  • This study examined the nurse's emotional exhaustion and influencing factors, and the relationship between emotional burnout and hospital nursing workload using multilevel logistic regression analysis. The study subjects were 3,083 nurses of 65 hospitals, who participated in the training conducted by the Healthcare Industry Trade Union in 2010 and responded to the questionnaire. First, 71.6% of nurses experienced emotional exhaustion, and the average score of emotional exhaustion was 33.53. Second, the 'non - nursing work experience' showed a significant effect on emotional exhaustion. Third, the 'sufficient nursing staff' variable increased the emotional exhaustion. Fourth, the nursing grades were correlated significantly with emotional exhaustion compared to those with more than four beds per nurse. Fifth, in the case of working in the internal ward, the shorter the clinical career, the higher the emotional exhaustion. In other words, higher emotional exhaustion was associated with more nursing work experience, more perceived insufficient nursing staff, more nurses per bed, the department of internal medicine, and a shorter clinical career.

  • This study was conducted to develop a model that explains the factors influencing the clinical nurses' willingness to perform Basic Life Support and to verify the appropriateness of the model. The participants were 550 clinical nurses working at a university hospital in Korea. The data were collected from self-reported questionnaires from October 2012 to February 2013. A total of 520 questionnaires were analyzed using the SPSS/WIN 20.0 and Amos version 18.0 software packages. The results indicated that the clinical nurses' knowledge of basic life support had a direct impact and their clinical experience had an indirect impact on their willingness to perform basic life support at the scene. These variables together explained 19.5% of the variance in the nurses' willingness to perform Basic Life Support. The clinical experience was correlated significantly with knowledge (r=.61, p<.001). To increase the clinical nurses' performance of Basic Life Support, knowledge and clinical experience should be reinforced by continuous in-service education on Basic Life Support, considering the disease status of hospitalized patients.

  • This study was aimed to identify the effects of social intelligence and burnout on the turnover intention in nurses as a descriptive study. The data were collected between August 3 and September 1, 2015. A total of 188 nurses working at university medical centers and general hospitals located at J city and D city were participated. The collected data were analyzed using frequency, mean and standard deviation, t-test, ANOVAs, Pearson's correlation coefficients and hierarchical regression analysis. In turnover intention, there were significant differences in education, age, job preference of nurse, work period and position. Burnout showed significant effect in social intelligence and turnover intention. Social intlligence did not have control effect between turnover intention and job burnout. This findings suggested that to prevent the nurse's turnover intention, the education for social information, social skill and social awareness has to be programmed for the development of social intelligence.

  • The purpose of the study was to explore nurse image, major satisfaction, and professional self-concept and to identify the effects of these factors on professional self-concept of nursing students. A total of 132 nursing students who were attending A university were surveyed. Questionnaires were given to nursing students, and data were collected between 1 June 2017 and 30 June 2017. As a result, the factors, in terms of general characteristics, influencing professional self-concept were economic level (F=4.94, p=.009), reason for major selection (F=3.13, p=.011), and past grades (F=4.27, p=.016). The professional self-concept was correlated with nurse image (r=.22, p<.012) and major satisfaction (r=.20, p<.019). Regression analysis showed that nurse image and major satisfaction were statistically significant in predicting professional self-concept. Therefore, elevation of nursing students' professional self-concept will have a positive effect on nurse image and major satisfaction before and after clinical practice.

The subjects were nurses working at one tertiary hospital in Seoul and two general hospitals in Gyeonggi province. The data were collected from October 15 to November 5, 2021. A total of 130 nurses participated in the online survey. The collected data were analyzed by performing stepwise multiple linear regression using SPSS/Win 27.0. As a result, the factors affecting the interpersonal caring behavior of clinical nurses were caring character (β=.50, p<.001), age (β=-.24, p=.002), and job satisfaction (β=.16, p=.040), and they explained 36.0% of caring behavior (F=24.49, p<.001). Therefore, it is necessary to improve caring character and job satisfaction to enhance the interpersonal caring behavior of clinical nurses. More efforts of the hospital should be made to provide caring character building education and to increase job satisfaction of clinical nurses.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the components of the adaptation experiences and factors that help male nurses adapt to clinical nursing settings. The participants were eight male nurses working at general hospitals. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed using Giorgi's phenomenological analysis methods. The core components of the adaptation experiences of the participants in clinical nursing settings were summarized as 'dedication to work', 'challenges in reality that are different from expectations', 'establishing a professional identity', and 'self-development for the future'. The relationships between these components showed causative, accelerative, and recursive characteristics. The adaptation process was structured in the temporal context. In order for male nurses to adapt well to clinical nursing settings, policy efforts should be made to improve their working conditions and resolve inequalities, such as granting equal opportunities for promotion regardless of sex. In addition, it is essential for male nurses to have sufficient internal control for them to make self-directed efforts to strengthen their willpower and self-development efforts to facilitate their adaptation. This study suggests that developing suitable strategies and policy efforts based on the results is required to assist male nurses in adapting to clinical nursing settings.
