Characteristics of Micro-Particle Separation according to HRT Changes (HRT 변화에 따른 미세입자 분리 특성)

  • Fluid generated within the sonic or ultrasonic waves are reflected by the wall, while the opposite direction forming a predetermined sound wave to the acoustic standing wave is referred to. In this study, the frequency of 1.0 MHz and 2.0 MHz acoustic standing wave generation module is installed in a continuous particle separation device, the laminar flow of influent, taking into account the hydraulic retention time (HRT) in accordance with changes in particle separation characteristics investigated. Operation of a standing wave in the particle separation device about $1.3{\sim}2.8^{\circ}C$ temperature is increased, but did not significantly affect the formation of standing waves. During operation, the HRT 1 hr frequency 1.0 MHz 2 hr, 4 hr longer as the particle separation efficiency (turbidity) were 64.1%, 70.0%, 74.3% and, 2.0 MHz has 58.0%, respectively, depending on HRT, 61.8%, 70.7% in the respectively. That is, the same frequency, the HRT treatment efficiency is 10% or more, depending on differences in generation and, 1.0 MHz frequency, 2 hr, 2.0 MHz 4 hr at about 70% or more of the processing efficiency can be maintained. Frequency of 1.0 MHz and 2.0 MHz operation at the same time, as a result, HRT 1 hr, 2 hr, 4 hr particle separation efficiency of 63.8%, respectively, 70.6%, 77.6%, rather than the generation of standing waves appear continuous HRT is affecting a lot of particles to separate could know.

Analysis of trends in the use of geophysical exploration techniques for underwater cultural heritage (수중문화유산에 대한 지구물리탐사 기법 활용 동향 분석)

  • Korea is surrounded by the sea and has rivers connecting to it throughout the inland areas, which has been a geographical characteristic since ancient times. As a result, there have been exchanges and conflicts with various countries through the sea, and rivers have facilitated the transportation of ships carrying grain, goods paid for by taxes, and passengers. Since the past, the sea and rivers have had a significant impact on the lives of Koreans. Consequently, it is expected that there are many cultural heritages submerged in the sea and rivers, and continuous efforts are being made to discover and preserve them. Underwater cultural heritage is difficult to discover due to its location in the sea or rivers, making direct visual observation and exploration challenging. To overcome these limitations, various geophysical survey techniques are employed. Geophysical survey methods utilize the physical properties of elastic waves, including their reflection and refraction, to conduct surveys such as bathymetry, underwater topography and strata. These techniques detect the physical characteristics of underwater objects and seafloor formation in the underwater environment, analyze differences, and identify underwater cultural heritage located on or buried in the seabed. Bathymetry uses an echo sounder, and an underwater topography survey uses a side-scan sonar to find underwater artifacts lying on or partially exposed to the seabed, and a marine shallow strata survey uses a sub-bottom profiler to find underwater heritages buried in the seabed. However, the underwater cultural heritage discovered in domestic waters thus far has largely been accidental findings by fishermen, divers, or octopus hunters. This study aims to analyze and summarize the latest research trends in equipment used for underwater cultural heritage exploration, including bathymetric surveys, underwater topography surveys and strata surveys. The goal is to contribute to research on underwater cultural heritage investigation in the domestic context.

Feasibility of Ultrasonic Inspection for Nuclear Grade Graphite (원자력급 흑연의 산화 정도에 따른 초음파특성 변화 및 초음파탐상의 타당성 연구)

  • Graphite material has been recognized as a very competitive candidate for reflector, moderator, and structural material for very high temperature reactor (VHTR). Since VHTR is operated up to $900-950^{\circ}C$, small amount of impurity may accelerate the oxidation and degradation of carbon graphite, which results in increased porosity and lowered fracture toughness. In this study, ultrasonic wave propagation properties were investigated for both as-received and degradated material, and the feasibility of ultrasonic testing (UT) was estimated based on the result of ultrasonic property measurements. The ultrasonic properties of carbon graphite were half, more than 5 times, and 1/3 for velocity, attenuation, and signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio respectively. Degradation reduces the ultrasonic velocity slightly by 100 m/s, however the attenuation is about 2 times of as-receive state. The results of probability of detection (POD) estimation based on S/N ratio for side-drilled-hole (SDHs) of which depths were less than 100 mm were merely affected by oxidation and degradation. This result suggests that UT would be reliable method for nondestructive testing of carbon graphite material of which thickness is not over 100 mm. In accordance with the result produced by commercial automated ultrasonic testing (AUT) system, human error of ultrasonic testing is barely expected for the material of which thickness is not over 80 mm.

Characteristics of Particle Separation in Water Using Lab-Scale Acoustic Standing Wave (실험실 규모의 음향정재파를 이용한 수중의 입자분리 특성)

  • Characteristics of particle separation in water using labscale acoustic standing wave were studied. Acoustic standing wave is similar to either sound wave or ultrasonic, which makes a constant wave while returning to the origin by reflector. During that time, particulates dispersed in water are collected on the node of wave, where a sound pressure is zero. Acoustic standing wave transducer as of 28.0 kHz and 1.0 MHz were utilized and $6.8{\mu}m$ kaolin and $100.5{\mu}m$ redmud in average diameter were used as experimental materials in water. Once acoustic standing wave are generated in water, water temperature rises by $0.15{\sim}0.20^{\circ}C/min$ due to a sound pressure. Initial concentration of kaolin and redmud were controlled to have same as of 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5 g/L, respectively. Removal efficiency of the turbidity in a reacting chamber after 5 minutes, when acoustic sound wave was formed in most distinct, was measured to have 18.2~56.2% for kaolin and 23.0~53.6% for redmud at 1.0 MHz. Particle separation was not observed at 28.0 kHz.

Ultrasonic Wave Propagation Analysis for Damage Detection in Heterogeneous Concrete Materials (콘크리트 내부결함 탐지를 위한 초음파 전파 해석)

  • Ultrasonic investigation of damage detection has been widely used for non-destructive testing of various concrete structures. This study focuses on damage detection analysis with the aid of wave propagation in two-phase composite concrete with aggregate (inclusion) and mortar (matrix). To fabricate a realistic simulation model containing a variety of irregular aggregate shapes, the mesh generation technique using an image processing technique was proposed. Initially, the domains and boundaries of the aggregates were extracted from the digital image of a typical concrete cut-section. This enables two different domains: aggregates and mortar in heterogeneous concrete sections, and applied the grids onto these domains to discretize the model. Subsequently, finite element meshes are generated in terms of spatial and temporal requirements of the model size. For improved analysis results, all meshes are designed to be quadrilateral type, and an additional process is conducted to improve the mesh quality. With this simulation model, wave propagation analyses were conducted with a central frequency of 75 kHz of the Mexican hat incident wave. Several void damages, such as needle-shaped cracks and void-shaped holes, were artificially introduced in the model. Finally, various formats of internal damage were detected by implementing energy mapping based signal processing.

Measurement of Backscattering Cross Sections of Live Fish (활어의 후방산란 단면적 측정)

  • The backscattering cross sections of live fish and the probability density function of fish echoes were measured at side aspect. The measurements were made at 40 and 170 in KHz. The specimen fishes on the experiments were two catfish-total length of 16.8cm(L/λ is about 4.5, where the L is length, the λ is the sound wavelength) and 23cm(L/λ, ~6.1), a carp(Cyprinus carpio) of 17.5cm(L/λ, ~4.7), a Telapia(Tilapia mossambica)of 19.5cm(L/λ, ~5.2) and several fishes. Those lengths ranged from 10.7 to 24.0cm. The results of the measured maximum backscattering cross sections were 5.62$\times$10 super(-5) to 7.23$\times$10 super(-4) m super(2). Huang and clay reported that, when the fish was moving gently, the probaiblity density function of the fish echces was approximately the same with the Rayleigh probability density function. Thereafter Ehrenberg et al. also reported that the Rayleigh probability density function on fish was performed at the critical acoustic length ratio or more in theoretical base. Recently Dahl and Mathisen tested the Rayleigh probability density function on fish when the fish-length-to-wavelength ratios were greater than 100. In this paper the experimental result was also not accorded with the Rayleigh probability density function when the fish-length-to-wavelength rations were lower than the critical ratio.

Distribution and characteristics of Quaternary faults in the coastal area of the southeastern Korean Peninsula: Results from a marine seismic survey (해양 탄성파 탐사 결과로 본 한반도 남동부연안 4기 단층의 분포와 특성)

  • High-resolution multichannel seismic data were collected in the coastal area near the Gori nuclear power plant to investigate Quaternary fault pattern and timing. A 12 channel streamer, a sparker, and a portable recorder were used for data acquisition. Because the group interval of the streamer was 6.25 m and the sparker can generate acoustic waves with the frequency content of up to 500 Hz, the data show a significant improvement both in horizontal and vertical resolution. The area surveyed is covered with 30-40 m thick Holocene sediments that constitute the mud belt along the southeastern coast of Korea. The survey area is characterized by the well discriminated Pleistocene and Holocene boundary and shallow gas-charged zones. A number of Quaternary faults were found in the sediment column, that are nearly vertical and extend north-south. The Quaternary faults, arranged at a spacing of a few hundred meters, suggest that they were formed in response to compression, although some of them reveal extensional characteristics. Locally, faults disrupt Incised-channel fills that are interpreted to have formed in the early stage of transgression after the beginning of the Holocene. Seismic sections suggest that shallow gas in the mud belt sediments made its way upward through the fractured fault planes. The tectonism responsible for the opening of the East Sea has not persisted since the late Miocene, but vigorous Quaternary faulting activity in the vicinity of the southeastern Korean Peninsula indicates that tectonic stability has yet to be achieved in this region underlain by the hotter than normal mantle.

멀티빔 자료를 이용한 웹기반의 3차원 해저 지형 가시화

  • 밀티빔 음향 측심기 (Multibeam Echo Sounder)는 탐사선에 수직방향으로 해저면을 주사(Swath)하여, 한번의 송수신(Ping)으로 다중의 빔자료를 얻을 수 있는 측심기로, 해저면에 반사되어 되돌아오는 음파의 음압을 기록하고, 사이드 스캔 소나 자료도 동시에 취득하는 기능을 가지고 있으므로, 측심된 해저 지형(Bathymetry)과 해저 지형을 덮고 있는 해저면의 퇴적 상황(Sediment Environment)도 동시에 얻을 수 있는 다목적 측심기이다. 본 논문에서는 L3사의 Sea Beam 2100 멀티빔 음향 측심기를 통해 얻은 자료를 처리하여, 3차원 공간 데이터인 DEM(Digital Elevation Model)을 생성하고, VRML을 이용한 웹상에서의 해저 지형 가시화를 통해, 세계 어느 곳에서나 웹을 통하여 쉽게 정보를 공유할 수 있는 3차원 해저 지리 정보 시스템의 구현을 목적으로 한다. 멀티빔 음향 측심기를 통해 얻어진 자료는 항해 자료 보정, 음속 보정, 빔 좌표 계산과 분리, 오측심 자료 제거, 조석 보정 등의 단계를 거쳐 측심자료의 정확도 및 신뢰도를 높이는 과정을 거치게 된다. 보정된 멀티빔 음향 측심자료는 무작위 점 사상(Point Topology)으로 산재 되어 있는 빔 자료를 임의의 단위영역으로 변환하는 과정을 거쳐야 하는데, 이 과정을 격자화라고 한다. 자료의 격자화를 통해 3차원 공강 데이터인 DEM 파일을 제작하고, 이 DEM 파일과 음압 영상을 이용해 웹상에서의 3차원 해저 지형의 가시화를 실현한다. 웹상에서의 3차원 지형 가시화에서 방대한 양의 지형 데이터는 데이터 전송 시간과 렌더링 시간에 치명적인 문제이다. 따라서, 렌더링 시간과 데이터 전송 시간을 단축시키기 위한, 지형 자료의 LOD(Level of Detail)를 통해, VRML을 이용한 보다 효과적인 웹상에서의 3차원 해저 지형의 가시화를 실현한다.면 기업은 고객으로 공간적인 제약으로 인한 불신을 불식시키는 신뢰감을 주게 된다. 이러한 고객서비스 향상과 물류비용 절감은 사이버 쇼핑몰이 전국 어디서나 우리의 안방에서 자연스럽게 점할 수 있는 상황을 만들 것이다.SP가 도입되어, 설계업무를 지원하기위한 기본적인 시스템 구조를 구상하게 된다. 이와 함께 IT Model을 구성하게 되는데, 객체지향적 접근 방법으로 Model을 생성하고 UML(Unified Modeling Language)을 Tool로 사용한다. 단계 4)는 Software Engineering 관점으로 접근한다. 이는 최종산물이라고 볼 수 있는 설계업무 지원 시스템을 Design하는 과정으로, 시스템에 사용될 데이터를 Design하는 과정과, 데이터를 기반으로 한 기능을 Design하는 과정으로 나눈다. 이를 통해 생성된 Model에 따라 최종적으로 Coding을 통하여 실제 시스템을 구축하게 된다.the making. program and policy decision making, The objectives of the study are to develop the methodology of modeling the socioeconomic evaluation, and build up the practical socioeconomic evaluation model of the HAN projects including scientific and technological effects. Discovery of the Dmitri Donskoi ship near Ulleung Island(East Sea of Korea), using geophysical surveys (물리탐사기술을 이용한 침몰선 Dmitri Donskoi호 탐사)

  • Dmitri Donskoi, the Russian cruiser launched in 1883, is known to have sunk near Ulleung Island (East Sea, Korea) on May 29, 1905, while it was participating in the Russo-Japanese War. In order to find this ship, information about its possible location was obtained from Russian and Japanese maritime historical records. The supposed location of the ship was identified, and we conducted a five-year geophysical survey from 1999 to 2003. A reconnaissance three-dimensional topographic survey of the sea floor was carried out using multi-beam echo sounder, marine magnetometer, and side-scan sonar. An anomalous body identified through the initial reconnaissance survey was identified by a detailed survey using a remotely operated vehicle, deep-sea camera, and the mini-submarine Pathfinder. Interpretation of the acquired data showed that the ship is hanging on the side of a channel, at the bottom of the sea 400 m below sea level. The location is about 2 km from Port Jeodong, Uleung Island. We discovered 152 mm naval guns and other war materiel still attached to the hull of the ship. In addition, the remnants of the steering gear and other machinery that were burnt during the final action were found near the hull. Strong magnetic fields, resulting from the presence of volcanic rocks in the survey area, affected the resolution of the magnetic data gathered; as a result, we could not locate the ship reliably using the magnetic method. Severe sea floor topography in the gully around the hull gave rise to diffuse reflections in the side-scan sonar data, and this prevented us from identifying the anomalous body with the side-scan sonar technique. However, the sea-floor image obtained from the multi-bean echo sounder was very useful in verifying the location of the ship.

Underwater acoustic communication performance in reverberant water tank (잔향음 우세 수조 환경에서의 수중음향 통신성능 분석)

  • Underwater acoustic wave in shallow water is propagated through multipath that has a large delay spread causing Inter-Symbol Interference (ISI) and these characteristics deteriorate the performance in the communication system. In order to analyze the communication performance and investigate the correlation with multipath delay spread in a reverberant environment, an underwater acoustic communication experiment using Binary Phase-Shift Keying (BPSK) signals with symbol rates from 100 sym/s to 8000 sym/s was conducted in a 5 × 5 × 5 m3 water tank. The acoustic channels in a well-controlled tank environment had the characteristics of dense multipath delay spread due to multiple reflections from the interfaces and walls within the tank and showed the maximum excess delay of 40 ms or less, and the Root Mean Squared (RMS) delay spread of 8 ms or less. In this paper, the performances of Bit Error Rate (BER) and output Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) were analyzed using four types of communication demodulation techniques. And the parameter, Symbol interval to Delay spread Ratio in reverberant environment (SDRrev), which is the ratio of symbol interval to RMS delay spread in the reverberant environment is defined. Finally, the SDRrev was compared to the BER and the output SNR. The results present the reference symbol rate in which high communication performance can be guaranteed.
