  • Through-the-thickness properties of thick-walled cylindrical composites are required to determine structural performances because interlaminar tensile stress is primarily responsible for structural failure of the composites during their curing process. It is necessary for evaluating the tensile properties to find individual test methods to find appropriate methods because there are no recognised international standards(test methods and test specifications) available for generating reliable tensile properties in the direction. This paper has performed an experimental study to measure that properties of carbon fabric/phenolic composites which are produced by domestic company. Several test methods using an aluminum specimen were compared and evaluated. The best test method to measure transverse through-the-thickness properties of composite materials was developed by the experimental results that strain trends on all faces of composite specimen are the same.

  • In this article, the effects of shear mixing on the dispersion improvement of the carbon nanotube fillers in epoxy composites were studied. Through the scanning electron microscope images showing the quantitative results and the tensile tests giving the qualitative data, we can see the dispersion improvement of the fillers. The composite specimen containing 0.6 wt% fillers shows the biggest value of tensile strength. For the tensile stiffness, the specimens containing more filler have the larger values of tensile stiffness.

  • In this study, the effects of residual stress induced by plastic injection molding process on the tensile behavior of plastic tensile test specimen were investigated. To manufacture plastic tensile test specimens, an injection mold based on the international standard system was designed and made. Cavity pressure and temperature sensors were installed inside of the presented mold to monitor pressure and temperature values during the cycle of injection molding. Injection molding simulation was performed with the same condition of experiment and linear structural tensile analysis was also performed with the initial condition of the residual stress. It was shown that the residual stress induced by injection molding has an effect on the experiment of tensile test and linear structural tensile simulation.

  • Tensile and compressive strength tests were conducted to investigate the mechanical characteristics of aluminized paraffin wax fuel for hybrid gas generator applications. Mixtures of 0 wt%, 10 wt% and 30 wt% nano aluminum paraffin coupons as well as 5 wt%, 10 wt% and 15 wt% micro aluminum paraffin coupons were used. The average particle size of 100nm and of $8{\mu}m$ mixed each with microcrystalline paraffin wax(Sasol 0907) were chosen for the base specimens where the tensile strength test followed the ASTM-D638 specimen standard while the compressive strength test followed the ASTM D575-91. It was found that nano based specimens increased both the tensile and compressive strength enhancing the mechanical behavior of paraffin wax whereas the micro based specimens gave still less influential effect.

  • This study has been carried out to understand the fracture characteristics of the tension wood of Quercus mongolica under the shear and bending stress. Macroscopically, the wood fluff in the shear surface appeared more frequently in tension wood than sound wood, and more coarse wood fluffs were observed in 30% than 10% moistured shear surface. In the fractured tension wood from bending stress, more thick and long wood fiber appeared than sound wood. The observation using scanning electron microscope indicated that both sound and tension wood samples from radial shear surface showed the intrawall dominated failure and the fracture surface of the ray parenchyma cell showed the transwall dominated failure. In tangential shear surface, wood fiber surface showed the intrawall failure and short and coarse wood fiber was observed in tension wood. Ray parenchyma cell of sound and tension wood samples showed the transwall failure. The surfaces of tension wood’s ray parenchyma cell were relatively clean. The fractured tension wood from bending stress showed unsharp and flat wood fiber compared with sound wood.

  • This study conducted tensile tests on an Alloy 690TT tube at room temperature (RT) and at $343^{\circ}C$ using tube- and ring-type specimens to investigate the stress-strain behavior and tensile properties of a steam generator (SG) tube in the axial and circumferential directions at RT and at the design temperature of a nuclear power plant (NPP). The results of the axial tensile test showed that yield point phenomena appeared at both RT and $343^{\circ}C$, and serrated flow in the stress-strain curve appeared at $343^{\circ}C$. Yield and tensile strengths for both directions were clearly lower at $343^{\circ}C$ compared to RT; however, the elongations were approximately the same at both test temperatures. Regardless of the test temperature, the strengths in the circumferential direction were lower by approximately 5~10 % than those in the axial direction. In addition, the test data revealed that the reduction in the yield and tensile strengths of the Alloy 690TT SG tube with the test temperature was more significant than that estimated by the temperature correction factor of ASME Sec.II.

  • In this study, characteristics of effect on hydrogen gas was investigated to hydrogen embrittlement by disk and tensile tests. The developed and commercial alloy was fabricated to a plate material made from an alloy ingot. The prepared materials were processed in the form of a disk to measure rupture pressure by hydrogen and helium gas at a rate of 0.1 to 1,000 bar/min. In the hydrogen pre-charged tensile test, a specimen was hydrogenated using an anode charging method, and the yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, elongation, and reduction in area rate were carried by a strain rate test. Also, the microstructure was observed to the fracture surface of the tensile test specimen. As a result, the developed materials satisfied endurable hydrogen embrittlement, and the fractured surface showed a brittleness fracture surface with a depth of several ㎛, but dimple due to ductile fracture could be observed.

  • The transfer of forces across the interface by bond between concrete and steel is of fundamentul importance to many aspects of reinforced concrete behavior. Bond stress-slip relationships were studied using a symmetri¬cal tension test specimen. This type of test is intended to simulate conditions in the tension zone of a concrete beam between primary cracks and below the neutral axis. These relationships between local bond stress and local slip are found to be quite different at different locations along the bar. The bond behavior under cyclic lo¬ading is also studied in the present study, and the increase of bond slip and steel strains is clarified from those tests.
