(Evans and Durant, 1995; Gregory and Miller, 1998; Gross and Levitt, 1994; Holton, 1993; Theocharis and Psimopoulos, 1987), 반면 사회학자들과 시민단체들은 주로 과학기술의 전개방향에 영향을 미치는 과학기술정책 결정과정에 대한 시민참여의 일환으로 과학 (특히 사회적으로 논란이 되는 과학적 연구와 그것의 기술적 적용)에 대한 일반시민들의 태도에 관심을 기울여왔다 (이영희, 2000; Freudenburg and Pastor, 1992;Miller, 1983; Wynne, 1991, 1992; Zimman, 1991).1) (중략)

  • This paper aims to uncover and discuss characteristics of citizen participatory transdisciplinary research which has been gaining momentum in recent years in the form of social-problem solving R&D program and sustainability science research. Two key questions are examined. One is related to the mechanism of cooperation in knowledge production among participants, namely scientists and citizens(extra-academics), while the other is examining whether the output of participatory research activity is more than journals or patents. Diverse strands of literature on knowledge and knowledge production including Mode 2, Learning modes and the notion of co-production of knowledge and social order are drawn and critically reviewed to elucidate the characteristics of citizen participatory transdisciplinary research.

  • This study investigated the public opinion on the use and conservation management of national park, to manage the growing demand of national park visit and to support the policy direction of national park. So far, various surveys and big data analysis on the use and perception of national park have been conducted, but there have been limitations such as lack of survey questions on issues in park management and use. In addition, the object of the previous studies were limited to the national park visitors; therefore, this study expanded the object of survey from national park visitors to ordinary citizens. Unlike previous studies conducted only on national park visitors, ordinary citizens relatively prefered bottom areas rather than high-altitude ones. A policy to limit the visit to high-ridge area of mountain is being currently driven; however, the survey results of ordinary citizens suggested to maintain current policies or to increase visitor reservations system within narrow limits. On the other hand, the proportion of citizens who have used the visitor-reservation system was very small. We discuss the difference between national park visitors and ordinary citizens and the policy conditions according to changes in park management principles and public attitudes toward national parks.

  • World Wide Views (WWViews) on Climate and Energy was an experiment of public deliberation which was held in 77 countries with over 10,000 global citizens on June 6, 2015. The coordinator of this project (the Danish Board of Technology with Missions Publiques and the French National Commission for Public Debate) developed the overal procedure, and local partners implemented the actual events in each country on the same day. The coordinator gathered the results of the events from all local sites in order to submit them as global citizens' voice to the COP21 negotiations at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Paris. This study examines the extent to which such new method of WWViews, standardized at global level to be implemented in different local contexts, achieves its quality of public deliberation (representativeness, transparency, impartial inclusion, deliberativeness, influence) by evaluating the Korean WWViews held in Seoul.

  • This study aims to investigate the aspect of volunteering and donation of highschool students in Seongnam city and further the relationship between volunteering and democratic civic consciousness. To that end, 155 students from an ordinary highschool and a foreign language highschool participated in a survey. The result showed that female students' participation rates of volunteering and monetary donations were higher than male students' but there was no difference in the participation rates between the schools. The civic consciousness level was not affected by the gender, but was affected by the schools. The scores for the attitude of democracy were better than those for the value and the participation of democracy. In particular, the students from the foreign language highschool had higher scores for the participation of democracy relative to the students from the highschool. As for the relationship between volunteering and democratic civic consciousness, there was a significant difference in civic consciousness scores between students who had participated in volunteering and those who had not, only in the case of the students from the ordinary highschool. Additionally, it was revealed volunteering and donating were compensatory behavior. Although single factors in volunteering influencing the civic consciousness were not found, persistence was important.
