  • The system of magnetic exploration with a drone flight was constructed and applied to the iron mine site. The magnetic probe system installed on the drone used a sensor as Bartington's fluxgate type magnetometer, Mag639 and the A/D converter to collect magnetic intensity values on the tablet PC. The drone flight control module is a highly expandable Pixhawk with allowing 15 minutes of flight by loading 3kg. Experiments on the magnetic field interference range were performed to remove the erroneous effect from the drone with applying RTK GPS to obtain the magnetic intensity value at the accurate position. The accurate location information enabled to obtain the gradient measurement of magnetic field by measuring twice at different altitudes. Also, by using the terrain information, we could eliminate the terrain effect by setting the flight path to fly along the terrain. These results are in line with the field experiments using the nuclear proton magnetometer G-858 of Geometrics Co., Ltd, which adds to the reliability of the drone based aeromagnetic survey system we constructed.

  • A steel pile often utilized to bear heavy loads of the upper sub-structure, e. g., bridge constructions and tall buildings. As the steel piles are driven in the underground, it is not easy to detect the depth of the existing pile foundation when there is no detailed foundation information available. However, accurate informations of the depths of piles becomes critical required when reinforcing the existing structures or constructing new ones at the adjacent stage to assure the safety of existing structures. In this study, we tested the applicability of the three components borehole fluxgate magnetometer for detecting the depths and locations of steel piles which are commonly used in civil engineering. Results showed that the information of location as well as the depth of steel piles could be obtained by using data from the three components borehole fluxgate magnetometer.

  • This paper reports on the design and installation of a thermostat to keep the temperature of the fluxgate magnetometer constant and the data stability evaluation after installation. The thermostat was installed at the Icheon Geomagnetic Observatory operated by the Korean Space Weather Center of National Radio Research Agency. It was designed in consideration of stability of temperature control against safety incident, potential effects on magnetic field measurement, and the temperature control efficiency. After the temperature control device was installed, it was confirmed that the temperature was constantly maintained at the level of 20℃. Delta F and baseline values were used to evaluate geomagnetic data stability, and it was confirmed that delta F and baseline fluctuations were reduced after installation of the thermostat.

  • One of the important ways to improve the performance of magnetometers in satellite exploration is to reduce magnetic noise from satellites. One of the methods to decrease magnetic noise is by extending the satellite boom. However, this approach is often not preferred due to its high cost and operational considerations. Therefore, in many cases, removing interference from the satellite platform in the measured dataset is widely utilized after data acquisition. In this study, we would like to introduce an algorithm for removing magnetic noise observed from magnetometers installed on two solar panels and one main body without a boom.

  • The closed-form expressions of gravity, magnetic, gravity gradient tensor, and magnetic gradient tensor due to a rectangular prism are derived. The vertical gravity is derived via triple integration of a rectangular prism in Cartesian coordinates, and the two horizontal components of vector gravity are then derived via cycle permutation of the axis variables of vertical gravity through the axial symmetry of the rectangular prism. The gravity gradient tensor is obtained by differentiating the vector gravity with respect to each coordinate. Using Poisson's relation, a vector magnetic field with constant magnetic direction can be obtained from the gravity gradient tensor. Finally, the magnetic gradient tensor is derived by differentiating the vector magnetic with respect to appropriate coordinates.

  • The KSR-3 magnetometers consist of the fluxgate magnetometer (MAG/AIM) for acquiring the rocket flight attitude information, and the search-coil magnetometer (MAG/SIM) for the observation of the Earth's magnetic fluctuations. The position (latitude, longitude, and height) and flight condition (the transformation angle) of the rocket is measured after the data based on these two magnetometers are compared with IGRF The gap in the vector of magnetic field between the position of the launching point and an impact point is taken into account in data reduction. Angular variation of pitch, yaw, and roll can be researched when the data is applied to the coordinate system of the rocket.

  • An elongated object in one direction can be approximated as a line segment. Here, the closed-form expressions of a line segment's vector magnetic and magnetic gradient tensor are required to interpret responses by a line segment. Therefore, the analytical expressions of the vector magnetic and magnetic gradient tensor are derived. The vector magnetic is converted from the existing gravity gradient tensor using Poisson's relation where the gravity gradient tensor caused by a line segment can be transformed into a vector magnetic. Then, the magnetic gradient tensor is derived by differentiating the vector magnetic with respect to each axis in the Cartesian coordinate system. The synthetic total magnetic data simulated by an iron pile on boreholes are inverted by a nonlinear inversion process so that the physical parameters of the iron pile, including the beginning point, the length, orientation, and magnetization vector are successfully estimated.

  • The crystallographic and magnetic properties of the system of $Fe_{1-x}Co_x$(x=0.2 and 0.4) prepared by microwave arc-melting with the maximum power of 3.5 kW and a iron-foil with thickness of 25 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ have been studied by the methods of X-ray diffraction and the measurement of the magnetic hysteresis using the vibrating sample magnetometer at room temperature. The samples were prepared in three different ways: First, pellet form pressed under the pressure of 9,000 N/$\textrm{cm}^2$. Second, the sheet cold rolled. Third, thin sheet treated with the temperature of 90$0^{\circ}C$. The X-ray diffraction pattern of the sample prepared by the first method shows that the crystal structure of the sample is bcc as same as that of Fe with a good uniformity. The iron-foil has the coercivity of 43 Oe and the initial slope of magnetization of 0.328 emu/gOe. The coervicity and magnetization of the sample prepared by the second method increased as the Co content increased. But the initial slop of the magnetization decreased as the Co content increased. This means that the displacement of domain wall is suppressed by the increases of coercivity as the Co content increased. The saturation magnetization of the samples made by the third method increased. On the other hand, the coercivity of these samples decreased. The increase of saturation magnetization of the samples seems to be related to the changes in X-ray intensity after heat treatment. Also some magnetic parameters of the samples were calculated by using a simple model and compared with other values.
