Since the rock fragmentation by blasting can affect the subsequent processes including loading, hauling and secondary crushing, its control is essential for the assessment of blasting efficiency as well as production cost. In this study, we were analyzed the rock fragmentation by the direction of artificial joint. The underground blasting experiments were performed after forming the vertical and horizontal artificial joints. The blast fragmentation was conducted by the split-desktop which is a 2D image processing program. As a result, it was found that the horizontal artificial joint was evaluated to have lower overall the size of muck pile than the vertical artificial joint and the distribution of the size of muck pile was varied. It is possible that the direction of artificial joint could suppress the occur of oversize muck pile and control to a certain size or less.
Soil-rock interface, mainly founded in Granite region of Korea, is known as one of the important factor of the slope failure at the rainfall due to smaller shear strength than soil itself. However, research of the effect on slope stability by soil-rock interfaces is insufficient. Therefore, a series of direct shear tests were performed in order to investigate the effect of soil-rock interface on slope stability. The method of tests is to get sand itself and sand-artificial rock interface shear strength from different grain size of sands and artificial rock samples. The results of tests show that the friction angle of interface depends primarily on particle size and surface roughness. Interface friction angle ratio ${\mu}(={\delta}/{\Phi})$ is in the range of 0.75 ~ 0.96, this results indicate that interface friction angle is smaller than sand itself.
In order to minimize the human and time consumption required for rock classification, research on rock classification using artificial intelligence (AI) has recently developed. In this study, basic volcanic rocks were subdivided by using polarizing microscope thin section images. A convolutional neural network (CNN) model based on Tensorflow and Keras libraries was self-producted for rock classification. A total of 720 images of olivine basalt, basaltic andesite, olivine tholeiite, trachytic olivine basalt reference specimens were mounted with open nicol, cross nicol, and adding gypsum plates, and trained at the training : test = 7 : 3 ratio. As a result of machine learning, the classification accuracy was over 80-90%. When we confirmed the classification accuracy of each AI model, it is expected that the rock classification method of this model will not be much different from the rock classification process of a geologist. Furthermore, if not only this model but also models that subdivide more diverse rock types are produced and integrated, the AI model that satisfies both the speed of data classification and the accessibility of non-experts can be developed, thereby providing a new framework for basic petrology research.

It is very difficult to capture the weathering characteristics of rock because of limitation caused by time and space. A new scheme of experiment that includes physical and chemical weathering processes was implemented on Cretaceous granitic rock samples from Kimhae area to investigate the variations of geomechanical properties of deteriorated rocks due to artificial weathering processes. The seismic velocity was found to decrease with increasing artificial weathering cycle. Effective porosity and absorption tend to increase with artificial weathering processes. The amount of deterioration of rock samples depend on pre-test degree of weathering. Effective porosity, absorption and seismic velocity can be used as the measure of weathering characteristics of granite in the study area. Weathering is accelerated by combined effect of physical and chemical weathering processes. The new experimental methodology conducted in this study has strong capability to analyze the weathering characteristics of rocks.
With the upcoming 4th industrial revolution era, the applications of artificial intelligence(AI) and big data in engineering are increasing. In the field of blasting, there have been various reported cases of the application of AI. In this paper, AI techniques, such as artificial neural network, fuzzy logic, generic algorithm, swarm intelligence, and support vector machine, which are widely applied in blasting area, are introduced, The studies about the application of AI for the prediction of ground vibration, rock fragmentation, fly rock, air overpressure, and back break are surveyed and summarized. It is for providing starting points for the discussion of active application of AI on effective and safe blasting design, enhancing blasting performance, and minimizing the environmental impact due to blasting.
Fracture mechanics properties of rock materials can he applied to predict the distribution of natural fractures in rock masses, and also to assess the safety of rock slopes and underground structures. In this study, rock fracture toughness and other fracture rrechanics properties of sorne lithologies showing apparently rock-property-controlled distribution of natural fractures were measured. Propagation behaviors of natural and experirnental fractures were also characterized both qualitatively and quantitatively, in terns of the propagation types and sorne statistical parameters. It was concluded that the application of fracture mechanics theories to the ge6logic materials should be based on the geological background and evidences.
The relationship between the mechanical and textural properties of sedimentary rocks has been studied for decades. However, inconsistencies in the results have arisen from both the inhomogeneity of natural rocks and the difficulties encountered in controlling just one textural factor of interest in each experiment. This work produced artificial sedimentary rocks to enable control of every independent parameter at all times. Their homogeneity lowered the deviation of the results, and thus they produced clearer correlations than for natural rocks. The samples were made by mixing bassanite powder with water and silica sand, which produced rocks consisting of sand and gypsum cement. The effect of grain content and size on mechanical properties such as uniaxial compressive strength, Young's modulus, and seismic velocity was estimated. Increasing grain content lowered the compressive strength but raised Young's modulus and seismic velocity. Overall, grain size did not linearly affect the mechanical properties of the samples, but affected them in some way. In future, these results can be compared and integrated with similar experiments using different cement or grain types. This should allow comparison of the effects of the rock constituents themselves and their interactions, with applicability to all kinds of sedimentary rocks.
