  • The radical changes in the business environment have motivated firms to exert serious efforts in managing sustainable development. This study identified the effects of sustainable development on the perceived performance of firms from the viewpoint of the balanced scorecard. Independent variables include economic efforts (of efficiency and ethic of accounting and fairness), environmental efforts (management and energy control), and social efforts (consumer protection and contribution for local community). The result from the analysis of data collected in this research suggests that sustainable development efforts are the critical sources of the incorporated performance of firms. The consumer protection efforts of the local community determine the competitiveness of a firm in managing social responsibility and creating value and social activities. Efforts to reconsider efficiency determine the competitiveness of a firm, becoming the critical factors that determine sustainable performance. Energy control facilitates value creation for the environment through cooperation and harmonization with nature, resulting in sustainable business performances through the vitalization of practical establishments and operations. Sustainable management needs to meet international standards, cooperation, and harmony. These standards are based on the economic, environmental, and social efforts that enable firms to adopt sustainable management efforts that are suitable for their own systems.

  • In major wars of the 21st century, drones are expanding beyond surveillance and reconnaissance to include land and air as well as sea and underwater for purposes such as precision strikes, suicide attacks, and cognitive warfare. These drones will perform multi-domain operations, and to this end, they will continue to develop by improving the level of autonomy and strengthening scalability based on the High-Low Mix concept. Recently, drones have been used as a major means in major wars around the world, and there seems to be a good chance that they will evolve into game changers in the future. North Korea has also been making significant efforts to operate reconnaissance and attack drones for a long time. North Korea has recently continued to engage in provocations using drones, and its capabilities are gradually becoming more sophisticated. In addition, with the recent emergence of new strategic Drones, wartime and peacetime threats such as North Korea's use of these to secure surveillance, reconnaissance and early warning capabilities against South Korea and new types of provocations are expected to be strengthened. Through this study, we hope to provide implications by analyzing the capabilities of North Korea's strategic Drones, predicting their operation patterns, and conducting active follow-up research on the establishment of a comprehensive strategy, such as our military's drone deployment and counter-drone system solutions.

  • Hereditary tyrosinemia type 1 (HT-1) is a metabolic disorder caused by biallelic pathogenic variants in the fumarylacetoacetate hydrolase (FAH) gene, which impairs the function of the FAH enzyme, resulting in the accumulation of tyrosine's toxic metabolites in hepatocytes and renal tubular cells. As a consequence, individuals with HT-1 exhibit symptomatic manifestations. Rapid diagnosis and treatment of HT-1 can prevent short-term death and long-term complications. A 15-day-old boy presented to the outpatient department with elevated levels of tyrosine on his newborn screening tests conducted at the age of 3 and 10 days, respectively. Further blood tests revealed increased levels of alpha-fetoprotein and amino acids including tyrosine and threonine. Urine organic acid tests indicated a significant elevation in tyrosine metabolites, as well as the presence of succinylacetone (SA), which led to the diagnosis of HT-1. Two pathogenic and likely pathogenic variants of FAH compatible with HT-1 were also detected. He began a tyrosine-restricted diet at one month old and received nitisinone (NTBC) at two months old. With continued treatment, the patient's initially elevated AFP level, detection of SA in the urine, and mild hepatomegaly showed improvement. During four years and seven months of treatment, there were no exceptional complications apart from an increase in tyrosine levels and a delay in speech. We report a case of tyrosinemia type 1 detected through newborn screening, treated with dietary restriction and NTBC, with a good prognosis.

  • This study aims to distinguish between utilitarian walking and leisure walking activities and analyze the correlation between these types of walking and the walking environment. To measure the walking environment, we utilized Google Street View (GSV) and employed semantic segmentation deep learning techniques to quantitatively assess urban walking environment elements as perceived by pedestrians. A survey was conducted to measure utilitarian walking, leisure walking, and perceived walking environment satisfaction, collecting valid responses from 192 participants. Using the survey data, we visualized utilitarian walking, leisure walking, and perceived walking environment satisfaction, and analyzed the correlation between these variables and the walkability scores. The results indicated that leisure walking had a significant positive correlation with walkability (Pearson's r = 0.121, p-value = 0.012), while there was no significant correlation between utilitarian walking and walkability (Pearson's r = 0.093, p-value = 0.055). These findings suggest that people prioritize mobility efficiency over the walking environment for utilitarian walking, whereas the quality of the walking environment significantly influences the frequency of leisure walking. Based on these results, the study proposes specific strategies to improve the walking environment around residential areas to promote leisure walking. These strategies include creating vertical gardens or various forms of three-dimensional gardens on narrow walkways and improving sidewalk design. The findings of this study can contribute to promoting leisure walking by creating walk-friendly environments, ultimately enhancing urban sustainability and the quality of life for residents.

  • In this study, the pre-service elementary teachers' characteristics of pedagogical design using science teacher's guides were analyzed. Eleven pre-service teachers at the University of Education in Korea participated in the study. They were provided with three types of teacher's guides and were asked to use them to design a science lesson. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to obtain specific information on how the guides were implemented. The analysis of the results revealed that they primarily used the guides to classify the learning content for each lesson and establish connections between the content of the particular lessons through the unit learning system. The teacher's guides mainly featured knowledge-based learning objectives, and most pre-service teachers accepted them without considering the attitudinal aspects. In the process of designing the assessments, the teaching goals written down by the pre-service teachers were used as the main source. Teaching and learning activities were supplemented by evaluating the activities presented in the teacher's guides based on the students' cognitive level and misconceptions. In terms of teaching methods, the teacher's guides were evaluated and reorganized to develop teaching-learning models and to construct introductory activities that cater to students' interests and motivations. Based on the results, we discussed the utilization of the guides to enhance their pedagogical design capacity and suggested directions to improve them.

  • In this study, three secondary science teachers' questioning considering the context of discourse were investigated, and the factors influencing their questioning were explored. The questions were categorized into questions that elicit students' opinions or probe their thinking, questions in response to student utterances, questions for classroom management, and rhetorical questions. The results showed that questions related to scientific concepts were classified differently depending on the teachers' intent. Only one teacher frequently used questions that related to students' everyday life experiences. Two teachers, when using "questions asking for students' thoughts," mostly led students to give short or limited option answers. These teachers primarily considered the interactive aspect of questioning but did not account for the cognitive aspect. Teachers often used "questions utilizing student utterances" when students provided answers aligned with scientific concepts. Teachers also used "questions that simply repeated student utterances" with varying intonation to indicate whether the students' responses were correct or incorrect. "Affective questions" were rarely used by the teachers. One teacher did not use "management questions" to check students' understanding or progress, failing to confirm students' comprehension. Characteristics of students, the teachers' teaching and learning beliefs, knowledge about questioning, and subject matter knowledge collectively influenced the teachers' questioning strategies. Based on the results, practical implications for improving science teachers' questioning skills were discussed.

  • An understanding of the influence of emotional context on memory retrieval is crucial to our comprehensive understanding of human cognition. While previous research focused primarily on visual stimuli to address this relationship, this study ventures into the realm of speech-based emotional contexts. Building on previous findings, we examine the effects of arousal and the valence of verbal contexts on memory, with particular focus on mitigating the serial position effect. In Study 1, we investigated how the arousal level of verbal context in the middle of a word list affects memory retention. Our results demonstrated detriment to the memory of later parts of the word list when exposed to low-arousal contexts. In Study 2, we controlled for arousal levels and examined the impact of valence on memory. We found that negative verbal contexts impair the memory of the word when presented together. Our findings suggest that speech-based emotional contexts do not facilitate verbal memory processing. In particular, negative emotional contexts were found to reinforce the serial position effect. Negative emotional contexts tend to disrupt task performance and fail to elicit memory-enhancing effects, especially when both the context and memory stimulus are verbal. These insights offer a valuable contribution to our understanding of the nuances of auditorily delivered emotional context in verbal memory processes.
