  • This study was aimed to investigate the tensile behaviors of PE(Polyethylene) fiber-reinforced highly ductile cementitious composites with different combinations of micro silica sand and normal sand(river sand) with maximum particle size of 4.75 mm. Flow test result indicated the increase of flowability with higher replacement ratio of river sand. There was no noticeable difference in the mean compressive strength with different replacement ratio of river sand, but the variation in the compressive strength increased as higher amount of river sand was adopted for the replacement. The difference in the uniaxial tensile strength was negligible, but the tensile strain capacity was significantly influenced by the replacement ratio of river sand. It is thought that increased density of multiple cracks induced improved tensile strain capacity when higher percentage of river sand was adopted for fine aggregate. The deviation in the strain capacity increased as the replacement ratio of river sand was higher, as in the compressive strength. This study presented the feasibility of using normal sand instead of micro silica sand for highly ductile cementitious composites with equivalent or better uniaxial tensile performance, even though it might increase the deviation in the performance.

  • Laminated rubber bearing is the most commonly used device for seismic base isolation of bridge structures. It is important to know performance and behavior characteristics of the laminated rubber bearings. The main evaluation factors of the rubber bearing are classified as compressive, shear and tensile behavior characteristics. The reference data of compressive and shear characteristics are rich, but the reference data of tensile characteristics is scarce. In this study, tensile test results of the rubber bearing with variation of shape factor and shear deformation are investigated for mechanical property. When tensile deformation in normal condition is increasing, tensile cycle behavior curve becomes non-linear and tensile breaking point is 300%. On the other hand, tensile breaking point is shear deformation condition is about 40%. Furthermore, when shape factor is lower, tensile breaking point is decrease. This results mean that tensile breaking point is decreased in triaxial tensile deformation because of cracks caused by internal void of the rubber bearings. This experimental data can be used as the reference data of tensile characteristics for designing seismic isolation of structures.

  • Tensile softening characteristics play an important role in the structural behavior of steel fiber-reinforced ultra high performance concrete. Tension softening modeling and numerical analysis method are necessary for the prediction of structural performance of steel fiber-reinforced concrete. The numerical method to predict the flexural behavior is proposed in this study. Tension softening modeling is carried out by using crack equation based on fictitious crack and inverse analysis in which load-crack opening displacement relationship is considered. Thereafter material modeling is performed considering tension softening. The comparison of moment-curvature curves of the numerical analysis results with the test results indicates a reasonable agreement. Therefore, the present numerical results prove that good prediction of flexural behavior of steel fiber-reinforced ultra high performance concrete beams can be achieved by employing the proposed method.

  • Recently, radiation shielding sheets made of eco-friendly materials have been widely used in medical institutions. The shielding sheet is processed into a solid form by thermoforming by mixing a shielding material with a polymer material. The base is resin-based and has a limit in tensile strength, and for this purpose, fibers such as non-woven fabrics are used on the surface. The shielding sheet process technology has a problem in that the tensile strength rapidly decreases when the content of the shielding material is increased to increase the shielding performance. In order to improve this, this study intends to compare and evaluate the method of laminating and coating the fibers in the sheet process. In comparison of the three types of sheets, there was no difference in shielding performance between the fiber-coated sheet and the compression sheet, but there was a large difference in tensile strength.

  • This paper presents the tensile behavior of the stud connection between reinforced concrete(RC) and steel members. Hanger reinforcements are placed around the studs to transfer the tensile and flexural loads to the opposite side of the concrete member. Eight specimens for the tensile tests are tested with variables, which are the arrangement details of hanger reinforcements, the reinforcing bars, and the embedment length of stud. The results of the tensile tests show that hanger reinforcements are effective to increase tensile strength for stud connections. Hangers and reinforcing bars near stud bolts contributed to the reduction of brittle failure. From the evaluation on the tensile strength by previous design guidelines, it was shown that CCD (Concrete Capacity Design) method was more suitable for estimation of test strength.

  • The prestressing steel wire, which is applied a tension to reinforce the structure, is applied flexure simultaneously by the duct and the deviator. In order to evaluate the deflected tensile performance of the prestressing steel wire subjected to both tensile and flexural stresses, the numerical analysis for 600 cases with variables of wire diameters, mandrel diameters, and friction coefficient between mandrel and steel wire was performed. As the result of analysis, the larger the diameter of the steel wire was, the lower the deflected tensile performance was, and the effect decreased with the increase of the wire elongation. The effect of mandrel diameter and friction coefficient between mandrel and wire on the deflected tensile performance of the wire was very small. But the deflected tensile performance and the friction coefficient between mandrel and strand showed a relatively high correlation. Therefore, it is necessary to make enough large elongation to secure the deflected tensile performance. If there is a restriction on the elongation, it is necessary to reduce the diameter of the steel wire to an appropriate value, and to increase the friction between steel wires by adjusting the surface condition of the steel wire.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate experimentally the effect of polyethylene fibers with different tensile strength and aspect ratio on the properties of cementless composite. Three types of mixtures according to the types of polyethylene fibers and water-to-binder ratio were prepared and density, compressive strength and tension tests were performed. Test results showed that the mixture reinforced by polyethylene fiber with a low tensile strength by 10 % and a high aspect ratio by 8.3 % had a high tensile strain capacity by 11.7 %, a high toughness by 12.4 %, and a low crack width by 9.1 %. It was also observed that high tensile strain capacity and better cracking pattern could be achieved by increasing the water-to-binder ratio of composite although its strength is low.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the compressive and tensile properties of high volume slag cement-based fiber-reinforced composite incorporating phase change material. Four mixtures were determined according to calcium hydroxide and expansive admixture, and the compressive strength and tension tests were performed. Test results showed that four mixtures showed a compressive strength over 51MPa and a tensile ductility over 3.2%. It was observed that calcium hydroxide and expansive admixture influenced the compressive and tensile performance, and the strength, ductility, and cracking patterns of composite could be improved by including proper amount of calcium hydroxide and expansive admixture.
