  • There are several major practical consequences of stress-dependent properties of unbound pavement foundations. Among those are the stress-dependent modulus and Poisson's ratio's that may change, the compressive stresses that are generated in materials under load, the stiffening and strengthening effect of repeated loading to progressively increase the unbound pavement materials resistance to permanent deformation. In order to study these, the algorithm for predicting deformations on conventional flexible pavements are proposed and the stress-dependent effects on layer deformation are presented in this paper by the developed stress-dependent finite element analysis program with the selected models.

  • This paper will present a simple approach (or predicting layer deformation of unbound pavement materials with stress-dependent material properties. The approach is based on an uncoupled formulation in which the resilient and deformation response of unbound materials are considered separately. As a result, an uncoupled approach incorporating a resilient stiffness and Poisson's ratio model is able to simulate field measured deformation in pavement foundations. In addition, a sensitivity analysis is conducted to identify the significant factors in the stress-dependent modulus and Poison's ratio model. The predicted trends of deformation from this analysis are presented and discussed.

  • Resilient deformation characteristics on unbound pavement materials have been adopted for design and nonlinear analysis of pavement structure under traffic loadings. However, relatively few studies have been done on the nonlinear resilient behavior of unbound pavement materials in Korea. In addition, only the limited information is available for estimating the resilient modulus values on unbound materials. In this study, a laboratory resilient-deformation test under repeated loadings is performed in order to fud a proper constitutive model that correlates the resilient modulus with stress state from field condition. Finally, a finite element analysis is conducted for evaluating the nonlinear characteristics of unbound materials. and the pavement performance respectively.

  • The Physical and chemical properties or dry acorn starch(DS), detannined acorn starch (DTS) and defatted and detannined acorn starch(Drn) were investigated. Ail acorn starch sample, observed by a scanning electron microscope, showed a hemispherical shape ud its size was about $5{\sim}10{\mu}m$ in diameter. It had a little change on the pasting temperature of DS, DTS and DFTS but peak viscosity of DTS was somewhat higher than that of n. Flow behavior of gelatinized starch pastes showed a pseudoplastic behavior and flow behavior index was lower than unit. The consistency coefficient showed concentraion and temperature dependency. The activation energies of DS, DTS and DFTS were $2.09{\sim}3.58Kcal/g\;{\cdot}\;mol and time dependent characteristic of acorn starch samples showed thixotrpic behavior.

  • Prism plane slip {11$\bar{2}$0}1/3{$\bar{1}$120} location velocity in sapphire ($\alpha$-Al$_2$O$_3$) single crystals was measured by etch-pit method. The dislocation velocities were measured as a function of temperature and stress between $1150^{\circ}C$ and $1400^{\circ}C$ for engineering stresses in the range 140 to 250 MPa. The dependence of temperature and stress in dislocation velocity was investigated. The activation energy for dislocation velocity was determined to be 4.2$\pm$0.4 eV. On the other hand, the stress exponent (m) describing the stress dependence of dislocation velocities was in the range of 4.5$\pm$0.8. Through this experiments, it was reconfirmed that the basal plane in sapphire single crystals has the 3-fold symmetry.

  • Implementing the generalized Hoek-Brown failure criterion in the framework of the Mohr-Coulomb criterion requires the calculation of the equivalent friction angle and cohesion. In the conventional method based on the Balmer (1952)'s theory, the tangential instantaneous friction angle and cohesion are expressed in terms of the minimum principal stress ${\sigma}_3$, which does not provide the information about the dependency of the equivalent parameters on the hydrostatic pressure and the stress path. In this study, this defect of the conventional method has been overcome by representing the equivalent parameters in terms of stress invariants. Through the example implementation of the new method, the influence of the magnitude of the hydrostatic pressure and the Lode angle on the tangential instantaneous friction angle and cohesion is investigated. It turns out that the tangential instantaneous friction angle is maximum when the stress condition is triaxial extension, while the tangential cohesion is maximum when the stress condition is triaxial compression. The dependency of the equivalent Mohr-Coulomb strength parameters on the hydrostatic pressure and the Lode angle tends to be more substantial for the favorable rockmass of larger GSI value.

  • Changes of the hydraulic conductivity resulting from the redistribution of stresses by underground excavation are examined using the strain-dependent hydraulic conductivity modification relation, where the modulus reduction ratio and induced strain are the major parameters. The modulus reduction ratio is defined in terms of RMR(Rock Mass Rating) to represent the full gamut of rock mass condition. Though shear dilation has the effect on the modification of hydraulic conductivity, the extent of it depends on RMR When the extensional strain is applied to a fracture, the hydraulic conductivity increases with the decrease of RMR Loading configuration has the effect on the modification of hydraulic conductivity, where the differential stress mode with a magnitude of the minimum principal stress $($\sigma$_x)$ fixed and a magnitude of the maximum principal stress $($\sigma$_y)$ varied is found to exert the greatest effect on the change of hydraulic conductivity.

  • A number of true triaxial tests on rock samples have been conducted since the late 1960 and their results strongly suggest that the intermediate principal stress has a considerable effect on rock strength. Based on these experimental evidence, various 3-D rock failure criteria accounting for the effect of the intermediate principal stress have been proposed. Most of the 3-D failure criteria, however, are focused on the phenomenological description of the rock strength from the true triaxial tests, so that the associated strength parameters have little physical meaning. In order to confirm the likelihood that the intermediate principal stress dependency of rock strength is related to the presence of weak planes and their distribution to the preferred orientation, true triaxial tests are simulated with the transversely isotropic rock model. The conventional Mohr-Coulomb criterion is extended to its anisotropic version by incorporating the concept of microstructure tensor. With the anisotropic Mohr-Coulomb criterion, the critical plane approach is applied to calculate the strength of the transversely isotropic rock model and the orientation of the fracture plane. This investigation hints that the spatial distribution of microstructural planes with respect to the principal stress triad is closely related to the intermediate principal stress dependency of rock strength.
