Dualism in mathematics classroom and some teaching strategies for overcoming students' dualistic beliefs (수학 교실의 이원론적 신념과 그 극복을 위한 교수방안 고찰)

  • Many students have dualistic beliefs about mathematics and its learning- for example, there is always just one right answer in mathematics and their role in the classroom is receiving and absorbing knowledge from teacher and textbook. This article investigated some epistemic implications and limitations of common mathematics teaching practices, which often present mathematical facts(or procedures) and treat students' errors in a certain and absolute way. Langer and Piper's (1987) experiment and Oliveira et al.'s (2012) study suggested that presenting knowledge in conditional language which allows uncertainty can foster students' productive epistemological beliefs. Changing the focus and patterns of classroom communication about students' errors could help students to overcome their dualistic beliefs. This discussion will contribute to analyze the implicit epistemic messages conveyed by mathematics instructions and to investigate teaching strategies for stimulating students' epistemic development in mathematics.

  • 20세기 후반을 거치며 환경 관련 이슈는 조경 이론과 설계에서도 중심 주제로 자리잡아 왔다. 환경에 대한 고려를 중심에 둔 이른바 생태적 조경계획 설계는 조경의 패러다임에 일대 전환을 가져오고 조경의 대사회적 역할을 교정했다는 평가를 받고 있다. 그러나 이러한 흐름은 동시대 조경 이론과 설계의 가장 첨예한 쟁점 중의 하나인 생태학과 예술 사이의 이분법을 심화시켰다는 비판에 직면하고 있는 것 또한 사실이다. 즉 생태적 조경은 환경적 가치 대형태 구축, 부지의 생태적 분석 대 창조적 표현이라는 이원론적 갈등 관계를 형성해 온 것이다. 이 논문은 이러한 양상의 생태-예술 이원론을 해체하고 대안적 조경의 지평을 구축하는 일이 현대 조경설계가 풀어야 할 최우선의 과제라고 파악한다. 이 논문은 특히 최근의 조경설계에서 실험되고 있는 경험의 구축, 변화와 프로세스의 고려, 일시성과 불확정성을 존중하는 태도 등을 통해 생태-예술 이원론을 해체할 수 있는 실천적 전략을 모색한다. 뿐만 아니라 그러한 전략에서 드러나는 대안적 조경미학이 최근의 환경미학과 공유하고 있는 이론적 지형을 검토함으로써 생태학과 예술의 접점을 가로지르는 조경설계의 새로운 좌표를 탐색한다.

A Study on the Application of Perry's Epistemological Development Scheme in Mathematics Education (Perry의 인식론적 신념 발달도식의 수학교육 적용 방안 연구)

  • The traditional teaching-learning in mathematics, which pursue only one correct answer, should be reexamined to cope with an age of uncertainty. In this research, Perry's epistemological development scheme was noticed as a theoretical approach to diagnose problems of dualistic mathematics lessons and to search solutions of the problems. And Design-Based Research method was adopted, We developed the epistemological development scheme through considering Perry's theory and related studies, scaffoldings and teaching-learning to enhance students' epistemological positions in mathematics. Based on these discussions we designed teaching experiment about operations with negative numbers, and analyzed its didactic implications.

Risk Epistemology and STS Perspective (위험 인식론과 STS적 관점: 우리는 더 안전해 졌는가?)

  • This essay explores the possibility of risk epistemology based on STS perspective. The starting point is the modern society's dilemma that the more technoscience has been developed, the more modern society has become riskier. The conventional risk epistemology, based on modernist dualism, has a tendency to be negligent of the relationship between risk society and technoscience, since it has only paid attention to either side of objectivity of risk or context of risk. In contrast, STS perspective on risk makes a point of focusing on the need of constructing the comprehensive risk epistemology, instead of the traditional approach based on modernist dualism. Now, this perspective goes ahead through "bridging" between objective risk(nature) and contextual risk(society) toward co-production of risk, as a result that we can no more turn our head from the emergence of new hybrids and, in turn, increase of complexity of heterogeneous networks. As such I suggest the concept of technosphere so as to reflect and display these characteristics of this perspective, and assess the potentiality of the concept.

  • 일상생활에서 우리가 정하는 대상중에 명확하게 그 소속을 정의 할 수 없는 경우가 많다. 이러한 대상들을 수학적으로 다루기 위하여 퍼지집합의 개념을 도입하였다. 이 퍼지집합 개념은 각 대상이 속한다, 안속한다라는 이원론적인 논리오부터, 각대상을 그 모임에 속하는 정도로 이해함으로써 일반화된 개념이다.

Consciousness, Conceivability and Zombie (의식, 상상가능성, 좀비)

  • Consciousness dualists argue that materialism is false because of the conceivability of zombie which has no consciousness. The argument from conceivability applies to consciousness asymmetrically with $Water=H_2O$ whose identity was already established. However I think that argument is unsound because asymmetric application Is implausible. First, the metaphysical sap between water and $H_2O$ must be filled not by conceptual analysis, but by empirical methods: the neuroscientific developments will fill the metaphysical gap of consciousness. Second, consciousness dualists said it is illusion when we seem to conceive of $H_2O$ without water, but it is not illusion when we conceive the tumble with no consciousness. I argue it is also illusion in the case of latter. So two cases must be concerned equally.
