  • Soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) is a high-protein oilseed crop, cultivated worldwide. Soybean seeds are abundant in various secondary metabolites with physiologically active. Mature seeds of 25 soybean cultivars with various morphological and physiological characteristics analyzed for secondary metabolites, such as carotenoid, isoflavone, and soyasaponin. These secondary metabolites showed various content by genotype in 25 cultivars. Total carotenoid content ranged from 1.23 to 33.78 mg/g and three cultivars, such as IT177645, PI90763 and IT234975 with black seed coat showed high levels of total carotenoid. Total isoflavones content ranged from 20.28 to 276.35 mg/100g and were detected high levels in Savoy, PI90763 and KLG16001. In addition, total soyasaponins content ranged from 33.12 to 246 mg/100g and were detected high levels in PI90763, PI86490 and IT234975. The PI90763 was showed abundant content in all of the carotenoid, isoflavones and soyasaponins. These results could be valuable information for the development of new soybean cultivars and regulation of secondary metabolites biosynthesis in soybean.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of metabolic syndrome(MS) on quality of life(QoL) using the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey of 2013. We analyzed data for 4,890 adults, aged 19 year or older and provided the correct data about MS and QoL. MS was defined by the National Cholesterol Education Program-Adult Treatment Panel III with Korea-specific waist circumference cutoffs and QoL was measured by the EuroQol 5-dimension(EQ-5D). The prevalence of MS was 22.1% and high density lipoprotein(HDL)-cholesterol was the highest prevalence in MS components. The mean of EQ-5D index was significantly lower in subject with MS compared to subjects without MS. Among MS components, only higher waist circumference led to EQ-5D index decreasing and the regression coefficient was -0.018. In conclusion, we suggest the attention to QoL and intervention program for improving the QoL in subjects with MS.

  • This study was the secondary analysis using the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey of 2012 and purpose was to investigate the effects of menopause on the metabolic syndrome(MetS) in Korean women. In raw data, total 2,746 women aged ${\geq}19$ years and provided the correct data about menstruation and menopause were analysed. The results were as follows: First, components of MetS were significantly different according to menopausal status. Second, the prevalence of MetS was 13.2% in premenopausal women and 42.7% in postmenopausal women. Third, the Odds ratio of postmenopausal women was 4.88(95% CI=3.888-6.126) compared with premenopausal women for MetS. As 5 years from 40 years increased, the Odds ratios of postmenopausal women were 3.15(95% Confidence Interval=1.862-5.331), 4.159(2.558-6.761), 5.971(3.955-9.016), 9.52(6.591-13.749) compared with premenopausal women for MetS, respectively. Based on the results, the intervention should be developed and provided for preventing and managing the MetS in postmenopausal women.

  • This study aimed to identify factors associated with metabolic abnormalities in non-obese and obese postmenopausal women based on biopsychosocial model. Secondary data analysis was conducted using data from 5,335 postmenopausal women who participated in the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2015-2021). According to logistic analysis with applying a complex simple analysis in SPSS 26.0, biomedical (increased age; a family history of hypertension, type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, and cardiovascular diseases) and biosocial factors (low educational level) were associated with 1-2 metabolic abnormalities and metabolic syndrome, regardless of adiposity. Additionally, low familial socioeconomic status and prolonged sedentary behaviors were the biosocial and psychosocial factors associated with metabolic syndrome regardless of adiposity. Finally, insufficient physical activity was associated with metabolic syndrome in obese postmenopausal women. Based on these results, tailored strategies should be developed considering the significant factors associated with metabolic abnormalities and adiposity in postmenopausal women.

  • Streptomyces shows a eukaryotic characteristic that vegetative cell can grow into mycelial form and has morphological and physiological differentiation at a certain period during its life cycle. Streptomyces has been used for the production of many biologically active compounds, such as antibiotics and pronase. Production of second metabolites and differentiation of the vegetative cell share the certain period of its lift cycle. Therefore, second metabolites may affect the differentiation of the vegetative cell. One of the microbial hormone, called A-factor, regulates the production of second metabolites, sporulation and differentiation of the cells. Streptomyces griseus produces streptomycin as well as many different kinds of proteinase. As mentioned, period of proteinases production overlaps with the period of differentiation of the vegetative cells. Protease may play a important role for the differentiation of the cells. In this paper, function of the SGPD gene cloned from S. griseus IFO 13350 tested whether it affects for the differentiation of A-factor mutated S. griseus HH1 and S. griseus IFO13350. pWHM3 and pWHM3-sprD plasmid was transformed into S. griseus HH1 and S. griseus IFO13350. Chymotrypsin activity of the cultured medium of the transformants with pWHM3-sprD plasmid didn't show any change with that of the transformants with plasmid only. The transformants with pWHM3-sprD plasmid didn't show the increase of the production of actinorhodin as well as morphological change in S. griseus IFO 13350 and HH1, as well. The promoter sequences of the SGPA and SGPB gene which encode chymotrypsin-like protease, were compared with that of SGPD gene. Regulatory mechanism of gene expression of proteinase genes will be studied for the development of high production system for protease as well as the function of the proteases.

  • Perilla seed oil is considered to be a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids and phenolic compounds, which have various health benefits. To improve its oil content and nutritional quality, 29 varieties of perilla have been bred, but their nutritional qualities, including the fatty acid and phenolic compound contents, have not been investigated. Therefore, in this study, the seed metabolite profiles, including the fatty acids, of these 29 perilla varieties were analyzed. Palmitic acid, stearic acid, linoleic acid, linolenic acid, rosmarinyl glucoside, and rosmarinic acid were identified as the major metabolites of perilla. The fatty acid contents were higher in the Okdong, Deulsaem, Daesil, Joim, Yeupsil, Danjo, and Joongmo5103 varieties (in order). However, the total phenolic compounds and antioxidative activities of Okdong and Deulsaem were relatively low, whereas the fatty acid and total phenol contents of Joim, Yeupsil, and Danjo were relatively high. These results may be useful for comparing the nutritional quality of the 29 perilla varieties.
