  • This study focuses on the emergence of collective intelligence and its impact on the democracy in the information era. Scholars have posed very different-optimistic and pessimistic-views on the possibility of collective knowledge produced by the public. Focusing on the cases of a free online encylopedia known as wikipedia and 2008 Candlelight Demonstration against the imports of US beef in Korea, this paper analyzes the mechanism of collective intelligence and its political implications on the democracy. Specifically, this article approaches changes in new knowledge paradigm with two different variables: the degree of connectivity and the quality of deliberation. Applying two different sets of variables helps us to distinguish the possibilities of collective intelligence and anti-intelligence, which would suggest social and political implications for the democracy in a country. This study finds a critical difference in terms of the quality of deliberation, measured by the indicators such as diversity, independence, and integration mechanism for online deliberation.

Agent Communication with Multiple Ontologies (다중온톨로지의 에이전트 통신)

  • In this paper, we discuss how ontology Plays roles in building a distributed and heterogeneous knowledge-base system. First, we discuss relationship between ontology and agent in the Knowledgeable Community which is a framework of knowledge sharing and reuse based on a multi-agent architecture. Ontology is a minimum requirement for each agent to join the Knowledgeable Community. Second we explain mediation by ontology to show how ontology is used in the Knowledgeable Community. A special agent called mediation analyzes undirected messages and infer candidates of recipient agents by consulting ontology and relationship between ontology and agents. Third we model ontology as combination of aspects each of which can represent a way of conceptualization. Aspects are combined either as combination aspect which means integration of aspects or category aspect which means choice of aspects. Since ontology by aspect allows heterogeneous and multiple descriptions for phenomenon in the world, it is appropriate for heterogeneous knowledge-base systems. We also show translation of messages as a wave of interpreting multiple aspects. A translation agent can translate a message with some aspect to one with another aspect by analyzing dependency of aspects. Mediation and translation of messages are important to build agents easily and naturally because less knowledge on other agents is requested for each agent.

  • Wrappers play an important role in extracting specified information from various sources. Wrapper rules by which information is extracted are often created from the domain-specific knowledge. Domain-specific knowledge helps recognizing the meaning the text representing various entities and values and detecting their formats However, such domain knowledge becomes powerless when value-representing data are not labeled with appropriate textual descriptions or there is nothing but a hyper link when certain text labels or values are expected. In order to alleviate these problems, we propose a probabilistic method for recognizing the entity type, i.e. generating wrapper rules, when there is no label associated with value-representing text. In addition, we have devised a method for using the information reachable by following hyperlinks when textual data are not immediately available on the target web page. Our experimental work shows that the proposed methods help increasing precision of the resulting wrapper, particularly extracting the title information, the most important entity on a web page. The proposed methods can be useful in making a more efficient and correct information extraction system for various sources of information without user intervention.

An Epistemology of Geomorphology and An Ontological Approach to Geomorphology Education (지형 지식의 인식론적 특성과 존재론적 지형 교육)

  • The purpose of this paper is to suggest a particular approach to geomorphology education based on an epistemology (anti-realist of geomorphology knowledge. Anti-realist epistemology of geomorphology may be characterized by the belief that (1) geomorphology knowledge is made or constructed rather than discovered, (2) knowledge construction begins with the perception of meaningfulness of the landform, and (3) it means recognizing the given land in terms of shape or form; (4) the construction is, in other words, a subjective or inter-subjective interpretation by the perceivers; (5) knowledge develops along with the hermeneutic circles. Aims of geomorphology education according to this epistemology, may be (1) to have children not so much construct geomorphology knowledge as live the very construction, (2) to have children maintain an enduring interest in their surrounding landform, and (3) to have them appreciate the intimate connections between the landform of a region and the modes of living in that region. In short, aims of geomorphology education may have to be ontological, i.c., to have children engaged in the understanding as a process of living rather than for the resulting knowledge.

  • For Knowledge Information Governance, integration search mechanism of Knowledge Information is required in various industries. But when Knowledge Information system constructs in each professional field, it developed and used its own metadata format. Accordingly, if distributed information system searches using metadata, heterogeneous problems are occurred among metadata. For integration search, it needs a consistency management of metadata. Therefore, this paper defines a standard metadata that represent standard metadata as surveying a used metadata in each field systems. Also, we propose a metadata registry integration framework for Knowledge Information Governance. It enables an integration search service without a metadata modification of existing system. Through the proposed framework, it can registries and manages efficiently the existing metadata. Also, it enables a semantically extended search using semantic relation between metadata.

Knowledge Trend Analysis of Uncertainty in Biomedical Scientific Literature (생의학 학술 문헌의 불확실성 기반 지식 동향 분석에 관한 연구)

  • Uncertainty means incomplete stages of knowledge of propositions due to the lack of consensus of information and existing knowledge. As the amount of academic literature increases exponentially over time, new knowledge is discovered as research develops. Although the flow of time may be an important factor to identify patterns of uncertainty in scientific knowledge, existing studies have only identified the nature of uncertainty based on the frequency in a particular discipline, and they did not take into consideration of the flow of time. Therefore, in this study, we identify and analyze the uncertainty words that indicate uncertainty in the scientific literature and investigate the stream of knowledge. We examine the pattern of biomedical knowledge such as representative entity pairs, predicate types, and entities over time. We also perform the significance testing using linear regression analysis. Seven pairs out of 17 entity pairs show the significant decrease pattern statistically and all 10 representative predicates decrease significantly over time. We analyze the relative importance of representative entities by year and identify entities that display a significant rising and falling pattern.

  • 샤모아 프레임워크(Chamois Framework)는 독특한 컴포넌트를 지니고 있는 새로운 지식공학 프레임 워크이다. 이러한 대용량의 데이터 소스로부터 의미 있는 지식을 추출하는 지식공학 시스템에서 소스 데이터의 품질을 보장하는 일은 매우 중요하다. 본 논문에서는 데이터의 품질 측정 도구인 DAQUM(DAta OUality Measurement) 컴포넌트의 설계 및 구현에 관한 주요 내용을 기술하고, 컴포넌트 기반의 구조를 가지는 샤모아 프레임워크에서 DAQUM의 역할 및 동작에 대해 기술한다.
