  • For cracked concrete, it is obvious that cracks should be preferential channel for the penetration of aggressive substances such as chloride ions according to the previous researches. In order to extend the lifetime of cracked concrete, critical issues in the performance of the concrete is the risk of chloride-induced corrosion. Even though crack width can be reduced due to the high reinforcement ratio, the question is to which extend these cracks may jeopardize the durability of cracked concrete. If the size of crack is small, surface treatment system can be considered as one of the best options to extend the service life of concrete structures exposed to marine environment simply in terms of cost effectiveness versus durability performance. Thus, it should be decided to undertake an experimental study on the effect of surface coating system, which can be able to seal the concrete and the cracks to aggressive substances-induced corrosion in particular. In this study, it is excuted to examine the effect of surfaced treated systems on chloride penetration and carbonation through compressive stress induced cracks. Experimental results have showed conclusively that critical stress linked with deterioration, should be existed in compressive stress ratio 50 ~ 70% for chloride penetration and 70 ~ 80% for carbonation, respectively. When the critical stress is exceeded in concrete, a comparatively large deterioration was measured where the critical stress in concrete, the increase in the mass transportation is marginal in spite of the large increase in micro-cracks. As for the effect of surface coating system on crack-sealing, it can be seen conclusively that cracks can be healed.

  • Reinforcement corrosion is generally prohibited under normal condition by the alkalinity of the pore water in the concrete. However, concrete structures in marine environment are subjected to chloride attack due to the high salinity of the sea water. Thus the probability of steel corrosion becomes higher when the chloride ions are introduced into the concrete. Steel corrosion is a decisive factor for the determination of service life of the marine concrete structure because chloride ions are abundant in the sea, and piers are the typical construction elements in concrete structures in marine environment. Hence, it is of great importance to evaluate the service life of the piers. In this paper, chloride penetration analysis for the rectangular pier in the marine environment is performed considering the diffusion and convection movement of chlorides. Result reveals that the service life of the reinforcement with drying-wetting cycles is much shorter than that of the reinforcement with saturated condition. This may be due to the fact that moisture movement is much faster that chloride diffusion.

  • The estimation functions were proposed for calculating diffusion coefficient, chloride binding, and evaporable water. The program estimating chloride ion penetration was developed on the basis of these functions and the effects of humidity, curing temperature, water-cement ratio, and $C_3$A on chloride penetration were analyzed. The relative humidity increases the depth of chloride ion penetration and the trend becomes greater with aging. On the contrary, the influence of curing temperature on chloride ion penetration decreases with aging. By the way, the rise of $C_3$A in cement increases total chloride concentration on the surface as the bound chloride concentration increases but it decreases total chloride concentration on the inner part as the diffusion velocity of free chloride decreases. The fall of water-cement ratio decreases the chloride penetration depth rapidly. Therefore, the reduction of water-cement ratio may be the most effective method for reducing of the steel corrosion by chloride penetration.

  • In order to find the best compositions of the dimethomorph formulation containing fatty alcohol ethoxylate surfactants as an activator adjuvant and recommend the good management way of the formulations to allow an intended uptake rate, factors affecting foliar uptake of active ingredients into cucumber were investigated and compared each other. Among tested, the most important factors were air temperature in which plants were located after spraying of aqueous formulations containing activator adjuvant, and deposit of wax on the leaf surface of cucumber. Dimethomorph uptake was found to be increased by sunlight. When aqueous formulations had long-polyethoxylated fatty alcohol surfactants, the relative humidity of the room in which the plants were located after spraying with the formulations did not severely influence the foliar uptake. Maintaining a mild temperature and avoiding too strong sunlight after spraying with dimethomorph formulations were found to be resonable management strategies.

  • In this study, seawater intrusion was assessed employing a kind of biological parameters such as Escherichia coli and Enterococcus faecalis while lab-prepared reclaimed water was recharged to prevent seawater intrusion. Chemical factors indicating seawater intrusion such as Cl$^-$, Ca$^{2+}$, Mg$^{2+}$ and specific conductivity were also simultaneously investigated where an ion exchange between a matrix in artificial aquifer and cations in solution was estimated. Both Escherichia coli and Enterococcus faecalis were shown to be very sensitive against degree of salinity during saline water intrusion. Enterococcus faecalis more strongly resisted against salinity than that of Escherichia coli. The ratio of Enterococcus faecalis divided by E. coli in the process of seawater intrusion increased up to more than 50$\sim$100 times in 18 hours whereas E. coli was died off more than 90% during pumping and recharge rate kept at 10 mL/min. However, when the rates of both recharge and pumping was kept at 5 mL/min, Enterococcus faecalis / Escherichia coli was sustained in the range of 2.5$\sim$5.0, while Escherichia coli showed dimished death rate. Chemical factors such as Cl$^-$, Ca$^{2+}$, Mg$^{2+}$ and specific conductivity showed more than 0.9 of high correlation each other well explaining the degree of seawater intrusion. The degree of ion exchange between artificial aquifer and saline water can be efficiently interpreted by both minus $\Delta$Na, $\Delta$Mg variation and positive $\Delta$Ca variation.

  • Micro plot study was conducted to elucidate the behavior of nitrogen derived from animal manure in soil and to obtain the fundamental information on animal waste management. Soils used in this experiment were sandy loam and loam. Soil water samplers (1m length ceramic cup tube) were installed at 90cm depth of soil to collect the percolate. Fresh and fermented pig manure were applied at the rate of 0, 50, 100 ton per ha. Maize was grown to evaluate the effect of crop on nitrogen behavior through soil profile. Concentration of nitrate nitrogen in percolate increased by application of pig manure. This trend was more obvious at the loam with fermented pig manure than sandy loam with fresh pig manure treatment. The concentration of nitrate nitrogen was lower under the maize cultivation than bare soil condition by 64.6-68.9%. Concentration of Ca, Mg and Na of soil and percolate increased as nitrate nitrogen concentration increased. The equivalent ratio of cation to nitrate nitrogen of percolate was increased by application of pig manure. This result showed that canon leaching was accompanied by nitrate nitrogen. Concentration of nitrate nitrogen of subsurface soil was increased by pig manure application.

  • In this study, the data that examined the chloride ion concentration of ground water wells in the west coast of Jeollabukdo applying the GIS spatial estimation method were analyzed. In particular, through the designation of a validation point among ground water wells and then the analysis of error characteristics of the chloride ion concentration by each method of IDW (Inverse Distance Weight), Spline, and Kriging Interpolation method which is proper for estimating salt water intrusion was selected. The main conclusion from this study is as follows. First, as a result of analyzing the error characteristics of various spatial estimation methods by using the data from the chloride ion concentration of 485 ground water wells, the IDW method was found to be the most appropriate for estimating chloride ion concentration by salt water intrusion. Second, analyzing the average chloride ion concentration of the targeted regions has revealed that Gunsan-si with the record of $541mg/{\ell}$ did not meet water quality standards even for industrial use. Both Gimje-si and Gochang-gun satisfied drinking water quality standards and Buan-gun with $272mg/{\ell}$ was slightly below the standards for drinking water. Third, concerning the results of analysis according to administrative districts, as the areas adjacent to the west coast such as Daemyeong-dong, Joong-dong, Jangjae-dong and Guemam-dong in Gunsan-si are found to have very high chloride ion concentration, and both Hoehyeon-myeon and Daeya-myeon bounded by the Mankeong river did not meet water quality standards even for industrial use. From these facts, it is concluded that salt water intrusion has a great effect on Gunsan-si generally.

  • Recently, the corrosion of reinforced concrete structures has received great attention related with the deterioration of sea-side structures, such as new airport, bridges, and nuclear power plants. In this regards, many studies have been done on the chloride attack in concrete structures. However, those studies were confined mostly to the single deterioration due to chloride only, although actual environment is rather of combined type. The purpose of the present study is, therefore, to explore the influences of carbonation to chloride attack in concrete structures. The test results indicate that the chloride penetration is more pronounced than the case of single chloride attack when the carbonation process is combined with the chloride attack. It is supposed that the chloride ion concentration of carbonation region is higher than the sound region because of the separation of fixed salts. Though the use of fly ash pronounces the chloride ion concentration in surface, amounts of chloride ion penetration into deep region decreases with the use of fly ash. The present study allows more realistic assessment of durability for such concrete structures which are subjected to combined attacks of both chlorides and carbonation but the future studies for combined environment will assure the precise assessment.

  • Boron penetration phenomenon of $p^{+}$ silicon gate with as-deposited amorphous or polycrystalline Si upon high temperature annealing was investigated using high frequency C-V (Capacitance-Volt-age) analysis, CCST(Constant Current Stress Test), TEM(Transmission Electron Microscopy) and SIMS(Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy), C-V analysis showed that an as-deposited amorphous Si gate resulted in smaller positive shifts in flatband voltage compared wish a polycrystalline Si gate, thus giving 60-80 percent higher charge-to-breakdown of gate oxides. The reduced boron penetration of amorphous Si gate may be attributed to the fewer grain boundaries available for boron diffusion into the gate oxide and the shallower projected range of $BF_2$ implantation. The relation between electron trapping rate and flatband voltage shift was also discussed.

  • The purpose of this experimental research is to evaluate the resistance of reinforcement corrosion and chloride ion penetration of high volume fly ash (HVFA) concrete. For this purpose, concrete test specimens were made for various strength level and replacement ratio of fly ash, and then compressive strength and diffusion coefficient for chloride ion of them were measured for 28, 91 and 182 days, respectively. Also, corrosion monitoring by half cell potential method was carried out for the made lollypop concrete test specimens to detect the time of corrosion initiation for reinforcement in concrete. As a result, it was observed from the test results that compressive strength of HVFA concrete was decreased with increasing replacement ratio of fly ash but long-term resistance against reinforcement corrosion and chloride ion penetration of that was increased.
