Tile purposes of this study were to find out any significant relations among body image, needs for body modification, self concept, and some selected clothing behaviors of two age group females using social comparison theory as the research background. The sampling method was a convenient sampling, and the subjects were 56 females aged from 20 to 24 years and 54 females aged from 40 to 49 years. The quasi-experiment and survey were conducted from May 1 to June 30, 2002. The results of tile study were as follows. First, the perceptual body image is more important than measured body size and ideal body size in body image. Apart from measurement instrument, people who perceived slim had higher self concept, exhibition and conformity of clothing. Second, there were significant differences between the two age groups(twenties and forties) in needs for plastic modification, self concepts and clothing behaviors. The younger age group exhibited higher need for modification than the older age group and the younger group also showed higher self concept, higher interests in clothing and fashion, more exhibition tendency and conformity to clothing.
The purpose of this study was to segment Chinese career women by experience in purchasing Korean clothing and to analyze and compare clothing purchasing behavior between the 2 groups and to provide useful information to Korean manufacturers for establishment of marketing strategies for China. The subjects were 602 career women of middle and high class In their 20's and 30's. A total of 602 questionnaires were analyzed by using frequency, mean, Cronbach's $\alpha$, factor analysis, t-test and $X^2$-analysis. The results were as follows: 1. The demographic variables such as an age, residential city, marriage, and total monthly income were proven to be significantly different between the 2 groups except an academic background. 2. The clothing purchase behavior variables such as purchasing motive, using informants, clothing selection standards, store selection standards, purchasing place, satisfaction after purchasing clothes, shopping time, average monthly expenditure on clothing, purchasing frequency of casual wear, purchasing price, and paying method were proven to be significantly different between the 2 groups. However, the clothing purchase behavior variables such as purchasing frequency of formal wear and purchasing price of fur coat and sweater were proven not to be significantly different between the 2 groups.
The purpose of this study was to examine clothing purchase behavior of sports participants based on outdoor sports types and sports participation motivation. The research was conducted with the use of a self-administered questionnaire. A total of 703 respondents between the ages of 25 and 55 participated in the research through an internet survey. Motivation for participation in particular sports was comprised of four factors: impress others, mental rejuvenation, social interaction, and health maintenance/improvement. Perceived benefits of clothing choice were categorized into three factors: brand/fashion pursuit, positive image pursuit, and practicality pursuit. Outdoor sports activities was categorized into six types, climbing, jogging, cycling, fishing, golf, and others including ball games. Each sports group presented differences in demographics, sports motivation factors, and benefit factors. Four segments were identified based on sports participation motivation: active group, social group, health and revitalization group, and inactive group. The active group considered three clothing benefits and 14 evaluative criteria as being the most important among the four segments, indicating the major target market for outdoor sportswear brands. On the other hand, the members of inactive group showed passive attitudes toward clothing purchasing behaviors. This study discusses the results of this research within the context of the managerial implication for outdoor sports marketers.
The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of make-up attitude and body-related value on clothing behavior. The subjects were 315 female college students in Gyeongsang provinces. The obtained data were analyzed by reliability analysis, factor analysis, cluster analysis, one-way ANOVA, Duncan's multiple range test, correlation analysis, multiple regression analysis and t-test. The major results of this study were as follows: First, four factors of make-up attitude were identified: pursuit of confidence, sociality, self-satisfaction, and positive image. Second, the subjects were categorized into three different types of groups according to make-up attitude and body-related value, respectively: high involvement type, low involvement type, and middle involvement type. Third, there was significant difference among three groups which were segmented by each make-up attitude and body-related value on clothing behaviors (sexual attractiveness, showing off, body-enhancement). Fourth, a significant positive correlation was found among four factors of make-up attitude and body operatability with clothing behaviors. Fifth, the important variables that affected the clothing behaviors were pursuit of confidence, self-satisfaction, and positive image of make-up attitude. Sixth, body-inclination significantly influenced sexual attractiveness of clothing behavior, whereas body-related value, unlike make-up attitude, only had marginal influence.
This study investigated how experience of creative dressing tasks influences consumers' perceptions and behavior towards clothing consumption. Consumer creativity can solve several problems in consumption practices; however, few studies have analyzed it in the consumption context. This study adopted an action research method so that consumers could experience creative clothing consumption in their daily lives. In-depth interviews and participant observations were conducted on eight adults in their 20s and 30s. Participants had to dress creatively 10 times and recorded their creative fashion styles, the ideas they used, and their feelings during the tasks in a consumer diary. The main results were as follows. Participants regarded the meaning of creative dressing as a 'visually novel, transformative, and hiding the physical flaws'. Based on these characteristics of creative dressing, they showed many creative ideas by expanding the product usages or varying coordination among the fashion items. As a result of the task experience, participants became aware their stagnant fashion style and reflected on shopping habits and low clothing usage-efficiency. This study is meaningful in that it systematically explored creative clothing consumption behavior step by step from a consumer perspective.
This study examined the relationships between clothing values, wearing behaviors and the attitudes toward underwear for female students. A survey of female middle and high school students was conducted. 584 questionnaires, collected from April to May, 2009, were analyzed using descriptive statistics, cross tabulation analysis, t-test, factor analysis, and Pearson's correlation coefficient. Economic and aesthetic value were found to be significantly higher than other clothing values amongst older students while students in coeducational schools regarded aesthetic properties of clothing as being more important (p<.05). Girl students' most pursued attitudes toward underwear was modesty. According to age of students and the type of school they attended there were significant differences in students' underwear wearing behaviors. A high level of correlation between clothing values and attitudes toward underwear was found. Aesthetic value out of the clothing values showed a high correlation with esthetics/sexual attractiveness out of the attitudes toward underwear. Aesthetics/sexual attractiveness out of the attitudes toward underwear was shown to be most influential on underwear wearing behaviors. There would be a necessity for emphasizing the wearing of girdle and slip.
The Effects of Self-Esteem and Sociocultural Attitude toward Appearance on Clothing Behavior. The purpose of this study was to investigate to relation between self-esteem and sociocultural attitude toward appearance and clothing behavior i.e. individuality/self expression, body improvement, social approval, sex appeal. Measurements were included Rosenberg's self-esteem, Thompson's sociocultural attitude toward appearance questionnaire and clothing behavior. The data were collected from 498 female university students in Seoul and Kyongki Province. The collection works were undertaken between the 15th of June and 30th of June, 2001, The data were analyzed using factor analysis, reliability test, analysis of variance, and multiple regression analysis. The results of this study were as follows : 1) Three dimensions of sociocultural attitude toward appearance were identified: internalization, social awareness, and concrete awareness. 2) Self-esteem and internalization of sociocultural attitude toward appearance had an effect on clothing behavior i.e. individuality/self expression, body improvement, social approval and sex appeal. Social awareness of sociocultural attitude toward appearance had an effect on body improvement, social approval, and sex appeal.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between life style and clothing purchase intention and purchase criteria in internet shopping-mall of male and female consumers. The subjects were 275 internet users (male: 164, female: 111). The results of the study were as follows. Five factors of life style derived by factor analysis:'Digital Orientation','Economy Orientation','Positive Activity','Fun Orientation', and'Home Orientation'. The dress types to be based on the purchase intention in internet shopping-mall was classified into four dimensions by factor analysis: Casual Wears & Single Item Clothes','Formal Wears','Miscellaneous Goods', and'Underwears & Night Clothes'. Internet users showed relatively high purchase intention in casual wears & single item clothes and miscellaneous goods. Clothing purchase intention in internet shopping correlated significantly with home orientation in males, and with digital orientation in females. Subjects high in fun orientation placed importance on design as clothing purchase criteria. Males high in positive activity placed importance on price, color, sewing, brand, and wearing appearance. Females high in digital orientation believed design, color, material, refundment condition, and fashionability were important as purchase criteria. The level of digital orientation of dress purchasers in internet shopping-mall was higher than that of non-purchasers in case of males, and that of fun orientation was higher than that of non-purchasers in case of females. The present findings suggest that life style such as digital orientation and home orientation appeared to be important in predicting the clothing purchase intention in internet shopping mall.
The purposes of this study were to identify the Chinese university students' clothing attitudes and purchasing behavior according to their lifestyle. Questionnaires developed by researcher were distributed and collected from 540 Chinese university students from Mar. 5 to Mar. 20, 2001. Means, frequencies, and percentages were calculated. Factor analysis, cluster analysis. one-way ANOVA, and Chi-square test were used for data analysis. And Duncan's multiple range test was followed. The factors of lifestyle were consumption, self-confidence, economy, accomplishment. sociability. fashionability, individuality, and conservation. Chinese university students were segmented into 4 groups of the modern sociable, the passive stagnated, the positive progresive, and the traditional conservative. The group size of the modem sociable was the smallest, and the traditional conservative was the largest. Chinese university students considered sexual attractiveness of clothing most important. Psychological dependence and ostentation of clothing were next important in a decending order. The passive stagnated considered conformity of clothing most important and showed the opposite tendency of the modern socialable. The positive progressive considered all aspects of clothing attitudes important, and showed the opposite tendency of the traditional conservative. Chinese university students utilized direct fashion information sources, and patronized medium or small size department store or traditional market.
This study investigates clothing consumption behavior of fast fashion purchasers according to environmental consciousness. Questionnaire examined 245 males and females in Busan who experienced fast fashion product purchases. Data were analyzed using factor analysis, t-test. ANOVA, Duncan Test and ${\chi}^{2}-test$. The results are as follows. First, the result showed significant differences in environmental consciousness education according to demographic characteristics. Second, the results showed significant differences in the hedonic pursuit of purchase motivation for fast fashion products according to environmental consciousness. The low environmental awareness group pursued hedonic purchases towards the purchase motivation of fast fashion products. The results showed significant differences in fast fashion disposal behavior according to environmental consciousness; however, not for the disposal motivation of fast fashion. In the disposal behavior of fast fashion, the high environmental awareness group indicated social friendly disposal and the middle environmental awareness group indicated economical disposal. The result showed significant gender differences towards clothing consumption behavior of fast fashion according to demographic characteristics. Males and females showed significant differences in all purchase motivation factor for fast fashion products. They also showed significant differences in economical disposal towards fast fashion disposal behavior.
