  • The primary goal of this study is to investigate the effects of individual's subjective social status on meaning of work. We hypothesized that individual's subjective social status, defined as the respect and influence an individual has at her/his workplace, would promote meaning of work. Further, we hypothesized that individual's subjective social status would be more highly associated with meaning of work based on her/his occupation's subjective social status. Using two experimental studies, we found that individual's subjective social status increased meaning of work in American (Experiment 1) and South Korean working adults (Experiment 2). Participant's meaning of work was more influenced by individual subjective social status than occupation subjective social status (Experiment 1). Also, the results from Experiment 2 indicated that objective social status within an organization (i.e., rank) moderated the effects of individual subjective social status on meaning of work, such that the beneficial effects of individual subjective social status on meaning of work were found only for participants with low objective social status. In contrast, meaning of work in participants with high objective social status did not vary depending on subjective social status. We discussed the implications of these results, study limitations, and directions for future research.

The significant factors influencing the job embeddedness were meaning of work (${\beta}=.57$, p<.001) and job stress (${\beta}=-.19$, p=.008); these factors explained 51.2% of the variance. Based on these findings, nursing college need to develop a curriculum to foster meaning of work and calling in clinical practice courses and to remain nurses.

  • This study conducted an e-mail survey of office workers working in large companies in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do to verify the structural relationship between meaning in work, work-life balance, life satisfaction, and depression. The study participants were 329 male and 176 female workers, and a total of 505 ($\bar{M}=38.0$ yrs, $\bar{SD}=8.1$ yrs), and the measurement tools used the Korean version of work meaning scale, work-life balance scale, Korean version of life satisfaction scale, and shortened CES-D. After establishing a research model on the structural relationship between major variables, the measurement model and structural model were verified using the collected data, and the applicability of the model was reviewed through comparison according to group classification by gender and age group. As a result of the analysis, it was found that the work-life balance had a partial mediating effect on the effect of the meaning in work on the life satisfaction and depression of office workers. As a result of analyzing the multi-group structural model by age group, the mediating effect of work-life balance did not differ by age in the effect of meaning in work on life satisfaction, but the mediating effect of work-life balance on meaning in work on depression was different by age. These results suggest that the emphasis needs to vary depending on the target group in the practice of individual and group coaching and counseling.

  • Though research has shown that public transportation drivers experience greater burnout than other drivers, the sources of their burnout and possible mediators remain largely unknown. In response, in this study we investigate the relationships among sensation seeking, Type A driving behavior, and meaning of work to elucidate the burnout experienced by bus drivers in Gyeonggi-do, South Korea. To collect data regarding these relationships, 188 bus drivers answered a questionnaire involving the sensation seeking scale, burnout scale, and meaning of work scale. Results showed that Type A driving behavior mediated the relationship between sensation seeking and burnout, while meaning of work moderated the mediated model. These findings demonstrate that sensation-seeking bus drivers tend to experience greater burnout given their tendency to exhibit Type A driving behavior, and this relationship depends on perceived meaning of work. This study therefore contributes meaningful information and outlines significant implications in understanding drivers' burnout.
