  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the level of character, critical thinking disposition, professional self-concept, and adjustment to college life, as well as to identify the factors influencing the adjustment to college life in nursing students. The study was conducted on 166 nursing students in C and J Provinces, between May 25th and June 10th 2016. The data was analyzed using t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation, and multiple regression. The mean score of the adjustment to college life was 3.27 (${\pm}0.56$), character was 4.34 (${\pm}0.59$), critical thinking disposition was 3.48 (${\pm}0.40$), and professional self-concept was 2.76(${\pm}0.32$). There were positive correlations between adjustment to college life and character (r=.512, p<0.001), as well as between critical thinking disposition (r=.508, p<0.001) and professional self-concept (r=.614, p<0.001). The significant factors influencing the adjustment to college life were character, critical thinking disposition, and professional self-concept, which explained 43% of the variance in the adjustment to college life. Based on these findings, programs that develop character, critical thinking disposition, and professional self-concept are necessary for college nursing students in order to promote college adjustment.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of Argument-Based Inquiry (ABI) strategy on student's character competency. For this study, 51 grade 11 students (two classes) were selected to the role assignment (ABI-R group) and 46 students (two classes) were assigned to the non-role assignment group (ABI group). In the result, the role assignment group (ABI-R group) showed a statistically higher change in character competency than the group without role assignment (ABI group). Particularly, the ABI-R group has significantly higher grade than ABI group in empathy, responsibility, and respect among the sub-factors of character competency. However, in the case of the cooperation factor of character competency, the ABI group showed statistically significant higher grade than ABI-R group. The results of this study showed that Argument-Based Inquiry (ABI) as teaching and learning strategies in science can contribute to the enhancement of human character competency. In addition, we suggest that students should be actively involved in the class through role assignment, but it is necessary to present the class situation so that they can be actively engaged according to the problem situation rather than being fixed in a given role.

The effect of Confucian values on sense of citizen ethics and their relationship were analyzed to evaluate the receptivity of youths on Confucian ideas and usefulness of sense of citizen ethics. This study investigated a total of final 311 sets of data from male and female students at middle and high schools located in Seoul, Gyeonggi, South Korea. First, to identify the youths' Confucian values and level of sense of citizen ethics, descriptive statistical analysis was conducted. As a result, the survey subjects were found to have, concerning the Confucian values, world view M=3.54, human relations view M=3.66, morality cultivation M=3.76, and social order M=3.45, higher than 3.0 to represent positive levels. The morality cultivation, in particular, was recorded the highest among all whereas the social order was relatively lower, which represents the degree of relying on Confucian values to establish social order. Second, the sub-variables of Confucian values were verified according to the personal characteristics of the surveyed youths and differences in their entire perception was investigated. As a result, according to gender, morality cultivation was found higher in female students (M=3.85) than in male students (M=3.64). According to the subjective economic level of their household, world view was found higher in upper class (M=3.98) than middle-low class (M=3.25) and low class (M=3.22) while human relations view was found higher in middle-upper class (M=3.79) than low class (M=3.46). As for the family type, morality cultivation was found higher in extended family (M=3.83) than nuclear family (M=3.62); and social order was higher in extended family (M=3.54) than nuclear family (M=3.36). Third, to verify the study theme of identifying the effects of youths' Confucian values on sense of citizen morality, hierarchical regression analysis was employed in this study, which used the multi-level model of multiple regression analysis. As a result, the Confucian values was found to have significant positive (+) correlations with the entire sense of citizen ethics in order of human relations view(${\beta}=.499$), world view(${\beta}=.412$), social order(${\beta}=.341$), and morality cultivation(${\beta}=.241$). Confucian value showed significant positive (+) correlations with autonomy in order of morality cultivation(${\beta}=.458$), human relations view(${\beta}=.454$), social order(${\beta}=.362$), and world view(${\beta}=.158$). Confucian values was found to have significant positive (+) correlations with community spirit in order of human relations view(${\beta}=.295$), social order(${\beta}=.281$), and morality cultivation(${\beta}=.232$). As shown in the findings above, youths' Confucian values was found to have significant positive (+) effects on the sense of citizen ethics. It is noted that the higher the Confucian values, the more positive the sense of citizen ethics would be. Consequentially, the Confucian values was identified to play an important role in the sense of citizen ethics in the modern society. Based on this analysis, this study presented specific measures - the necessity and possibility of education on sense of citizen ethics under the theory of human nature. To this end, this study proposed to find an optimal interface between the contemporary sense of citizen ethics and Confucian ethics through the respect for human life and nature, man of virtue as the ideal human model, and united society as a desirable society model.

  • This study aims to verify the effects of the sewing practice class, developed for the cultivation of creativity and personality, the two qualities that the Korean Department of Education tried to emphasize in 2009 national curriculum. We conducted a single-group pretest-posttest experiment with the developed sewing practice class as a treatment. Results are as follows. First, the comparison results of before and after the developed sewing practice class showed that there were meaningful differences in creativity and its subfactors such as divergent thinking skill, problem solving ability, open-mindedness and patience. This is because in-class activities such as coming up with ideas by group discussion, creative activities and problem-solving experiences make the students be aware that they are the hosts of the class. It also affected their abilities of producing creative ideas and solving problems proactively. Second, the developed sewing practice class had an impact on students' personality and its subfactors like responsibility, diligence, consideration, communication skill, and collaborative ability. This practice class is based on personal activities which lead to the completion of the group assignment. This has not only emphasized individual responsibilities, but also highlighted the completion of group work and encouraged the flow of communication and cooperation among students. As a result, we concluded that this practice class helped nourish the participating students' personality.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of science classes using elementary school distance science classes on science academic achievement and creative personality. The research group and non-research group were selected for 6th grade elementary school students. After 10 weeks of experimental treatment, science classes were conducted with the contents of the elementary school science section, 'Changes of the seasons'. In the three domains of 'knowledge', 'inquiry', and 'attitude', which are sub-domains of science academic achievement, as a result of the pre-post test, there was a positive effect in 'inquiry' and 'attitude', which are sub-domains of science academic achievement. However, it was found that there was no positive effect in 'knowledge', a sub-domain of academic achievement. However, it was found that there was a positive effect in the overall test result of academic achievement. Therefore, it is interpreted that science classes using elementary school distance science classes had an effect on academic achievement. There was a significant effect in the sub-domains of the creative personality test, 'persistence/obsession', 'self-confidence', 'humor', 'imagination', 'openness', 'adventure', and 'independence'. However, it was found that there was no effect in the sub-domain 'curiosity'. The overall test results of the creative personality test showed a significant effect. Therefore, it is interpreted that science classes using elementary school distance science classes are effective in cultivating creative personality. Students' perceptions of science classes using elementary school distance science classes also showed positive responses.
