Influence of Fine Aggregate Properties on Unhardened Geopolymer Concrete (잔골재 특성이 굳지 않은 지오폴리머 콘크리트에 미치는 영향)

  • It is possible that aggregates add on to geopolymer based fly ash to mix mortar and concrete like cement. This is necessary to evaluate mineral composition, particle shape, surface, size distribution, density and absorption ratio for fine aggregates due to few detailed research to examine influence of fine aggregates properties on unhardened geopolymer concrete. In this research, used two different fine aggregates, Jumunjin sand(having quartz, mica, feldspar, pyroxene in mineral composition, more than 96% of total size between -0.60 and +0.30mm, angular shape and rough surface) and ISO sand(having almost all quartz in mineral composition, more than 51% size between -1.40 and +0.60mm, simultaneously varied size distribution, spherical shape and smooth surface). After an experimental result of the varied ratio of Si/Al=1.0-4.1 geopolymer paste, mix proportion respectively applied Si/Al=1.5 having the highest compressive strength to mortar and Si/Al=3.5 having the highest consistency to concrete. Geopolymer mortar by mixing with Jumunjin and ISO sand in varied range of 20-50wt.% showed flow size increase between 69.5 and 112.0mm, between 70.5 and 126.0mm respectively. Geopolymer concrete at an addition of 77wt.% of total aggregates ratio showed that average compressive strength was 32MPa and the consistency was favorable to molding. Since ISO sand observing varied size distribution, spherical shape, smooth surface, low absorption ratio resulted in advantageous properties on consistency of geopolymer, geopolymer concrete can be suitable for using the fine aggregates similar to ISO sand.

An Experimental Study for Drainage Capacity Improvement of Waterway with Steep Slope (급경사 사면 도수로의 배수능력 개선을 위한 실험적 연구)

  • In general, the waterway was installed for drain water from steep slope and waterway cover was set up to prevent overflow and water separation at berm of waterway. In this study, hydraulic experiment was conducted to analyze the flow characteristics and enact standard design criteria of the waterway. Hydraulic experimental apparatus which can change the slope of waterway and the length of berm were installed to analyze of flow characteristics at the waterway. The slopes of waterway were $40^{\circ}$, $50^{\circ}$, $60^{\circ}$, and $70^{\circ}$ and the range of discharge were 1.0~5.6 ${\ell}/s$. The flow in berm was distinguished two types such as hydraulic jump and splash flow. These kinds of flows depended on the rates of discharge in waterway. When inlet discharge was below 1.1~2.0 ${\ell}/s$, the separation phenomenon of water was generated at upper and lower portion in berm by the splash flow. The scattering range of water particles and length of water separation was measured depending on the slope of waterway. The start point of scattering was about 20 cm(1.3B) from the place connected upper waterway with brem and the length of water separation was till 210 cm(3.5B) from the place connected lower waterway with brem. Therefore, the waterway cover needed to install from starting of berm to 1B and from the lower part of berm to 3.5B.

Effect of Maximum Size and Contents Method of Recycled Aggregate Powder on Engineering Properties of the Cement Mortar (순환골재 미분말의 최대입경 및 치환방법이 시멘트 모르터의 공학적 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • This study is to investigate experimentally the engineering characteristics of cement mortar according to the replacement method and contents of recycled aggregate powder (RP) by collecting the recycled aggregate powder with the maximum size of below 0.08 mm and 0.15 mm. then, the results of the study can be summarized as follows. The flow of flesh mortar represented a trend in decreasing while the recycled aggregate powder was substituted as it is compared with that of plain. In addition, in case of correlation between tests, it appeared that the correlation between flow and ring flow is big. In the case of the characteristics of hardened mortar, the strength showed more improvements as the RP was substituted to aggregate than the case, which is substituted to aggregate. In addition, it was verified that the results in which the RP was substituted to aggregate by 5% represented similar values to that of the plain according to the passage of age.

  • Radioactive materials are in use and have many applications from the generation of electricity to the purposes of research, industry and medicine such as diagnosis and therapy. In the course of their use some of radioactive substances may be discharged into the environment from facilities using the unsealed radioactive materials, which are main artificial sources occurring the public exposure. Discharges are in the form of gases, particles or liquids. This paper provides procedures to estimate the level of the public exposure based on the conservative assumptions and simple calculations in the facility using unsealed liquid sources. They consist of two processes; (1) to calculate maximum concentration of gaseous effluents discharged through the exhaust pipe and average concentration of liquid effluents discharged through the drain of the storage tank, (2) to compare each of them to numerical guidances for the discharges of radioactive gaseous and liquid effluents mentioned in the related notification. For this purpose followings are assumed properly; daily usage, form and dispersion rate of radionuclides, daily amount of radioactive liquid waste and exhaust and drainage equipment. The procedures are readily applicable to evaluate environmental effects by planned effluent discharges from facilities using the unsealed radioactive materials. In addition they may be utilized to obtain practical requirements for radiation safety control necessary for the reductions of the public exposure.

A Tracer Experiment of Sediment Transport Path Using Fluouescent-Tagged Sands (형광사를 이용한 표사이동경로 추적 실험)

  • The economical manufacturing process of fluorescent sediments (FS) which makes use of the understanding of coastal sediment path has been suggested with respect to the Lagrangian viewpoint. First, the fluorescent liquids were made by the mixing of the fluorescent materials, acetone, and xylene. Second, the sediments collected in Gamami beach were desalinized by the freshwater washing, dried indoors to protect the fine-sediment scattering, and classified by the sieve analysis. Finally, the FS which have seven different colors were manufactured by the mixing of fluorescent liquids and prepared sediments. The FS were used to figure out the major sediment supply routes of the intake channel in the YoungKwang nuclear power plant. From the field experiments, it was shown that the sediments were suspended and dispersed by the strong seasonal NW wind and the tide, and the sediments in suspension were flowing into the intake channel due to very strong suction speed. All the FS injected in stations were detected in the channel sampling points, thus we concluded that the sediments in suspension and dispersion were flowing into the intake channel from all directions in adjacent coastal zone.

Sedimentary Environments of Pre-Holocene Kanweoldo Deposit in Cheonsu Bay, Western Coast of Korea (한국 서해 천수만 선현세 간월도 퇴적층의 퇴적환경)

  • The late Quaternary deposit of Cheonsu Bay, up to 20 m in thickness above the Jurassic granite basement, consists of two sedimentary units: an upper Holocene mud and sandy mud deposit (Unit M1), and a lower late Pleistocene sand and mud deposit (Unit M2; 'Kanweoldo Deposit&apos). Unit M1 is a typical Holocene tidal-flat deposit of Cheonsu Bay, showing a coarsening upward, retrogradational facies trend. This retrograding facies trend is probably due to a relative low sedimentation rate during Holocene transgression. Overlain unconformably by Unit M1, Unit M2 deposit reaches up to 14 m in thickness and is mainly composed of muddy sediment with yellow to gray color. This unit is characterized by a variety of tide-influenced signatures such as rhythmic bedding, flaser bedding, crab burrow fossil, marine dinoflagellate assemblage and authigenic glauconite mineral, indicating very similar depositional environment to those of Unit M1 deposit. It suggests that Unit M2 was probably accumulated under the tidal-flat environment during a pre-Holocene sea-level highstand. In particular, the uppermost 3-4 m of Unit M2 appears to have undergone subaerial exposure and subsequent weathering during the sea-level lowstand after deposition. Therefore, stratigraphic unconformity between Holocene and late Pleistocene sediments is highlighted by the desiccated and weathered surface of Unit M2.

Performance Evaluation of a Hybrid Dust Collector for Removal of Airborne Dust in Urban Railway Tunnels (도시철도 터널 미세먼지 제거용 하이브리드형 집진장치의 성능평가)

  • Urban railway tunnels are polluted by resuspension of deposited bottom dust or newly generated wear dust. A hybrid type dust collector consisting of a baffle and an electrostatic precipitator was developed to remove these types of airborne dust when trains are running in the tunnel. Since dust collection efficiency of the hybrid dust collector is inversely proportional to the airflow rate, the relationship between airflow rate and dust collection efficiency was experimentally investigated for two baffle models. Collection efficiencies for dust larger than $0.5{\mu}m$ for the hybrid dust collector model A1, operated at 3.4 m/s, were greater than 30%; those for the hybrid dust collector model A2, operated at 4.7 m/s, were higher than 20%. When the applied voltage was 13 kV, the amounts of $PM_{10}$ collected with model A1 and model A2 dust collectors were estimated at $253{\mu}g$ and $242{\mu}g$ per hour, respectively.

Aggregate Distribution and Wind Erosion in Grass Land of the New Incheon International Airport (인천 신공항 잔디밭 조성지 토양의 입단분포 및 풍식 예측량 산정)

  • Soil aggregate distribution and its relation to wind erosion were examined for the surface soil of the experimental plots for grasses in the New Incheon International Airport, of which soil was reclaimed with sea sands in the Youngjong Island. The soil aggregate with the size between 0.10 and 0.84mm was 74 percents. The 6 percents of the soil aggregates were non-erodible. With this aggregate distribution the wind erodiblity of the soil, I. was $380Mg\;ha^{-1}\;yr^{-1}$ with I value and climatic factor calculated for the dry period from November to May, $45.2Mg\;ha^{-1}\;yr^{-1}$ of the surface soil were estimated to be eroded. The erodible particles with 0.37mm diameter could fly to 17.8, 29.9 and 49.8 meters by saltation at wind speed of 7, 9 and $15m\;s^{-1}$, respectively. The wind erosion could be reduced by increasing vegetation coverage and applying hydrophyllic soil conditioner.

Cooling Effect of Air in Greenhouse Using A Fog Sprayer Consisted of Two-fluid Nozzle with Turbo Fan (터보 팬 2류체 노즐로 구성한 포그 분무장치를 이용한 온실 내 공기의 냉각 효과)

  • For the promotion of the evaporative cooling efficiency of hot air in greenhouse in summer, a fog sprayer consisted of a high volume spraying two-fluid nozzle with turbo fan and a blowing fan was set up at 2.2 m height from bottom of small glass greenhouse and tested to estimate the possibility of the greenhouse cooling. The mean droplet size and the volume sprayed by one of fog sprayer were $29{\mu}m$ and $160m{\ell}/min$. All the droplets sprayed and blown by the fog sprayer were evaporated within 2 m radius. The result from the cooling test that two sprayers set up in glass greenhouse of plane area $228m^2$ was represented lower cooling effect that the temperature and relative humidity of inside air of greenhouse were $28.8^{\circ}C$ and 87.5% when those of outside air of greenhouse were $30.2^{\circ}C$ and 81.2%. Through investigation of literatures and results of the cooling test, it was estimated that the water spraying rate of evaporative cooling of single span greenhouse with 50% light curtain and with air change rate of 1 volume/min was $10m{\ell}/min/m^2$ so that the inside air temperature may cool down $2{\sim}3^{\circ}C$ on the basis of $35^{\circ}C$ atmospheric temperature in summer of south korean area.
