  • Countercurrent oxidation process (COP) was developed and evaluated for treatment of highly concentrated PCB containing insulating oil. The PCB content in insulating oil taken from Haksanmetal company was found to be 1,512 ppm. The COP utilizes a self-sustained flame which propagates itself in a direction counter to the oxygen flow. The flame removes PCBs adsorbed in activated carbon and, at the same time, regenerates activated carbon. The flame temperature was determined from both mass loss of activated carbon and the relative ratio of CO and $CO_2$ exhausted during COP, and showed that its temperature lied in the range of $650-850^{\circ}C$. Removal efficiency of PCBs was achieved above 99.99% for 5% of insulating oil loaded activated carbon with 1 COP in weight ratio. Also, the same removal efficiency was acquired for 60% of insulating oil loaded activated carbon with three consecutive COP. In addition, specific surface area of activated carbon during COP was recovered to almost similar value of virgin activated carbon. It proved that the COP was much effective in removing high concentration of PCBs in insulating oil easily and affordably.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of acute exercise on antioxidative enzymes in noramal and obese men. The written informed consent was obtained from 16 participants of eight normally healthy persons and eight obesity ones. The baseline level of obesity was determined at 25 % of the body fat. Any subjects had no experiences in participating in exercise and did not take vitamin or mineral supplement. Blood was sampled at five minutes before exercise, at exhaustion, and after 30 minutes of recovery. All statistical analyses and description methods were computed by SPSS window 14.0. Analysis of Covariance(ANCOVA) was performed to know the differences in values between pre- and post- exercise in each group. We found that after exhaustion, the normal group showed higher erythrocyte superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity compared to the obesity group. At exhaustion, the normal group had lower HSP activity compared to the obesity group. Based on the results, an acute exercise of normally healthy people induced an up-regulation of superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity. This plays an important role in the protection of extra-cellular fluid components against peroxide-mediated damage.

  • Purpose: Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) is the most common glomerulopathy causing pediatric renal failure. Since specific treatment targeting the etiology and pathophysiology of primary FSGS is yet elusive, the authors explored the pathophysiology of FSGS by transcriptome analysis of the disease using an animal model. Methods: FGS/kist strain, a mouse model of primary FSGS, and RFM/kist strain, as control and the parent strain of FGS/kist, were used. Kidney tissues were harvested and isolated renal cortex was used to extract mRNA, which was run on AB 1700 mouse microarray chip after reverse transcription to get the transcriptome profile. Results: Sixty two genes were differentially expressed in FGS/kist kidney tissue compared to the control. Those genes were related to cell cycle/cell death, immune reaction, and lipid metabolism/vasculopathy, and the key molecules of their networks were TNF, IL-6/4, IFN${\gamma}$, TP53, and PPAR${\gamma}$. Conclusion: This study confirmed that renal cell death, immune system activation with subsequent fibrosis, and lipid metabolism-related early vasculopathy were involved in the pathophysiology of FSGS. In addition, the relevance of methodology used in this study, namely transcriptome profiling, and Korean animal model of FGS/kist was validated. Further study would reveal novel pathophysiology of FSGS for new therapeutic targets.

  • This paper tries to examine whether the application of joint mobilization to subjects who have the forward head posture due to malalignment in the cervical joint has influence on posture changes and functions in the cervical joint. The subjects were 39 students from G University in Gyeongsangbuk-do. The cervical joint mobilization was applied to 20 subjects and not to 19. The students with a cervical lordosis angle of $21^{\circ}C$ or less, an anterior weight bearing (AWB) of 15mm or greater, and a cervical extension ROM of $70^{\circ}C$ or less in terms of radiography were selected as subjects under their voluntary agreement. The patients actively performed the joint mobilization slowly 8 times per session while therapists continuously applied sustained accessory glide to their painful joints 3 times per week for 4 weeks along with the cervical expansion and flexion in SNAGS among other Mulligan's (1995) techniques. The measurement was carried out in terms of radiographic inspection and neck disability indexes. As a result of the experiment, it turned out that the subjects with the forward head posture had changes in the cervical AWB and ARA, the ranges of expansion and flexion, and the NDI(Neck Disability Index) after the intervention for the experimental group by applying cervical joint mobilization. There were no changes observed in the control group. In conclusion, the application of joint mobilization turned out to have influence on the improvement of cervical joint postures, and craniocervical region functions.

  • Amine-type PP-g-VBC-EDA adsorbent, which possesses anionic exchangeable function, was prepared through photoinduced graft polymerization of vinylbenzyl chloride (VBC) onto polypropylene non-woven fabric and subsequent amination reaction using ethylenediamine (EDA). Adsorption characteristics of anionic nutrients on the PP-g-VBC-EDA adsorbent have been studied by batch adsorption experiments. The equilibrium data well fitted the Langmuir isotherm model, and the maximum monolayer sorption capacity was found to be 59.9 mg/g for $NO_3-N$ and 111.4 mg/g for $PO_4-P$. The adsorption energies were higher than 8 kJ/mol indicating anion-exchange process as the primary adsorption mechanism. The pseudo-second order kinetic model described well the kinetic data and resulted in the activation energy of 9.8-36.7 kJ/mol suggesting that the overall rates of $NO_3-N$ and $PO_4-P$ adsorption are controlled by the chemical process. Thermodynamic parameters such as ${\Delta}G^o$, ${\Delta}H^o$ and ${\Delta}S^o$ indicated that the adsorption nature of PP-g-VBC-EDA for anionic nutrients is spontaneous and exothermic. The PP-g-VBC-EDA could be regenerated by washing with 0.1 N HCl.

  • Human resources are one of the most essential elements of an organization. In particular, the more closed a group is, the higher the value each member has. Previous studies have focused on personal attributes of individual, such as medical history, and have depended upon self-diagnosis to manage structures. However, this method has weak points, such as the timeconsuming process required, the potential for concealment, and non-disclosure of participants' mental states, as this method depends on self-diagnosis through extensive questionnaires or interviews, which is solved in an interactive way. It also suffers from another problem in that relations among people are difficult to express. In this paper, we propose a multi-faced diagnosis model based on social network analysis which overcomes former weaknesses. Our approach has the following steps : First, we reveal the states of those in a social network through 9 questions. Next, we diagnose the social network to find out specific individuals such as victims or leaders using the proposed algorithm. Experimental results demonstrated our model achieved 0.62 precision rate and identified specific people who are not revealed by the existing methods.
