Characteristics of Nutrients Distribution in Summer and Winter in the South Sea (여름과 겨울철 남해의 영양염 분포 특성)

  • This paper presents the results of recent nutrients measurement and analysis in relation to other environmental parameters such as temperature, salinity, AOU and pH in the South Sea, Korea. In summer, temperature showed stronger correlation with nutrients than salinity and also did the parameters related to biological activities such as pH and AOU. Implications of above results exemplify that primary producers in the vicinity of salt front actively consumed nutrients so that nutrients-salinity correlation is strongly modified in the salt front. Nutrient in winter showed significant correlation only with temperature. Nutrient distribution seems governed by the location of thermal front between vertically mixed cold water in northern area and warm waters flowing north. Due to weak biological activity in winter pH-nutrients correlation, which was strongest in summer ($R^2$ >0.6) dropped sharply in winter ($R^2$ <0.5). Depth integrated nitrate+nitrite, phosphate and silicate values are 321 $mmol{\cdot}m^{-2}$, 23 $mmol{\cdot}m^{-2}$, 637 $mmol{\cdot}m^{-2}$ in summer and 261 $mmol{\cdot}m^{-2}$, 31 $mmol{\cdot}m^{-2}$, 742 $mmol{\cdot}m^{-2}$ in winter, respectively. NIP values in summer exhibit phosphorus deficiency, however, winter situation is reversed for nitrogen. Nitrogen input via precipitation and riverine discharge in wet season seems potentially critical for maintaining the South Sea ecosystem.

Surface Complexation Modeling of Cadmium Sorption onto Synthetic Goethite and Quartz (표면착물 모델을 이용한 합성 침철광과 석영의 카드뮴 흡착 모사)

  • An alternative method to the empirical approach such as Langmuir and Freundlich model, surface complexation model using thermodynamic database is used to simulate adsorption behavior of cadmium for oxide minerals. Sorption of cadmium onto amorphous silica ($SiO_2$) and synthetic goethite (${\alpha}$-FeOOH) at various conditions of pH, initial cadmium loading, oxide concentration, and ionic strength, were investigated. For both oxide minerals, increasing cadmium concentration resulted in right shifting of the sorption curve of cadmium as the function of pH. The $pH_{50}$, where 50% of cadmium sorbed, of goethite (pH 5.25) was much smaller than that of the silica (pH 7.83). The sorption of cadmium onto both minerals were not affected by the background ion strength from $10^{-1}$ to $10^{-2}$ M of $KNO_3$. It indicated that the binding affinity of goethite surface for cadmium is much stronger than that of silica. The strong affinity of oxide mineral for cadmium can be explained by the existence of coordination or covalent bond between cadmium and surface of it.

  • 경기도 용인시, 오산시와 화성시 지역의 농업용수와 공업용수의 공급원으로 이용되고 있는 신갈호는 현재 유입하천으로부터 미처리된 도시하수, 공장 폐수, 축산 폐수 등의 점오염원 및 도시 지역 불투수층에 쌓여있는 오염물질인 비점오염원이 무분별하게 유입되어 수질이 매우 악화되어 용수로의 사용이 어려운 지경에 달하였으며, 자연정화능력도 감소하는 등 심각하게 오염되었다. 또한 최근에는 신갈호 유역의 개발에 따른 토지이용 변화로 신갈호 유역의 총오염부하량이 증가하고 있는 실정이다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 현재 날로 심각해지는 신갈호 유입하천의 비점오염원 조사를 통해 신갈호 및 유입하천의 기초데이터의 확충 및 현황 파악을 하고자 하였다. 본 연구에서는 강우 시 신갈호로 유입되는 3개의 유입지천인 신갈천(SG), 지곡천(JK), 공세천(KS)에서 비점오염부하량을 산정함으로써 강우 시 호소로 유입되는 총오염부하량 및 비점오부하량의 비율을 알아보고자 하였다. 강우사상에 따른 총 오염물질 부하량은 EMC 농도를 구한 후 총 유출유량을 곱하고 총 강우지속시간을 곱하여 산정하였다. 조사결과 강우기에 있어서 거의 모든 항목의 농도는 평수기보다 매우 높은 수치를 나타냈다. 특히 SS 농도는 토사의 하천유입으로 인해 다른인자에 비해 큰 변동폭을 나타내었으며, COD와 T-P는 토양입자에 흡착되어 함께 이동하기 때문에 SS와 밀접한 관계를 가졌다. 강우시의 각 유입하천별 오염부하 기여율은 SG의 경우 SS 74.1%, BOD 64.4%, COD 65.7%, T-N 63.8%, T-P 73.8%를 나타내었다. JK의 경우 SS 25.4%, BOD 31.5%, COD 30.5%, T-N 32.5%, T-P 24.2% 였고, KS의 경우 SS 0.5%, BOD 4.1%, COD 3.8%, T-N 3.7%, T-P 2.0%를 나타내었다. 강우시의 각 유입하천별 오염부하 기여율을 평수기때의 오염부하 기여율과 비교하였다. 비교결과 SS의 경우는 SG가 강우시에 74%, 평수기에 83%, BOD의 경우는 강우시 64%, 평수기 80%, T-N은 강우시 64%, 평수기에 84%, T-P의 경우는 강우시 74%, 평수기에 82%로 모든 항목에서 평수기에 신갈천이 신갈호의 오염부하에 미치는 영향이 큰 것으로 나타났는데, 이는 강우시 지곡천의 기여율이 평수기 보다 상대적으로 높아지기 때문인 것으로 판단된다.

Anti-inflammatory effects of Sparassis crispa extracts (꽃송이버섯 추출물의 항염활성 효과)

  • Sparassis crispa is a medicinal mushroom, which has been reported to have anti-cancer effect. In this study, we designed to investigate the effects of Sparassis crispa extracts on the production of nitric oxide (NO) in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells. The pre-treatment of the extracts prior to add LPS in RAW264.7 cells suppressed NO production and iNOS expression at protein and mRNA levels. The phosphorylation of $I{\kappa}B{\alpha}$ was inhibited by the extracts, which was induced through suppressing the activation of $NF-{\kappa}B$. Sparassis crispa extracts showed the effect on the down-regulation of STAT-1 activation in a dose-dependent manner. In LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells, $NF-{\kappa}B$ was translocated into the nucleus, while the treatment of Sparassis crispa extracts induced to sequestered $NF-{\kappa}B$ in the cytosol. These experimental results determined that Sparassis crispa extracts play a inhibitory role in inflammatory reactions via regulating NO production, which suggests potential as a component of inflammatory drugs.

Non-Local Plasticity Constitutive Relation for Particulate Composite Material Using Combined Back-Stress Model and Shear Band Formation (비국부 이론을 이용한 입자 강화 복합재 이중후방응력 소성 구성방정식 모델 및 전단밴드 분석)

  • This paper proposes elastic-plastic constitutive relations for a composite material with two phases-inclusion and matrix phases-using a homogenization scheme. A thermodynamic framework is employed to develop non-local plasticity constitutive relations, which are specifically represented in terms of the second-order gradient terms of the internal state variables. A combined two back-stress evolution equation is also established and the degradation of the state and internal variables is expressed by continuum damage mechanics in terms of the damage factor. Then, deformation localization is analyzed; the analysis results show that the proposed model yields a wide range of shear band formation behaviors depending on the evolution of the specific internal state variables. The analysis results also show good agreement with the results of simplified Rice instability analyses.

  • A social phobia is an anxiety disorder characterized by extreme fear and phobic avoidance of social and performance situations. Medications or cognitive-behavior methods have been mainly used in treating it. These methods have some shortcomings such as being inefficient and difficult to apply to treatment. Lately the virtual rcality technology has been applied to dcal with the anxiety disorders in order to compcnsate for these defects. A virtual environment provides a patient with stimuli which cvokes a phobia. and the patient's exposure to the virtual phobic situation make him be able to overcome it. In this study, we suggested the public speaking simulator based on a personal computer for the treatment of social phobia. The public speaking simulator was composed of a position sensor. head mount display and audio system. And a virtual environment for the treatment was suggested to be a seminar room where 8 avatars are sitting. The virtual environment includes a tracking system the trace a participant's head-movement using a HMD with position sensor and 3D sound is added to the virtual environment so that he might fcel it realistic. We also made avatars' motion and facial expression change in reaction to a participant's speech. The goal of developing public speaking simulator is to apply to treat fear of public speaking efficiently and economically. In a future study. we should get more information about immergence and treatment efficiency by clinical test and apply it to this simulator.

Survey on Pest Management Practice and Scheme of Increasing Income in Sweet Persimmon Farms in Korea (단감원의 병해충 관리 실태와 소득 증대 방안에 대한 농가 의식조사)

  • As a series of studies to develop pest management system for sweet persimmon production matched with the quarantine criterion of sweet persimmon-imported county, a survey was conducted by questionnaire on pest management practice and scheme of increasing income in sweet persimmon farms in Korea. Above 80% of sweet persimmon farmers was over fifties in age. The greatest limiting factor for sweet persimmon production was thought to be disease by the farmers. Percentage of farmers who answered that the most important pest is anthracnose cause by Gloeosporium kaki, and stink bugs was 64.6% and 73.5%, respectively. In particular, the farmers did not consider Dichocrocis punctiferalis, a main targer insect for quarantine in USA, as serious problem. Obtaining information on pest management practice or decision-making on both selection of pesticide and time of pesticide application depended highly on their own experience with the highest proportion. Eight to nine times of pesticide applications a year was highest among farms with 56.6%. More than 80% of farmers recorded the diary of pesticide application. farmers considered increasing cost for pest management as the greatest problem with 35.4% in proportion, and 34.5% of farmers pointed out that increase in export is essential for increasing farm income with highest proportion.

Carotid Intima-Media Thickness Measurement in Obese Children (비만 소아들에서의 경동맥 내막중막 두께 측정)

  • Purpose : The aim of the present study was to ascertain whether the increase of carotid intima-media thickeness(cIMT) as one of premature pathologic changes of atherosclerosis, was present in obese children compared to normal weight children. Methods : The obese group consisted of 21 obese/overweight(body mass index(BMI) above 85 percentile of age, sex standards) children and the control group of 11 normal weight children. None of the children had any chronic illnesses or previous medication history. We investigated the age, sex, height, weight, and systolic/diastolic blood pressure. We measured cIMT by ultrasonogram. In 19 of the obese group, we tested the serum glucose level, liver transaminase level, and cholesterol level etc. Results : The increase of cIMT in obese group did not achieved statistical significance(obese group vs. control group; 0.42 vs. 0.40 mm, P=0.0592). In addition, cIMT showed no significant correlation with any physical/laboratory variables including BMI(P=0.0585). Conclusion : To our knowledge, this is the first study to measure the cIMT in Korean children. Though the results approached statistical significance, we could not prove an increase of cIMT in obese children or an association between cIMT and BMI, due to the study's small sample size. In the future, larger and more extensive trials are needed.

A study on evacuation characteristic by cross-sectional areas and smoke control velocity at railway tunnel fire (철도터널 화재시 단면적별 제연풍속에 따른 대피특성 연구)

  • In this study, with variables the cross section area ($97m^2$, $58m^2$, $38m^2$) and the wind velocity(0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 3.5 m/s), the time of getting off train dependent on the way of itself and the width of the evacuation route was analyzed, and also fire and evacuation characteristics is reviewed by cross section area of each wind velocity. As the result, if cross section become smaller, the density of harmful gases in the tunnel increased more than the ratio of decreasing cross section area. In the case of small cross sectional area, the surrounding environment from initial fire is indicated to exceed the limit criteria suggested in performance based design. In the analysis of effective evacuation time for evacuation characteristics, the effective evacuation time was the shortest in the case of evaluating effective evacuation time by the visibility. Also, there was significant difference between the effective evacuation time on the basis of performance based evaluation and the effective evacuation time obtained by analyzing FED (Fractional effective dose), one of the analysis method obtaining the point that deaths occur, against harmful gases.

Cell Biological Function of Secretome of Adipose-Derived Stem Cells on Human Dermal Fibroblasts and Keratinocytes (인체 섬유아세포 및 케라티노사이트에 대한 지방줄기세포 분비물의 세포생물학적 기능)

  • The beneficial effects of adipose-derived stem cell conditioned media (ADSC-CM) for skin regeneration have previously been reported, despite the precise mechanism of how ADSC-CM promotes skin regeneration remaining unclear. ADSC-CM contains various secretomes and this may be a factor in it being a good resource for the treatment of skin conditions. It is also known that ADSC-CM produced in hypoxia conditions, in other words Advanced Adipose-Derived Stem cell Protein Extract (AAPE), has excellent skin regenerative properties. In this study, a human primary skin cell was devised to examine how AAPE affects human dermal fibroblast (HDF) and human keratinocyte (HK), which both play fundamental roles in skin regeneration. The promotion of collagen formation by HDFs was observed at 0.32 mg/ml of AAPE. AAPE treatment significantly stimulated stress fiber formation. DNA gene chips demonstrated that AAPE in HKs (p<0.05) affected the expression of 133 identifiable transcripts, which were associated with cell proliferation, migration, cell adhesion, and response to wounding. Twenty five identified proteins, including MMP, growth factor and cytokines such as CD54, FGF-2, GM-CSF, IL-4, IL-6, VEGF, TGF-${\beta}2$, TGF-${\beta}3$, MMP-1, MMP-10, and MMP-19, were contained in AAPE via antibody arrays. Thus, AAPE might activate the HK biological function and induce the collagen synthesis of HDF. These results demonstrate that AAPE has the potential to be used for clinic applications aimed at skin regeneration.
