It is increasingly important to estimate daytime population for the sake of urban administration and urban economy. The estimation of daytime population using a census data on commute, however, has its own limits, particularly when applying to the metropolis such as Seoul which is dominated by the service industry. This study suggests a pedestrian flow as another estimate of daytime population and presents a methodology of Seoul Pedestrian Flow Survey. The data of pedestrian flow gives us a view into hourly and spatial distribution of daytime population, which cannot be provided by the use of census data. In addition, comparing with a census-based daytime population on the borough level show some features of a pedestrian flow as another estimate of daytime population.

This study investigates the time-space characteristics of the road traffic flows in Seoul and the relationship with land use patterns. For the purpose, we analyze the road traffic data collected at 118 observation sites over Seoul City area since 1993. We examine the time-trend of the annual average traffic flows per day during the last fourteen years. Three different trends are revealed: rapid increase during the time period between 1993 and 1997, maintenance same level after sharp decrease between year 1997 and 1998, and gradual decrease after sharp decrease between year 2003 and 2004. The spatial distribution patterns of road traffic flows have also been changed significantly during the period. The traffic flows in the urban center have been declined gradually, while the traffic flows in the boundary area and southern CBDs have increased dramatically. In order to examine the relationship with the changes in the land-use patterns and road traffic flows, we analyze the changes in the spatial distribution patterns of population and industries. We developed three multiple linear regression models to test the relationships between the changes in the land-use variables and road traffic flows.

The aims of this study is to find the facts of regional inequality and to suggest the desirable location of educational facilities and its related policies through the analysis of the distributional characteristics of high schools in Daegu viewing from public service facilities. The results are as follows. As of 2000 year, there are 76 high schools in operation in Daegu. The number of private high schools is more than that of national public ones in terms of their founders, and the number of general high schools outnumbers that of vocational high schools by their operational types. As a whole, the distribution of schools in Daegu is closely related to the population distribution(redistribution). In case of high schools, it shows that there is severe unevenness between demand and supply of educational facilities per district. The regional inequality of school facilities is getting worse by transfer and new establishment; inter-district transfer is mainly caused by the redistribution of population while intra-district transfer is accelerated by the pressure on better use of land. Recently there is a tendency that schools are newly established by public sector(national public schools) rather than by private sector(private schools). And the predilection or avoidance of a certain area in the process of choosing the site for transfer or new establishment of schools lead to inequality of education opportunities per district. In conclusion, the educational facilities should firstly be placed in the practice of public service facilities in terms of public welfare as well as the convenience of residents and regional inequality. Consequently, both construction of new high schools and the relocation of existing high schools have to be further activated. To achieve them, the role of public actions is particularly more important than that of private ones.

This study examines the spatial diffusion and locational charateristics of convenience stores in Daegu which had increased rapidly in the 1990s. The first convenience store (CVS) was introduced in the zone of transition of (Namgu district) adjacent to the city center or CBD in 1992. Thereafter they diffused into CBD and residential areas, but they have centered around places where their steady purchasing population was distributed. As a result, the spatial distribution of CVSs in Daegu shows a very uneven pattern concentrated in areas with many high school, in commercial and business areas, and apartment residential areas. It seems that this pattern is derived from two basic locational factors. Primarily, the location of CVSs in Daegu is very closely related with the spatial distribution of the demand population which will be clients for CVSs. Secondarily, it is also affected by the accessibility of streets which the demand population utilizes easily.

The key objective of this research is to review the effectiveness of spatial regression to identify the influencing factors of spatial distribution patterns of floating population. To this end, global and local spatial autocorrelation test were performed using seoul floating population survey(2014) data. The result of Moran's I and Getis-Ord $Gi^*$ as used in the analysis derived spatial heterogeneity and spatial similarities of floating population patterns in a statistically significant range. Accordingly, Geographically Weighted Regression was applied to identify the relationship between land use attributes and population floating. Urbanization area, green tract of land of micro land cover data were aggregated in to $400m{\times}400m$ grid boundary of Seoul. Additionally public transportation variables such as intersection density transit accessibility, road density and pedestrian passage density were adopted as transit environmental factors. As a result, the GWR model derived more improved results than Ordinary Least Square(OLS) regression model. Furthermore, the spatial variation of applied local effect of independent variables for the floating population distributions.
The regional distribution of the selling amount on the internet shopping is divided into urban areas and rural areas. In the urban areas, a large amount of selling and various commodity groups are purchased. In the rural areas, a small amount of selling simple clothing goods, home kitchen goods, and the others commodity groups are purchased. The regional distribution is considered dependent upon the size of population, the development degree of the education and service industry in the region, and the buying power of women in the 25 to 49 year group. This regional trend shows the difference of each population composition between urban and rural areas during the period of economic growth in our country affects internet shopping. Therefore consumer's limited purchase behavior is apparent in rural areas.

This paper aims to analyze the changes of the population distribution of metropolitan area by the development of the new town-type innovative city, focusing on the case of the Daegu Innovative City. Using dataset in the survey of population trend and the migration statistics microdata provided by the Statistics Korea, we decomposed population changes of Daegu and surrounding regions into natural increase and social increases(net migration). As a result of the analysis, Dong-gu, where the Daegu Innovation City is located, experienced population growth due to its increase of net migration, whereas the total population in Daegu been decreasing continuously between 2007 and 2016. In particular, the occurrence of high net migration to Dong-gu in 2014 showed a pattern consistent with the completion of the Daegu Innovative City development and the relocation of government institutions from the Seoul metro area. As a result of analyzing the migration to Dong-gu, the population moved from the Seoul metro area was 6.9% of the total, while the population moving from the other 7 gu-gun areas in Daegu (35.8%) and the surrounding regions (8.2%) were significantly high. In particular, the migration to Dong-gu were from neighboring areas, such as Suseong-gu, Buk-gu and Gyeongsan-si. Therefore, the development of the new town-type innovative city could accelerate toward sprawling urban structure.

The necessity of a management for a metropolitan has long intrigued many urban scholars and researchers who are interested in Busan metropolitan spatial structure and its problems. The purpose of this study is to investigate the dynamic changes of spatial structure in Busan Metropolitan by analyzing the population, employment and Land prices, for the period of 1993, 2001. The major results in this study are as follows; While main-centers have experienced significant loss of population, sub-centers have been growing. Jung-Ang Dong still has high accessibility in population potentials, but its accessibility has declined since 1993. Pu-Jeon Dong had increasing trend of population until 2000, but its population has also descended since that time. Meanwhile, the population of sub-centers has increased in its accessibility. And The spatial pattern of the population in Busan has changed from monocentric to polycentric. This phenomenon was almost spontaneously generated from population dispersion from existing main-centers. In terms of change of land values are there is a spatial and temporal rhythm in the urbanization of Busan. The highest land value in Busan is shown in CBD. The development of Busan proceeded along the north-south belt and extended to west Busan.
There was a rapid population change accompanied with changes in population structure recently in Korea. The changes were nationwide though greater in rural, where the population decreased steeply, through the internal migration from rural to urban. There, in the structure of Gun's population, severely distorted features have been shown in the study. Also, the structure differ greatly by Gun. It indicated that the rural problems were much more serious than anticipated when analyzed generally. It tells us that we should consider the problems related with different population structure in developing the programs for the rural.

After city of Busan has been entered to the aging society in 2000, the city has the highest aging rate among 7 representative cities in 2011. Moreover, while entire population and number of average household are decreasing, over 65 years old of elderly population is rapidly increasing. So, it is possible to enter the super-aged society, where aging rate would be about 20% after 2020. The purpose of this study is that older housing-related analysis is consisted of dong-unit, and this led microscopic analysis has become necessary. Surveys from 2000 through 2010, census aggregate (output area) unit of spatial analysis was conducted. Take advantages of this, aging population and area, soaring area, high-density areas, such as the region of interest were primary extracted, and microscopic location and spatial distribution patterns were analyzed. Upon analysis, aging population is concentrated in the city and adjacent area, the highlands, and 10 years of increasing rate was more than 30 times in certain aggregate. Regarding the characteristic of these areas, the original city center, Busan, especially concentrated and intensified in aging population. Also, 2000 to 2010, the overall distribution pattern of Busan has identified aging population that is increasingly being distributed. This is the result, which is confronted with previous research result. Entering a super aged-society for the future is accordance with migration of social costs and improve the quality of life of elderly. And this could be the basic information to use the spatial dimension for the corresponding.
