The Influences of Cognitive Authority of Online Information Sources on Information Quality Evaluation (온라인 정보원의 인지적 권위에 대한 인식이 정보의 품질 평가에 미치는 영향)

  • Due to the fact that cognitive authority influences an individual's thoughts so that a given information is perceived as appropriate, people evaluate information based on their cognitive authority. The purpose of the present study is to examine the perception of the cognitive authority of online information sources used by college students to carry out their academic tasks, and to determine whether such perceptions affect the quality assessment of information sources, such as webpages, e-journals, and Wikipedia,. Specifically, we measured how cognitive authority, which were formed by the author, the surface, and the content of an information source influenced its accuracy, usefulness, completeness, and expertise. For this purpose, online surveys were conducted with college students, and 172 valid responses were obtained. Findings indicated that all the characteristics that formed the cognitive authority of an information source had significant impacts on its accuracy, usefulness, completeness, and expertise. The study suggests academic implications that confirm the associations between cognitive authority and credibility of information in the context of online information sources. Furthermore, the study provides practical implications that system developers or operators of information sources need to consider diverse factors that affect their cognitive authority to promote users' trust on the information that they deliver.

Elementary Students' Perceptions of Role and Epistemic Authority in the Activity about 'Making a Pet Poster' ('애완동물 안내문 만들기' 수업에서 나타나는 초등학생들의 역할 인식과 인식적 권위)

  • If we, as educators, want to put students at the center of learning in science classroom, we must let students express their voices and exercise authority. To do this, we developed a classroom activity about 'Making a pet poster', and then we explored how elementary school students perceived their roles and expressed their authority during this activity. Fourth grade students from an elementary school in the city of Seoul participated in the activity, which was videotaped and recorded. We found that students expressed their epistemic authority differently in small group activities and in whole group discussions. In small group activities, they desired to show their authority as "pet experts" by using and selecting various resources from their everyday lives and transforming those resources into suitable forms in public spaces. Meanwhile, in whole group discussions, participants were classified as either presenters or audience members to verify their authority in regard to the pet poster activity; presenters desired to achieve recognition as "pet experts," and audience members assessed the presenters as "testers." In addition, they expressed authority as teachers by leading the whole group discussions. Based on these findings, this paper suggests the implications for new educational strategies to foster a student-centered learning environment.

Differences in Obedience to Authority between Authoritarians and Non-authoritarians: in Three Authority-level Situations (권위주의적인 사람은 항상 권위에 복종적일까?: 권위주의 성격에 따른 권위관계 상황별 복종의 차이)

  • Existing studies show that authoritarians are obedient to the powerful even though they are coercive to the weak. However, the personal relationships are very diverse even in the range of the authority relations. The purpose of this study is to explain the differences in the obedience to authority between authoritarians and non-authoritarians in some situations which have different authority-levels. This study presumed that obedience to authority is affected by their own authoritarianism. For this study, four scenarios were used to provide subjects with the situations that are different in the strength of authority. And the results demonstrated that people behave differently according to the level of authority. The result showed that in the low-authority situation authoritarians tend to obey less to the authorities than non-authoritarians. This result is different from existing ones. It follows from what has been said that the loss of authority in Korea partially comes from the double standard of the authoritarians according to the strength of authority.

Mathematics Preservice Teachers' Conception of Teacher Discourse (예비 수학 교사의 교사 담화에 대한 인식 분석)

  • Teachers' conceptions about teaching are important driving and also interfering forces which might affect their actual practice and training. This research explores preservice mathematics teachers' conceptions of teacher discourse, through tasks analyzing and evaluating teachers' moment-to-moment discourse moves which occur in authoritative and dialogical classroom discourse. Some facets of the preservice teachers' conceptions were congruent with dialogical discourse: they criticized teacher's one-way communication and ignoring students' voices; they supported teacher's questions probing students' thinking and receptive attitude to ward students' wrong answers. However, some deep and subtle facets of their conceptions were more congruent with authoritative discourse rather than dialogical discourse: they positively perceived teacher's closed, information seeking questions that funnel students' thinking to the predetermined procedure; they emotionally resisted teacher's questions which might facilitate dialogical engagement by allowing students to judge mathematical correctness of ideas from their peers. Preservice teachers' conceptions of teacher discourse explored in this research provide useful foundations on which to build continuous and coherent teacher professional development programs about classroom discourse.

  • This study examines the increasing influence of the private sorter in global media governance, which represents decentralization of international politics resulted from the rapid globalization in the areas of politics, economy and culture. Introducing a concept of the private authority which theoretically explains increasing power of the private sector, including transnational corporations and business associations in global governance, this study discusses how the private sector and its governance activities ran be recognized as legitimate as those of the state. Based on this theoretical discussion, the study examines what the Increasing role and power of the private sector In global media governance imply with regard to democratic accountability.

The Relationship between Epistemic Beliefs and Creativity of Mathematics & Science Gifted Students (수학·과학 영재의 인식론적 신념과 창의적 사고와의 관계)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between epistemic beliefs and creativity of gifted students. To resolve the above research questions, this study used epistemic beliefs inventory and Torrance's TTCT to 87 1st grade gifted middle school students enrolled in Daegu metropolitan city. The results of this study are as follows. Firstly, sophistical epistemic beliefs of the gifted students were higher than their naive epistemic beliefs. Secondly, Pearson's correlation analysis showed significant relations between fixed ability and verbal creativity, and between provisional knowledge and verbal creativity, and showed significant relations between variables of sophistical epistemic beliefs and figural creativity. Lastly, this study revealed that fixed ability, expert authority and provisional knowledge explain considerable amount verbal creativity of the gifted students. And authority of the acceptance and provisional knowledge affect considerably their figural creativity.

Political Change in Thailand and the Philippines: Democratic Recession? Returning to Authoritarianism? (태국과 필리핀의 정치변동: 민주화의 후퇴? 재권위주의화?)

  • The purpose of this article is to verify whether recent political change in Thailand and the Philippines is temporarily shown "democratic recession" or "returning to authoritarianism". For the purpose this research establishes three propositions based on previous academic researches of political change. The is to verify characteristics of liberal democracy based on democratic procedures and institutions as well as civilian control over the military. The is to analyze the characteristics of authoritarianism such as the control over individual freedom and rights, concentration of power, and populist ruling behavior contrary to constitutionalism. The last one, , is to check either the coincidence or discrepancy between democratic institutions and popular understanding of democracy during democratic transitions. The finding through testing those propositions is that recent political change in two countries is more likely "returing to authoritarianism" rather than provisional "democratic recession". Implications of the finding has two aspects. One is that the only change in democratic procedures and institutions including the competition among political parties and peaceful change of governments are not enough to ensure a successful transition to liberal democracy. The other is that a half-democracy lacking the change of popular understanding and belief toward democracy as well as democratic practices cannot survive long enough. These are confirmed through this study on the cases of Thailand and the Philippines.

Exploring Small Group Argumentation Shown in Designing an Experiment: Focusing on Students' Epistemic Goals and Epistemic Considerations for Activities (실험 설계에서 나타난 소집단 논변활동 탐색: 활동에 대한 인식적 목표와 인식적 이해를 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study is to explore students' epistemic goals and considerations in designing an experiment task and to investigate how a shift in the students' epistemology affected their argumentation. Four 7th grade students were selected as a focus group. According to the results, when they designed their own experiment, their epistemic goal was 'scientific sense-making' and their epistemic considerations - the perception of the nature of the knowledge product was 'this experiment should explain how something happened', the perception of the justification was 'we need to use our interpretation of the data' and the perception of the audience was 'constructor' - contributed to designing their experiment actively. When students tried to select one argument, their epistemic goal shifted to 'winning a debate', showing 'my experiment is better than the others' with the perception of the audience, 'competitor'. Consequently, students only deprecated the limits of different experiment so that they did not explore the meaning of each experiment design deeply. Eventually, student A's experiment design was selected due to time restrictions. When they elaborated upon their result, their epistemic goal shifted to 'scientific sensemaking', reviewing 'how this experiment design is scientifically valid' through scientific justification - we need justification to make members accept it - acting as 'cooperator'. Consequently, all members engaged in a productive argumentation that led to the development of the group result. This study lays the foundation for future work on understanding students' epistemic goals and considerations to prompt productive argumentation in science classrooms.

Exploring Scientific Argumentation Practice from Unproductive to Productive: Focus on Epistemological Resources and Contexts (비생산적 논변에서 생산적 논변으로의 실행 변화 탐색 -인식론적 자원과 맥락을 중심으로-)

  • This study aims to identify what kind of epistemological resources were activated in unproductive and productive practice by students participating in scientific argumentation, and to explore which contexts result in changes in argumentative practice. We collected transcriptions of participants' argumentative lessons and interview, participants' work sheets, and researchers' field notes. The analysis revealed that the focus group activated different kinds of epistemological resources depending on their practice; propagated, belief, and accumulation in unproductive practice and constructed, understanding, accumulation, formation and rebuttal in productive practice. We found two contextual cues that led to these changes; unfamiliar form of argumentative task was provided and emotional, epistemic, and conceptual support of the epistemic authority. This work can be provided as additional case studies to analyze changes in practice according to learner context-dependent epistemology, and we expect to contribute to discussions of productive epistemology and stabilization for students' authentic science engagement.

The Effect of the Antecedents of Authenticity of Korean Product Brand on Brand Aura - Focus on Chinese Consumer - (한국 제품 브랜드 진정성 선행요인들이 브랜드 아우라에 미치는 영향 -중국소비자를 대상으로-)

  • Chinese consumers get more interests in the brands which show the consumers with th trust rather than the those which provide consumers with excessive information on brand. Accordingly, this study aimed to find out that the antecedents of brand authenticity such as brand consistency, continuity, individuality, authority, ethics affect the brand aura through brand authenticity and surveyed data from a total 400 Chinese consumers for the analysis. As a result, this article is summarized as followings. First, brand continuity, individuality, authority affected brand authenticity but brand consistency and ethics did not have a direct effect on brand authenticity. Second, brand authenticity had positive effect on brand aura. This study provides information on the antecedents of brand authenticity of Chinese consumers. Further, it will provide meaning suggestion point of the importance of brand authenticity in establishing of brand aura.
