  • This paper deals with free vibrations of the Timoshenko beam supported by two elastomeric bearings at two far ends. The ordinary differential equation governing free vibrations of such beam is derived, in which both effects of rotatory inertia and shear deformation are included as the Timoshenko beam theory. Also, boundary conditions of the free end are derived based on the Timoshenko beam theory. The ordinary differential equation is solved by the numerical methods for calculating natural frequencies and mode shapes. Both effects of the rotatory inertia and shear deformation on natural frequencies are extensively discussed. Also, relationships between natural frequencies and slenderness ratio, foundation modulus and bearing length are presented. Typical mode shapes of bending moment and shear force as well as deflection are given in figures which show the positions of maximum amplitudes and nodal points.

  • This paper deals with the free vibration of horizontally curved beams with transition currie. Based on the dynamic equilibrium equations of a curved beam element subjected to the stress resultants and inertia forces, the governing differential equations are derived for the out-of-plane vibration of curved beam with variable curvature. These equations are applied to the beam having transition curve in which the clothiod curve is chosen in this study. The differential equations are solved by the numerical methods lot calculating the natural frequencies and mode shapes. For verifying theories developed herein, the frequency parameters obtained from this studs and ADINA are compared with each other. As the numerical results, the various parametric studies effecting on natural frequencies are investigated and those results are presented in tables and figures.

  • In this paper, double Fourier sine series is used as a modal displacement functions of a rectangular plate and applied to the free vibration analysis of a rectangular plate under various boundary conditions. The method of stationary potential energy is used to obtain the modal displacements of a plate. To enhance the flexibility of the double Fourier sine series, Lagrangian multipliers are utilized to match the geometric boundary conditions, and Stokes' transformation is used to handle the displacements that are not satisfied by the double Fourier sine series. The frequency parameters and mode shapes obtained by the present method are compared with those obtained by MSC/NASTRAN and other analysis.

  • Free vibration analysis of helical spring with crack was studied. Natural frequency changes due to the crack was analyzed with respect to crack locations. The effect of crack on natural frequency was decreased as crack location is further from the fixed end of a spring. The frequency change was larger in rectangular-shaped spring than that in circular-shaped spring. It was found that experiment may not be appropriate to determine the presence of crack because no significant natural frequency change can be shown by experiment.

  • This paper is concerned with the application of perturbation method to the dynamic analysis of free-free beam. In general, the rigid-body motions and elastic vibrations are analyzed separately. However, the rigid-body motions cause vibrations and elastic vibrations also affect rigid-body motions in turn, which indicates that the rigid-body motions and elastic vibrations are coupled in nature. The resulting equations of motion are hybrid and nonlinear. We can discretize the equations of motion by means of admissible functions but still we have to cope with nonlinear equations. In this paper, we propose the use of perturbation method to the coupled equations of motion. The resulting equations consist of zero-order equations of motion which depict the rigid-body motions and first-order equations of motion which depict the perturbed rigid-body motions and elastic vibrations. Numerical results show the efficacy of the proposed method.

  • The free vibration of a thin plate with three different boundary conditions is discussed in this paper. A semi-analytical approach to the plate problems has been exploited using computer algebra system(CAS). The approximate solutions are assumed as algebraic polynomials that satisfy the appropriate boundary conditions. In order to solve problems, Galerkin method is used, which is known as an ineffective tool for practical engineering problems, being involved with a large number of multiple integration and differentiation. All the admissible functions used in this paper are generated automatically by CAS otherwise a tedious algebraic manipulations should be done by hand. One, six and fifteen-term solutions in terms of frequency parameters are presented and compared with exact solutions. Even using one-term solution, the comparison with existing data shows good agreement and accuracy of the present method.

  • The main purpose of the present paper is to present both the fundamental frequency and some higher free vibration frequencies for circular arches with variable section, in which rotatory inertia is included. The differential equations are derived for the in-plan free vibration of elastic circular arches with variable section. These equations were solved numerically for the linear variable circular cross-section with clamped-clamped end constraint. As the numerical results, the four lowest nondimensional natural frequencies presented as functions of the nondimensional system parameters : the end moment of inertia to crown moment of inertia ratio, the slenderness ratio, and the opening angle. The effect of rotatory inertia on the nondimensional natural frequency is also reported.
