Purpose: The purpose of this research was to examine the effects of musical therapy and the differences of two different ways of musical therapy: the closed musical therapy using a headset and the open musical therapy using cassette player. Methods: his study was designed with the non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design. The research cases were 60 spinal and epidural anesthesia surgery patients at K University Hospital in C city from January 3, to March 31, 2005. We measured trait & state anxiety, blood sugar level, vital signs. The group was divided into two: experimental and control group. Results: 1) There are no significant differences between an experimental group and a control group in homogeneity test. 2) We can see that musical therapy during operations stabilizes blood pressure, and reduces sugar level in blood, and decreases psychological anxiety. 3) And the closed musical therapy has more obvious and significant effects than the open musical therapy. Conclusion: We could conclude our study here saying musical therapy during operations is necessary in easing patients' anxieties. More advanced researches on the subject are required to prove validity of the findings in our pilot study.
Purpose: The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of music therapy according to preferred music and to identify the effect of duration time and starting point of music therapy on anxiety and vital signs in spinal anesthesia operations. Method: These subjects were categorized into three groups based on the order of the date of operation. Data on anxiety and vital signs for this study were collected from them. The collected data were analyzed by $X^2$-test, t-test, paired t-test and ANCOVA. Result: The results of this study showed that preferred music, differences of duration times and starting points of music therapy didn't make significant differences in anxiety and vital signs among the three groups. However for anxiety, there was a meaningful difference within three groups. This result indicates even randomly chosen music by nurses considering the patients' age makes a meaningful difference in anxiety. Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, the conclusion can be made that music therapy is a useful nursing implementation to reduce anxiety in patients undergoing operations with spinal anesthesia.
Purpose: Music therapy is a non-pharmacological treatment of the behavioral and psychological symptoms. This study was conducted to contribute to the rehabilitation of patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease in the areas of functionality, emotionality and sociability. Methods: The study included 35 participants, aged between 52 and 77 years, who were diagnosed with idiopathic Parkinson's disease (IPD) and reported suffering from depression, chronic illness anticipated stigma, and worrying about quality of life. The patients were recruited from the department of outpatient neurology at School of Medicine, D University in B Metropolitan City. Group music therapy was performed for nine weeks. The results were analyzed by repeated measures ANOVA. Results: In terms of stigma, there were significant differences between two groups and time (p<.05). Analysis of the interaction between time and service method revealed significant differences (p<.05). Between time, and the interaction between time and service method revealed significant differences in terms of quality of life (p<.05). Conclusion: The results suggest that group music therapy will be effective on the psychosocial well-being of patients with Parkinson's disease living in assisted and independent living communities.

Purpose: The present study was done to examine the effect of music therapy on anxiety and pain in patients for whom a ureteral stent was inserted under local anesthesia. Method: The participants in this study were 22 patients who received a ureteral stent at the Day Surgery Center of C University Hospital during the period from May to October in 2006. The patients were divided into a control group (n=11) and an experimental group (n=11). For the experimental group, music was played according to their musical preference using headphones. The music was provided from the point when the patient took the posture for the operation and was covered with a sterilized drape to the point when the cystoscope was removed after finishing the operation. The control group was only provided with ordinary nursing services. Results: The results show that the provision of music therapy to these patients is effective in reducing the patients' salivary cortisol and Vas-anxiety score and stabilizing their systolic blood pressure. Conclusion: We conclude that music therapy can be actively used as a nursing intervention for reducing anxiety in patients who receive operations under local anesthesia.
Purpose: The present study was to investigate the effect of music therapy on anxiety, nausea, and vomiting in patients undergoing total body irradiation (TBI) for hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Method: A untreated control group with pretest and posttest was used in this study. A total of 35 patients receiving TBI for HSCT were recruited from a medical center at a university in Korea. The music therapy taking for 15-20 minutes per a time was performed twice a day for three days while the patients in the experimental group were undergoing the TBI. Results: The scores of state anxiety, nausea and vomiting tended to increase in the control group as compare with those in the experimental group. The patients in the control group had been administerd antiemetics more often than those in the experimental group. The levels of systolic and diastolic blood pressure and the pulse rates in the experimental group tended to decrease after the experiment. However, there was no statistically significant differences in anxiety, nausea, vomiting, blood pressure, and pulse between the groups. Conclusion: It is suggested to repeat this study with a enough sample size.
Purpose: This study was to examine the effects of music therapy on the levels of anxiety and discomfort in patients undergoing gastrofibroscopy. Method: This study was equivalent control group pre-post test design. The subjects were 61 patients who visited H hospital internal medicine department for gastrofibroscopy ; 31 were randomly selected for the control group and the remaining 30, for the experimental group. Result: 1. The experimental group who used music therapy showed a significantly lower level of anxiety during gastrofibroscopy than the control group. 2. The experimental group revealed a lesser change in pulse rate between pre and post gastrofibroscopy than the control group. 3. There was a significant difference in the levels of subjective and objective discomfort during gastrofibroscopy between the two groups. Conclusion: The results suggested that music therapy may help relieve anxiety and discomfort for patients undergoing gastrofibroscopy. These results showed that the use of music aided in the reduction of anxiety and discomfort during the unpleasant diagnostic procedure and, testing the effectiveness of music therapy deserves further study in other hospital settings.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of music therapy on postpartum stress and maternal attachment of puerperal women. Methods: The participants were puerperal women who agreed to participate in this study and through a convenience sampling, 84 puerperal women were recruited (40 in the experimental group, 44 in the control group). After measuring postpartum stress and maternal attachment, music therapy was provided to the experimental group over 60min, three times a week, and for 2 weeks. Then, postpartum stress and maternal attachment for the experimental and control group were measured again before discharge. The data were analyzed using the SPSS/WIN 14.0 program. Results: The first hypothesis that "the degree of postpartum stress for the experimental group who participated in music therapy would be lower than that of the control group" was accepted. The second hypothesis that "the degree of maternal attachment the experimental group who participated in music therapy would be higher than that of the control group" was accepted. Conclusion: These findings indicate that music therapy has positive influences on decreasing postpartum stress and increasing maternal attachment of puerperal women.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of favorite music therapy on the stress response of hysterectomy patients undergoing general anesthesia. Methods: Date were collected from June 29, 2015 to January 18, 2016 and the participants were 79 hysterectomy patients (experimental group 40 and control group 39). The experimental group listened to their favorite music through earphones from the moment they entered the surgical waiting room until they exited from the post anesthesia care unit. Results: There were statistically significant differences in anxiety (F=15.92, p<.001), systolic blood pressure (F=4.23, p=.008), diastolic blood pressure (F=3.07, p=.033), and heart rate (F=19.93, p<.001) between participants in the experimental group and the control group according to measurement times. Conclusion: The study results show that favorite music therapy considering patients' preferences is effective in reducing anxiety among patients undergoing a hysterectomy under general anesthesia, thus leading to a stable change in their blood pressure and heart rate.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to review and analyze the trend and issues of nursing research on music therapy. This study was aimed to help direct developing better music therapy programs in the future. Method: We reviewed 57 dissertations and published articles from 1983 to Feb. 2005 that were related to music therapy in nursing. Result: Among the 57 published researches on music therapy, 47 (82.5%) were dissertations and 10 (17.5%) were published articles. Among the 57 researches, 55 (96.5%) were experiential researches and 2 (3.5%) were non-experimental researches. Surgical patients were the most popular subject for researches. The number of subject was a minimum of 7 people and maximum of 143 people. Listening to music 41 (74.5%) was the most popular program for music therapy. Among 55 researches, 33 (60.0%) had a music therapy session of 25-60 minutes and this was the most popular time duration of therapy. Among all the 108 dependent variables, 57 (52.8%) were psychological variables, 40 (37.0%) were physical variables and 11 (10.2%) were social-cognitive variables. Conclusion: There is an urgent need to develop systematic music therapy programs with different nursing interventions, as based on theories and principles while considering the physical, psychological, and social characteristic of the subjects.
The objective of this paper is to suggest plans to properly establish and promote the use of hospice music therapy by examining its necessity and how it is being used in Korea. Hospice music therapy is a clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions administered by a professional to alleviate total pains suffered by hospice patients and their families. While the effects of hospice music therapy have been reported by many studies, its meaning and value are still poorly understood in Korea, which explains the lack of related institutions in the nation. Recently policy-wise and legislative efforts have been made to promote hospice and palliative care, which in turn will likely fuel demand for hospice music therapy. Therefore, the meaning and role of hospice music therapy should be defined by major hospice and palliative care institutions and societies, followed by institutional and academic efforts as follows. First, a set of qualification criteria for hospice music therapists should be established to provide proven music therapy interventions to patients and their families. Second, a systematic program offering both theoretical and practical trainings needs to be developed to foster hospice music therapists. Last but not least, clinical studies should be promoted with development of a research road map for hospice music therapy and a standard protocol.
