  • The purpose of this study was to investigate activity participation level and functional disability based on ICF for the elderly aged over 65 years. Subjects were 100 senior citizens. We performed data collection using Korean Activity Card Sorting(KACS) and World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule 2.0(WHODAS 2.0). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation, multiple regression. As a result of the survey of activity participation levels, retained level of activity participation of instrumental activity was highest at 75.06%. Among the WHODAS 2.0 sub-domain, 'getting along with people', 'participation in society' had the most difficulties and 'self-care', 'life activities' were the lowest. An analysis of the correlation between the activity retention rate and functional disability showed that there was a significant negative correlation. Significant factors influencing functional disability were activity participation level of social activity, instrumental activity and main work(retirement). We confirmed that activity participation level was important factor on functional disability. Further, we need standardization study for generalization.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of regular physical activity program on young children's basic motor skills and daily stress. The outdoor physical activity program was conducted with 40 participants who were divided into two groups(experimental group and control group) for 10 weeks twice a week. Results of the study were as following. The outdoor physical activity program improved young children's basic motor skills in the experiment group compared to the control group. Also it had positive effects on the reduction of daily stress in the experimental group compared to the control group. This result suggests that the physical activity program have positive effects on the development of young children's basic motor skills and the reduction of daily stress.

  • Objective : The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of bimanual intensive training on Upper Extremity Function and activities of daily living in stroke patients. Methods : The subjects were 18 patients who were diagnosed with hemiplegic stroke. They were randomly assigned to bimanual intensive training group (n=9) and unilateral intensive group (n=9). Bimanual training group performed bimanual task and unilateral training group performed one hand task for 1 hour per session, 5 times a week, for 4 weeks. Chi-square test, Wilcoxon signed rank test, and Mann-Whitney U test were used for analysis. Results : The results showed that, upper extremity motor function and bimanual coordination were significantly improved in patients in the bimanual training group (p<.05). Additionally, the ratio of affected hand use and amount of use/quality of movement in the hemiplegic upper extremity in activities of daily living for patients in the bimanual training group were significantly improved (p<.05). Although the unilateral group improved motor upper extremity function and activities of daily living in the upper extremity (p<.05), it was not significantly different from that in the bimanual training group. In between-group comparison, bimanual coordination and ratio of the affected hand use in a day were significantly different (p<.05). Conclusion : It is reasonable to conclude that bimanual intensive training therapy is an effective intervention method to improve upper extremity motor function, and activities of daily living in stroke patients.

  • Purpose: The purposes of this study were to compare the motivation for health behavior, health behaviors practices, and ADL of institutionalized elderly women with those of non-institutionalized elderly women. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive survey was conducted in convenience samples of 144 aged women(80 institutionalized and 64 non-institutionalized) using structured questionnaires. Descriptive statistics, $x^2$-test, and ANCOVA were used for data analysis with SPSS program. Results: The institutionalized elderly reported significantly higher motivation than the non-institutionalized elderly. In subcategories of motivation, self-efficacy of the institutionalized elderly was significantly lower than that of the non-institutionalized elderly. The non-institutionalized elderly reported significantly lower perceived benefits and significantly higher perceived barriers than institutionalized elderly. The institutionalized elderly reported significantly lower health behaviors in exercise and nutrition than the non-institutionalized elderly. Among health behaviors of the non-institutionalized elderly women, stress management marked the lowest score. Conclusion: To enhance motivation of institutionalized elderly women, interventions for building self-efficacy are needed. To promote the health behavior of the non-institutionalized elderly, stress management programs are needed. All elderly women need exercise.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of biofeedback exercise training on muscle activity and activities of daily livings (ADL) in hemiplegic patients. An experimental group consisting of 17 people, was given biofeedback exercise training for 30- 60 minutes per week for 5 weeks, while a control group consisting of 18 people, was given normal exercise with quasi-experimental design. Result: The results of the study show that biofeedback exercise is effective for improving muscle activity in hemiplegic patients, especially in the hemiplegic limbs. However, this study found no significant differences in ADL and IADL between the experimental and the control groups. It implies that ADL and IADL may not be improved for a short period of time, such as 5 weeks, for people with more than five years of hemiplegia. The study suggests that the effect of biofeedback exercise on ADL and IADL should be determined in hemiplegic patients in acute stage.

Method: A quasi-experimental pretest and posttest study was used. The subjects consisted of 33 adults who were stroke in the G hospital, and the period of data collection was from February 8, 2006 to August 30, 2006. Seventeen patients were assigned to experimental group and sixteen to the control group. The subjects of the experimental group performed an exercise for 15-20 minutes twice a day, 3-5 times per week, during six weeks. Outcome variables were functional status, activity of daily living and social re-adjustment. Chi-Square test and T-test were used to examine the equality of the subjects and ANCOVA used to examine the group difference using SAS. Results: There ware significant differences in functional status, activity of daily living, and social re-adjustment(social function, depression) between the two groups. Conclusion: The above results state the exercise can be an effective intervention to improve the functional status, activity of daily living, and social re-adjustment(social function, depression) of stroke patients.

  • Purpose: This study analyzed the effects of meridian massage on the muscle power, ROM, and ADL in persons with cerebral palsy. Method: A non-equivalent pre-test/post-test design was used. The data were collected from August to October, 2000 from 10 persons with cerebral palsy (a control group of 5 and an experimental group of 5). Muscle power was evaluated with the Brunnstrom-Dennen gravity test, ROM with a goniometer, and ADL with a self developed ADL scale. T-test, repeated measure ANOVA were used for statistical analysis. Result: The results are; 1. For muscle power, both time series group difference (F=10.66, p=0.000) and the total period group difference (F=72.67, p=0.000) were significant between the two groups. 2. ROM was not significantly different between the two groups. 3. For ADL, both time series group difference (F=7.09, p=0.001) and total period group difference (F=35.99, p=0.000) were significant between the two groups. Conclusion: Overall, this study shows that Meridian massage is effective for muscle power, ROM, and ADL in persons with cerebral palsy person. So it can be used to develope effective nursing programs to improve the function of motion of persons with cerebral palsy.

  • Recently, the population of the elderly in Korea has been rapidly increasing, and the medical problems related to the increase of the elderly population and the cognitive decline of the elderly are becoming big social issues. In this study, a task analysis is conducted to develop a cognitive rehabilitation program aimed at improving the IADL(instrumental activities of daily living) of the cognitively deprived elderly. Especially, we focused on analyzing financial management task with ATM use. The task analysis scenario developed through this study is the basis for the development of educational programs to improve the IADL of the cognitively deprived elderly.
