Comparison of Electrocoagulation and Chemical Coagulation in Removal on Water Treatment (정수처리에서 전기응집과 화학응집의 처리효율 비교)

  • Electrocoagulation has been suggested as a promising alternative to conventional coagulation. The process is characterized by reduced sludge production, no requirement for chemical use, and ease of operation. However, this coagulation has scarcely been studied in water purifying process. This study was performed several batch experiments to compare turbidity removal between electrocoagulation and chemical coagulation. In addition, characteristics of floe were evaluated with zeta potential and particle size distributions. Electrocoagulation showed a relatively higher removal of turbidity (approximately 5%) with the same aluminum amount than conventional chemical coagulation. In addition, turbidity removal by electrocoagulation was less sensitive to pH and was greater for more extensive pH range than chemical coagulation. The results of zeta potential and floc size distributions illustrated that electrocoagulation provided the preferable conditions for coagulation such as zeta potential close to zero millivolt and increased portions of particles in the range of 40 and $100{\mu}m$.

  • 대부분의 경우에 하구의 미세-점착성 퇴적물은 보통 무기성 광물과 유기물 및 생화학물의 혼합체이며, 광물 입자들은 주로 점토와 실트로 구성되어 있다. 이러한 혼합체의 침식특성은 사질성 퇴적물과는 달리 입자간의 응집현상에 의한 의해 크게 영향을 받으며, 응집강도는 광물질 구성, 입경분포, 유기물 함량 등으로 묘사되는 퇴적물 자체의 물리ㆍ화학적 기본특성에 따라 크게 변화하고 (Mea, 1986), 특히 저면 퇴적물의 침식 여부는 흐름 전단응력에 의한 저면퇴적물의 저항력 즉, 저면전단강도의 상대적 크기의 차이에 좌우되므로, 그 침식 특성은 저면전단강도 흑은 저면밀도로 묘사되는 저면특성에 따라 크게 변화한다(황규남 등, 2003). 또한 각 해역마다 저면 퇴적물은 퇴적물 공급원, 수동학적 조건, 생태학적 조건 등이 모두 다른 상태에서 형성된 퇴적층이므로, 저면 퇴적물의 기본특성 및 저면특성은 "site- specific" 한 성격을 갖는다. Prediction of the Mechanical Erosion Rate Decrement for Carbon-Composite Nozzle by using the Nano-Size Additive Aluminum Particle (나노 알루미늄 입자 첨가 추진제에 의한 탄소복합재 노즐의 기계적 삭마 감소 특성 예측)

  • In this study, the influence of Al particle size, as an additive for solid propellant, on the mechanical erosion of the carbon-composite nozzle was evaluated. A new model which can predict the size and distribution of the agglomerated reaction product($Al(l)/Al_2O_3(l)$) was established, and the size of agglomerate were calculated according to the various initial size of Al in the solid propellant. With predicted results of the model, subsequently, the characteristics of mechanical erosion on the carbon-composite nozzle was estimated using a commercial CFD software, STAR CCM+. The result shows that the smaller the initial Al particles are, in the solid propellant, the lower is the mechanical erosion rate of the composite nozzle wall, especially for the nano-size Al particle.

  • The texture profile of frankfurter sausages was carried out by comparing the domestic(A) and imported(B) products. Fourteen character notes were identified: elasticity, surface moisture, surface smoothness, center hardness, skin toughness, cohesiveness, denseness, chewiness, moisture release, cohesiveness of mass, lumpiness, graininess, skin separation, and oiliness. Reference scales and the $0{\sim}3$ point numerical scaling method were also established. Panelists evaluated sausage A harder than the sausage B. It had higher skin separation and elasticity scores requring more chewing. Sausage B had lower surface moisture and cohesiveness of mass, but higher moisture release and graininess. Panelists commented that the sausage B were oilier but had milder tastes.

  • Polyamine type polymer flocculants were synthesized and their characterization, viscosity and flocculation studies were conducted. In order to increase the molecular weight of polyamine flocculant which was prepared by polycondensation reaction from dimethylamine and epichlorohydrin, a small amount of 1,6-hexanediamine was employed. The incorporation of 1,6-hexanediamine up to 5.5 mole % replacing corresponding part of dimethylamine gave a branched type polyamine sample with increased intrinsic viscosity ([${\eta}$]=0.46 in 1 wt % aqueous NaCl solution). The amount of 1,6-hexanediamine above 5.5 mole %, however, resulted in gelation during polymerization. Utilizing raw water from Maegok potable water treatment plant, it was found that the addition of polyamine flocculant at a concentration of 1 mg/L level could reduce the amount of polyaluminum chloride (PAC) inorganic flocculant by half (15 mg/L). It was also observed that the incoporation of polyamine flocculant at 1 mg/L level was effective in the higher pH raw water, while PAC inorganic flocculating agent alone was not effective.

Preparation and Characterisation of Titanium Dioxide Produced from Ti-salt Flocculated Sludge in Water Treatment (수처리 티탄염 응집 슬러지에서 생산한 산화티탄의 제조와 특성 조사)

  • During the past few years, titanium salts were investigated as alternative coagulants for the removal of organic matter of different molecular sizes in contaminated water. The flocculation efficiency of Ti-salt was comparable to those of $FeCl_3$ and $Al_2(SO_4)_3$ salts, commonly used coagulants. Incinerated sludge-$TiO_2$ showed higher surface area and photocatalytic activity than commercially available $TiO_2$. Metal-doped forms were produced by adding coagulant aids such as iron (Fe-), aluminium (Al-) and (Ca-) calcium salts during Ti-salt flocculation to increase pH. Ca- and Al- doped $TiO_2$ showed very high photocatalytic activity compared to Fe-doped $TiO_2$. When tested in a pilot scale plant for treatment of dye wastewater to check practical feasibility of the novel process, the removal ratio of the chemical oxygen demand was comparable to those of commonly used coagulants but the settling of sludge was faster. The $TiO_2$ generated after sludge incineration showed a high photocatalytic activity for degradation of volatile organic compounds and increased the rate of hydrogen production by water photosplitting. $TiCl_4$ coagulant and $TiO_2$ produced from different water sources with different concentrations had low acute toxicity compared to heavy metals and commercial $TiO_2$ when examined based on D. Magna mortality. This paper presents the production, characterisation and the photoactivity of $TiO_2$ produced from Ti-salt flocculated sludge. Different case studies are discussed to highlighted recent advances in this field.

  • Compared to other industries, pulp and paper industry use a lot of water. As a result, a large amount of the waste water is discharged in the pulp and paper industry. This study was investigated to prevent the environmental pollution terribly faced with our society nowadays. In the waste water of pulp and paper, there are so many things in the waste water, like fiber, filler, and other organic solvent etc. so we must remove them from our environment. This study was investigated to experiment on test of impressed filtration with the kind and quantity of coagulant and the variance of pressure. In this study, we used feds, alums. $CaCl_2$, polymer as a coagulant and these pressure was 49, 98, 147, 196kpa. According to this study, we measured the speed of filtration and turbidity, measuring filtrated water. According to the values, we know the fact that as the consistency of coagulant and pressure were high, the filtration was good.
