The Effect of Damping of a Two-degree-of-freedom Model for the Disc Brake Squeal Noise (2자유도계 모델을 이용한 디스크 브레이크 스퀼 소음에 대한 댐핑의 영향에 관한 연구)

  • A two-degree-of-freedom model is suggested to describe basic dynamical behaviors of the interaction between the pad and the disc of a disc brake system. Although a pad (and a disc) has many modes of vibration in practice, only one mode of each component Is considered. In this paper, a linear analysis is performed by means of the stability analysis to show various conditions for the system to become unstable, and is based on the assumption that the existence of limit cycle (this corresponds to an unstable equilibrium point inside the limit cycle) represents the squeal state of the disc brake system. The results of the stability analysis show that the damping of the disc is as much Important as that of the pad, whereas the damping of the pad only is considered In most practical situations.

Study on the Design of Butyl Rubber Compound and Noise Reduction System for Sound Insulation (소음 차단 성능 향상을 위한 부틸 탄성체 배합 및 진동제어 시스템 디자인 연구)

  • The noise between floors of apartment has been hot issue nowadays. In order to improve the noise insulation performance, we proposed the antivibration rubber system which can be applied to the floor system for sound insulation. Among various types of elastomer, butyl rubber showed the good aging characteristic, low rebound resilience and high damping factor. Thus, the butyl rubber was selected as a basic rubber for antivibration rubber system. The effects of type and loading amounts of carbon black on antivibration properties of butyl rubber were studied. The increase of surface area and the content of carbon black resulted in high bound rubber fraction, high mechanical property, low rebound resilience, and high damping factor of butyl rubber. Based on the results of this study, the new antivibration rubber was prepared and applied to the floor system for sound insulation. The impact sounds of floor system proposed in this study were 40 dB and 43 dB in cases of light weight and heavy weight impact sound, respectively.

Unstable Brake Pad Mode Due to Friction-velocity Slope (마찰 곡선에 의한 불안정 브레이크 패드 모드 해석)

  • The brake squeal propensity due to the friction-velocity curve is numerically investigated. The finite element models for the disc and pad are correlated with the modal test. In the friction-engaged system modeling, the friction function is linearized at the equilibrium. The damping term induced by friction-velocity slope is incorporated into the equations of motion. In the complex eigenvalue analysis, it is found that the pad shear mode is very sensitive to the friction curve. The results shows that the squeal propensity of the pad shear mode can be controlled by the design parameters such as pressure and stiffness.

  • The characteristics of friction noise due to the friction-velocity curve is experimentally investigated through the pin-on-disk setup. The rotation speed of the disk is controlled in order to produce the sliding speed variation. Then, the friction coefficient and the corresponding friction noise are simultaneously measured with respect to the sliding speed between the steel disk and aluminum pin. The experimental results show that the negative friction-velocity slope is essential in generating friction noise.

  • This study provides the numerical finite-element method(FEM) estimating the friction noise induced by the negative slope in the friction-velocity curve. The friction noise due to the friction-velocity curve is experimentally investigated through the pin-on-disk setup. The measured squeal frequency is estimated by FEM. The friction curve is measured by the friction test, then it is applied to the complex eigenvalue analysis. The results shows that the experimental squeal frequency can be determined by the FEM analysis. Also, it is emphasized that the negative friction-velocity slope is essential in generating friction noise in the pin-on-disc system.

Drag Coefficient Variations of an Oscillating NACA 0012 Airfoil (진동하는 NACA 0012 에어포일에서의 항력계수 변화)

  • An experimental study was performed in order to investigate the influence of Reynolds number on the drag coefficient variations of an oscillating airfoil. A NACA 0012 airfoil was sinusoidally pitched at the quarter chord point with an oscillating amplitude of ${\pm}6^{\circ}$. The free-stream velocities were 1.98, 2.83 and 4.03 m/s and the corresponding chord Reynolds numbers were $2.3{\times}10^4$, $3.3{\times}10^4$ and $4.8{\times}10^4$, respectively. The drag coefficient was calculated from the ensemble average velocity measured by an X-type hot-wire probe(X-type, 55R51) in the near-wakes region. In the case of Re=$2.3{\times}10^4$, variation of drag coefficient shows a negative damping (counter-clockwise variation), which implies an unstable state which could be excited by aerodynamic force, whereas the drag coefficient represents the positive damping (clockwise variation) as the Reynolds number increases from Re=$3.3{\times}10^4$ to $4.8{\times}10^4$. Hence, the drag coefficient variations show significant differences between Re=$2.3{\times}10^4$ and $4.8{\times}10^4$이다.

  • In the search for broadband damping composites, it is desirable to have polymers with a broad and high loss region, covering the entire temperature and frequency range of interest. Interpenetrating polymer networks, IPN's, are materials composed of two or more crosslinked polymers intimately and irrevocably interwinded. The resulting distribution of microenviron-ments can result in a materials with a high mechanical loss broad end over that of either polymer component alone. In this study, several series of copolymer, crosslinked copolymer and copolymer/copolymer IPN's were synthesized for possible use as broadband damping materials. Then their dynamic tensile properties were measured and compared with the damping properties of sandwich composites. Dynamic mechanical analysis showed that the temperature of loss peak may be varied over a wide temperature range with formulation. The compatibility of IPN`s was depended on the compatibility of A and B polymers as well as crosslink density. The damping factor(tan ${\delta}_c$) of composites became greater when a polymer of approximate storage module(E`) range of 5X10$^7$ to 10$^9$ dyne/cm$^2$ and large tan ${\delta}$ at the same time was used. The damping properities of poly (2-EHA80-co-St20)/poly(2-EHA20-co-St80) IPN`s crosslinked with 3%-DEGDM were relatively better over a broad temperature range.
