 또한 본 연구를 확대하여, 장애인 관련 언론사의 보도태도(긍정-중립-부정 등)를 체계적으로 분석하고자 한다.

  • Autism is characterized by pervasive impairments in social interaction, verbal and non-verbal communication and restricted and stereotyped behavior. It is difficult for autism patients to receive dental treatment as lack of cooperation, so various behavior management method have been tried for dental treatment in clinic. The patients with mild autism can be managed by conventional behavior modification method and phamaco-logical conscious sedation. But the patients with severe autism and multiple dental caries can be treated by deep sedation or general anesthesia. The benefits of children's dental care in general anesthesia are full-mouth rehabilitation in one single appointment. We reported three cases of autism patients who were treated by various behavior management method as to severity of autism.

The Effect of Interactive Metronome Training on Attention to Autism Spectrum Disorder Children: Single Case Study (상호작용식 메트로놈(Interactive Metronome; IM) 훈련이 자폐 스펙트럼 장애아동의 주의집중력에 미치는 영향 : 단일대상연구)

  • Objective: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of interactive metronome (IM) training on attention among children on the autistic spectrum. Methods: This is a single case study, using ABA design, of one child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) who had attentional difficulties. A total of 20 sessions were conducted: 3 baseline sessions (A), 14 intervention sessions (B), and 3 follow-up baseline sessions (A'). During the intervention period (B), IM training was performed. Inattention and attention activities were measured as the dependent variables in all three phases (A, B, and A'). Results: Compared to baseline, the subject's inattention decreased in the IM training mediation period, and the performance of activities requiring attention also improved. The intervention effect was maintained even during the follow-up baseline period. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that IM training positively influences attention among children with ASD with attention deficit symptoms. Further, it provides the clinical basis of IM training as an intervention for children with ASD.

A Study on Experiences of Caring for Children with Autistic Disorder - Focused on Experiences of Parents of the Adult Children - (자폐성 장애인을 자녀로 둔 부모의 돌봄 경험에 관한 연구 - 성인기 자녀를 둔 부모의 경험을 중심으로 -)

  • This study conducted in-depth interviews of seven parents with autistic adults and analyzed them using qualitative case study methods in order to understand overall meaning of care experiences of parents with autistic adult children. Thus, four key topics which are 'experience of embracement', 'experience of anticipation', 'experience of despair', 'experience of resistance' were constructed. Under these key topics, 12 subcategories which are 'accepting reality', 'positive experience', 'gradual improvement', 'desire to provide better quality of life', 'expectation towards the society', 'strenuous lives', 'psychological exhaustion', 'predicted anxiety', 'defensive attitude', 'distrust of social welfare', 'confronting injustice', 'active behaviors' were constructed. According to the analysis, care experiences of parents with autistic adults are not segmentary, but they are intertwined which make them more dynamic. Thus, easing their despair, empowering positiveness to them, and assisting them to have healthy resistant voice are needed to support the parents with autistic adults. Based on the analysis, we suggest an intervention plan to support autistic adults and their parents.

Study of interaction of teachers and family for behavior problems and social skills of children with autism (교사와 가족의 상호작용이 초등부 자폐성장애 아동의 문제행동과 사회성 기술에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of teacher and family interaction on behavior problems and social skills of children with autism spectrum disorder. Survey method was performed with 147 pair samples of a teacher and parents of a child with autism to analyze the influence toward behavior problems and social skills. Samples have been classified into three groups such as the high group in which there exists high interaction level in both teacher and family, middle group in which there exists high interaction level in either teacher or family and low group in which there exists low interaction level in both teacher and family. The results show that the correlation between teacher interaction and social skill of autism children is significant and the level of social skills of high interaction group is higher than that of the middle and low interaction group.

CHANGES OF PSYCHOPATHOLOGY AND DEVELOPMENT IN AUTISTIC CHILDREN THROUGH PARENT EDUCATION PROGRAM (부모교육 참여집단과 비참여집단 자폐아동의 행동병리 및 발달기능에 대한 비교연구)

  • The study was to examine the effectiveness of the educational program for the parents of autistic children in promoting the development and amelioration of psychopathology. Behavioral pathology and developmental function of autistic children of two parent groups, parents who participated in educational program and parents who did not participate in that program, were compared before and after partent education program. For these purpose, the data were collected from 30 subjects(15 for participant group and 15 for non-participant group) who were diagnosed as Autism according to DSM-III at Child-Psychiatry of Seoul National University Hospital during May 16, 1987 through April 30, 1988. Pre and post tests by Schopler's Psycho-Educational Profile scale were performed for all of the subjects and the data were analyzed by Wilcoxon Rank Sum test, Wilcoxon Sign Rank test and $X^2-test.$ The results obtained were as follows ; 1) The autistic children of participant group were significantly higher than those of non-participant group after education on Imitation, Gross motor and Eye-hand Integration scale of developmental function area (p<0.05) 2) After education, the autistic children of participant group were significantly improved in Affect and Language scale of behavioral pathology area (p<0.05). 3) After education, the autistic children of participant group were significantly improved in developmental function, such as perception, Fine motor, Gross motor, Eye-hand Integration, Cognitive Performance, Cognitive Language (p<0.05). 4) The autistic children of non-participant group were significantly improved in Relating behavior and developmental functions such as Perception, Fine motor and Eye-hand Integration at post test in comparison to pre test (p<0.05). From these results, it might be concluded that the autistic children of participant group were improved much more, and obtained higher score in developmental function area than those of non-participant group. It is suggested that this kind of education program helped and supported the parents to do some more appropriate approach for the development of their children.

A FOUR TO SEVEN YEAR FOLLOW-UP STUDY OF SYMPTOMS OF AUTISTIC CHILDREN IN TAEGU AND KYUNGPOOK PROVINCE (대구 ${\cdot}$ 경북지역 일부 자폐장애 환자의 4 ${\sim}$ 7년후 추적 연구 - 자폐장애의 증상 중심으로 -)

  • This study evaluated the improvement of autistic symptoms during the 4-7 year follow-up in autistic children. Fifty subjects(44 males and 6 females whose age ranged between one to 13 years) diagnosed with DSM-III-R autistic disorder were included in this study. Their autistic symptoms were assessed with DSM-III-R diagnostic criteria of autistic disorder(grouped as A, B and C which include 5, 6 and 5 items respectively). The mean of follow-up duration was 6.4${\pm}$1.1 years. Symptoms between baseline and follow-up were examined according to treatment types, age, sex, IQ and physical problems of them were identified. There were statistically significant decreases of symptom items at follow-up as a whole and A, B and C, respectively. The most symptom decrease occurred in communication and followed social interaction, and activities and interests at follow-up assessment. Symptom items that decreased more than 50% at follow-up evaluation include A1, A2, A3 and B1, B2, B3, B4, B5, and C1, C3. Groups with special education only and combined treatment of special education and seizure pharmacotherapy showed better improvement of symptoms than the group with psychiatric pharmacotherapy with special education. Age was a significant factors in the improvement of symptoms. The author concluded that some autistic children improved with aging, therefore they should be treated actively with special education, pharmacothrapy and other scientific methods.

EFFECTS OF THE MOTHER-CHILD ATTACHMENT PROMOTION PROGRAM FOR AUTISTIC CHILDREN (자폐아동을 위한 모-아애착증진 프로그램의 효과)

  • Objectives:This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of the attachment promotion program which was designed to promote attachment between autistic children and their mothers. The program was consisted of play activity centered mother-child interaction, educational activity for mothers by lecture, video-feedback session, and emotional supports. Methods:The subjects were consisted of 11 pairs of mother and child(7 for participant group:PG, 4 for non-participant group:NPG), who were 2-4 years-old autistic children. The data were collected by video-taping, behavioral observations, and analyzed by Wilcoxon Rank(Sign) Sum Test and Content Analysis. Results:The total attachment score increased from pre test to post-test of PG was significantly higher than that of NPG. The scores of attachment behaviors indicating proximity, mutuality and affect increased significantly(p<.05), while some behaviors indicating synchrony and jointattention did not. Especially the affectionate behaviors of PG demonstrated the most notable changes and they became more active, voluntary and reciprocal. After the program, the mother's nurturing behaviors of PG increased more than that of NPG, with no significant difference between two groups. The mother's behaviors to her child of PG became more child-centered, positively responsive, supportively expressive. As the attachment was promoted, there were also positive changes in the children's autistic behaviors with a great deal of individual differences. Conclusion:Our findings suggest that Mother-Child Attachment Promotion Program could be an effective early intervention model for autistic children.

  • To find some involvement of environmental factors in autism, season of birth, birth order, and maternal age at birth of autistic children were investigated Total number of clinical outpatient autistic children was 357, which consisted of 319 male and 38 female, then male-to-female sex ratio was 8.4 to 1, and all subjects were born during $1986{\sim}1988.$ These data were compared with those of controlled general populations. The results were as follows : 1) In monthly and seasonal distributions of birth, autistic children were not different from normal control 2) Comparing with control group by Slater's and Greenwood-Yule's birth order calculation methods, there was no significant difference in birth order of autistic children 3) The maternal ages at birth in autistic group were significantly higher than those of control group(P<01) 4) High-risk pregnancies were significantly frequent in autistic group compared with control group(p<01)Our study supported the idea that at least some environmental factors, especially at-risk pregnancy, are involved in autism causation.
