In order to identify soil characteristics and to estimate the age of wetland, soil samples of Mt. Sohwangbyoung wetland and Jilmoi wetland known as peatland in Odaesan National Park.were collected and analyzed. Soil pH of Mt. Sohwangbyoung wetland and Jilmoi wetland showed average pH of 5.5, and did now show any significant difference according to the time and plant community. Total ionic content of soil showed different values among plant communities, but no difference by time in each plant community. Soil exchangeable cations such as Na, K and Mg showed a similar pattern of total ionic content. Unlike other cations, however, Ca content showed significant differences according to the plant community and time. Soil organic matter and total nitrogen contents showed remarkable differences according to plant community, and especially showed very low valeus at the place where Sphagnum palustre distributes. Based on the results of the above, Mt. Sohwangbyoung wetland and Jilmoi wetland can be considered as weakly acidic bog. From age analysis, two wetlands are estimated to have been formed before 100 AD for Mt. Sohwangbyoung wetland and 1448 AD for Jilmoi wetland, respectively.
Oil degradation agent was developed with organic sludge and modified peat moss (MPM) to recover oil contaminated soil. Waste sludge discharged from wastewater treatment plant of chemical plant in Ulsan National Industrial Park was used as organic sludge, and MPM was purchased. Organic sludge was adequate to use as growth medium for microorganism, the surface of MPM had porous structure which could enhance the cultivation condition of oil degradation microorganisms. Water contents and TPH variation with time were observed to investigate the degradation capacity of developed degradation agent. Water contents were rapidly decreased with higher contents of MPM, however, in case of TPH, high MPM content decreased the degradation capacity. Therefore, it was recommended that the content of MPM was controlled to below 10% in degradation agent as mixing organic sludge with MPM.
Global warming due to climate change is a problem facing the entire world. Several factors, such as $CO_2O$ concentration, level of warming, soil temperature, precipitation, water content of soil and denitrification by denitrifying bacteria influence the emission of nitrous oxide ($N_2O$) from soil. In this study, we investigated nitrous oxide emissions from the soil of two wetlands, Jilmoineup in Mt. Odae and Moojechineup in Mt. Jungjok, according to temperature change. Soil collected in Jilmoineup in July showed increasing $N_2O$ emissions as temperature increases, but did not show any significant differences at $10^{\circ}C$ (p<0.05). Soil of $15^{\circ}C$ and $20^{\circ}C$ showed increasing pattern of $N_2O$ emissions until 24 h. After that, however, there was no difference in temperature. Overall, $N_2O$ emissions showed significant differences according to temperature (p<0.05). Soil collected from Moojechineup in July showed increasing $N_2O$ emissions according to temperature increase, but did not show any significant differences at $10^{\circ}C$ (p<0.05) as was the case for Jilmoineup soil. On the other hand, two wetland soils showed a slight increase of $N_2O$ emissions by additional nitrogen supply, but did not show any significant differences in the presence of nitrogen or between nitrogen sources. In conclusion, increasing temperature the wetland soil increased the emission of $N_2O$, which is a known greenhouse gas. In order to more clearly identify $N_2O$ emissions, various subsequent studies such as the influence and correlation of several factors are required.

Growth and fruit characteristics of 'Duke' highbush blueberry by mixture of different organic matters in soil were investigated. The soil acidity was 4.2 to 4.8, sawdust treatment was the highest, and peat soil and peatmoss treatments were similar. The organic matter content of the soil was 2.5% for sawdust and 4.1% for soil with peatmoss and peat soil. The soil hardness of all treatment was found to be about 1 ~ 5 kgf cm-2 which was suitable for growing crops. The number of suckers and main stems were high in the order of peat soil, peatmoss, sawdust treatment. In addition, the blueberry plants in the peatmoss and peat soil treatments had thicker and longer suckers and more shoots than those in the sawdust treatment. Among the characteristics of fruit, there was no statistical difference between the organic materials treatment in weight, diameter, length, and hardness of fruit. However, the total soluble solid and fruit yield were high in the order of peat soil, peatmoss, sawdust treatment. Therefore, as a result of comprehensively reviewing the characteristics of growth and fruits according to the soil environment, it was determined that peatmoss could be replaced with peat soil for stable production in domestic blueberry cultivation.

There are several purpose to introduce microorganism into the Soil. The major purpose is to promote plant growth and inhibit plant pathogens. The model example is to put in nitrogen fixing symbiotic bacteria, Pythium and Rhizobium. In order to achieve the intended goal, the introduced microorganism should survive and colonize with sufficient density. The survival of introduced microorganism depend upon biotic and abiotic factors. Predation and competition are important among biotic factor. Water tension, organic carbon, inorganic nutrients(N, P), pH are important factor among abiootic factor. Soil texture and distribution of soil pore are also important in the survival and colonization of introduced microorganism. Selection by soil ecosystem for inoculant is a crucial factor for colonization. Good example are control of autochtonous microorganism and the introduction of surfactant biodegrading Pseudomonas. Sometimes, carriers such as peat and montmorillonite can be added to help colonization. Carriers can protect introduced microorganism by supplying protective microhabitat. Organic polymer is also used as a carrier to immobilize bacteria or industrial enzymes. Examples of these carrier are calcium alginate, agarose and k-carrageenan. The function of these carrier is to provide microhabitat and help colonization for introduced microorganism.
Effects of elevated carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) on soil microbial processes were studied in a northern peatland. Intact peat cores with surface vegetation were collected from a northern Welsh fen, and incubated either under elevated carbon dioxide (700 ppm) or ambient carbon dioxide (350 ppm) conditions for 4 months. Higher algal biomass was found under the elevated $CO_2$ condition, suggesting $CO_2$ fertilization effect on primary production, At the end of the incubation, trace gas production and consumption were analyzed using chemical inhibitors. For methane ($CH_4$ ), methyl fluoride ($CH_3F$) was applied to determine methane oxidation rates, while acetylene ($C_2H_2$) blocking method were applied to determine nitrification and denitrification rates. First, we have adopted those methods to optimize the reaction conditions for the wetland samples. Secondly, the methods were applied to the samples incubated under two levels of $CO_2$. The results exhibited that elevated carbon dioxide increased both methane production (210 vs. $100\;ng\;CH_4 g^{-1}\;hr^{-1}$) and oxidation (128 vs. $15\;ng\;CH_4 g^{-1}\;hr^{-1}$), resulting in no net increase in methane flux. For nitrous oxide ($N_2O$) , elevated carbon dioxide enhanced nitrous oxide emission probably from activation of nitrification process rather than denitrification rates. All of these changes seemed to be substantially influenced by higher oxygen diffusion from enhanced algal productivity under elevated $CO_2$.
The amount and composition of dissolved organic carbon in wetlands are of great importance for their influence in secondary productivity, various biogeochemical processes, and aquatic ecosystem functions. In the present study, we measured variations of DOC and phenolics concentrations in pore-water of three northern peatlands (bog, fen, and swamp) over a 1-year period. General microbial activity (soil respirometry) and phenol oxidase enzyme activity were determined in the same peatlands to elucidate mechanisms underlying the differences in DOC and phenolics contents. The concentrations of DOC varied 25.5-45.4 (bog),29.2-71.4 (fen), and 13.5-87.6 (swamp) mg/L, while phenolic concentrations ranged 13.3-48.1 (bog), 7.6-29.5(fen) , and 4.9-30.8 (swamp) mg/L. The seasonal variations of DOC and phenolics in the swamp suggest that litterfall may be one of the most important factors for the DOC dynamics in such systems. The lowest microbial activity and phenol oxidase activity were found in the bog, which appears to Induce high percentage of phenolic contents in pore-water from bogs. It is also suggested that not only the DOC concentrations but also composition of DOC is of great importance in wetland biogeochernistry.

In this study, the organic carbon normalized-sorption coefficients (Koc) for the binding affinity of phenanthrene (PHE) to 16 different soil humic and fulvic acids of various origins were determined by fluorescence quenching. The humic and fulvic acids used in this study were isolated from 6 different domestic soils including Mt. Hanla soil, IHSS standard soil and peat as well as Aldrich humic acid and characterized by elemental composition, ultraviolet absorption at 254 nm, composition of main structural fragments determined by CPMAS $^{13}$C NMR. The Koc values($\times$10$^4$, L/kg C) for each of HA and FA samples were in the range of 1.48$\sim$8.65 and higher in HA compared to that of FA(3.13$\sim$8.65 vs 1.48$\sim$2.48) in the experimental condition([PHE]/[HS] = 0.02$\sim$0.2(mg/L)/(mg-OC/L), pH 6). The correlation study between the structural descriptors of humic and fulvic acids and log Koc values of phenanthrene, show that the magnitude of Koc values positively correlated with the UV$_{254}$ absorptivity([ABS]$_{254}$) and two $^{13}$C NMR descriptors (C$_{Ar-H,C}$, $\sum$C$_{Ar}$/$\sum$C$_{Alk}$), while negatively correlated with the independent descriptors of the(N+O)/C atomic ratios and $^{13}$C NMR descriptors (I$_{C-O}$/I$_{C-H,C}$). These results confirmed that the binding affinity for the hydrophobic organic compound, phenanthrene are significantly influenced by the polarity and aromaticity of soil humc and fulvic acids.
Lychnis wilfordii (Regel) Maxim. is one of the wetland specialists mainly distributed in peatlands at high latitudes. In Korea, it is isolated in two regions. This study investigated habitats, growth traits, and self-compatibility of L. wilfordii and assessed the internal dynamics of its population persistence. Its population has remained stable in the Yongneup Wetland Protected Area (YWPA). There was a clear difference in vegetation environment between YWPA and the distribution area in Daegwallyeong (DWL), Pyeongchang-gun. It has self-compatibility while pollinators facilitate its seed production. It produces a large number of hibernacles and bears the maximum number of branches and fruits in soil with rich organic contents. However, it grows and bears fruits even under the condition of low organic contents. In YWPA, L. wilfordii is not distributed in high moor but widely distributed in low moor where tussocks by Carex thunbergii var. appendiculata are developed. It is mainly distributed on the top of tussocks also. Therefore, it is judged that the formation, growth, and extinction of tussocks by C. thunbergii var. appendiculata is closely related to the establishment, growth, and extinction of plants distributed in this space. It is assessed that the current YWPA has well-developed tussocks in which L. wilfordii is widely distributed, and extinction and re-establishment progress well. Accordingly, the L. wilfordii population is expected to be sustainable in the long term given if its current ecological process is maintained well.
The environmental change of Yong-nup in Mt. Dae-Am, which is located at the northern part of Kangwon-Do, Korea, was assesed with peat sedimentary carbon and nitrogen isotope analysis. The surface layer of the peat (0 ${\sim}$ 5 cm) was 190 year BP, and the middle layers (30 ${\sim}$ 35 cm and 50 ${\sim}$ 55 cm) were 870 year BP and 1900 year BP, respectively. Bulk sedimentation rate was estimated to be about 0.4 mm $year^{-1}$ for 0 cm to 30 cm and 0.15 mm $year^{-1}$ for 35 cm to 50 cm. The $^{14}C$ age of the bottom sediment (75 ${\sim}$ 80 cm) collected and measured in this study was about 1900 year BP, although it was measured that the $^{14}C$ of the lowest bottom sediment in Yong-nup was 4105 ${\pm}$ 175 year BP (GX-23200). Since the $^{14}C$ ages for 50 ${\sim}$ 55 cm and 75 ${\sim}$ 80 cm layers were almost the same as 1890 ${\pm}$ 80 fear BP (NUTA 5364) and 1850 ${\pm}$ 90 year BP (NUTA 5462), respectively, we have estimated that the deep layers (55 ${\sim}$ 80 cm) in the high moor were the original forest soil. The low organic C and N contents in the deeper layers supported the inference. The sediment of 50 ${\sim}$ 55 cm layer contains much sandy material and showed very low organic content, suggesting the erosion (flooding) from the surrounding area. In this context, the Yong-nup, high moor, of Mt. Dae-Am, might have developed to the sampling site at about 1900 year BP. The ${\delta}^{13}C$ values of organic carbon and the ${\delta}^{15}N$ values of total nitrogen in the peat sediments fluctuated with the depths. The profile of ${\delta}^{13}C$ may indicate that the Yong-nup of Mt. Dae-Am have experienced the dry-wet and cool-warm period cycles during the development of the high moor. The ${\delta}^{15}N$ may indicate that the nitrogen cycling in the Yong-nup have changed from the closed (regeneration depending) system to the open (rain $NO_3\;^-$ and $N_2$ fixation depending) system during the development of the high moor.
