Analysis and Bioremediation for the Soil Contaminated by Lubricant (윤활유 오염토양의 분석 및 생물학적 복원)

  • As the preservation law of soil environment has reinforced, several soil remediation projects have been performing for railroad sites. One of the main sources of soil contamination is the leakage of diesel from locomotives or underground storage tank. Also, the lubricant used to maintain turnouts causes railroad soil contamination. The purpose of this study was to develop the analysis and the remediation method for lubricant-contaminated soil. The lubricant in the contaminated soil was analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively by TLC (Thin Layer Chromatography) and GC (Gas Chromatography), respectively. The organic pollutants were removed from the soil using microorganisms degrading lubricant. Hereafter it will be necessary to apply this bioremediation method in the railroad field.

An Experimental Study on the Light Transmission Characteristics with Oil Contamination (윤활유 오염에 따른 광투과율 변화에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • Changes in light transmission characteristics caused by various types of oil contaminations were experimentally measured with a built-in type wear monitoring device. Three kinds of iron powders of different size distribution, carbon duct, two kinds of solutions and grease were used for the test contaminants in this work. Light intensity of the transmitted light was measured with the contamination level. Results showed that the transmitted light intensity decreased linearly with the contamination concentration in the oil and the slope was affected by the size distribution. Light attenuation was also caused greatly by carbon dust, water contamination and poly-meric fibers in terms of the light absorption. As a result, it was proved that the optical measurement device could be applicable effectively for detecting any significant change in lubricating oils.

  • This study dealt with some problems occurred in spectrometric oil analysis that has been popularly used for a machine condition monitoring in various fields of industry. One of the problems is that spectrometric technique could not analyze contaminants of large particle (larger than 10 $\mu\textrm{m}$) in lubricating oils. This limitation caused a serious problem in analyzing lubricated machine conditions since wear debris of large size represents better critical machine conditions. In this work, this problem was found to be solved by using a filtration method prior to spectrometric analysis. Another problem could be that spectrometric analysis is incapable of identifying contaminants. This nay mislead the result seriously in practice. This problem was surveyed by analyzing both various types of industrial lubricants and laboratory simulation tests, and the solutions to the problem were suggested in this work.

Feasibility Study on Soil Flushing for Railway Soil Contaminated with Lubricant Oil and Zinc (토양세정 기술을 활용한 윤활유와 아연 복합오염 철도토양의 정화 연구)

  • The feasibility study of soil flushing was investigated to remediate lubricant oil and zinc contaminated railway soil. In this study, mixed washing agents of surfactant and inorganic acid/base were used for the simultaneous removal. The mixed washing agent of non-ionic surfactant and HCl removed 15% of the lubricant oil and 40% of zinc, respectively. Alkaline-enhanced soil washing process increased the removal of lubricant oil up to 40%. This is because alkaline solution reduced the interfacial tension between water phase and lubricant oil phase due to the soap formation reaction. To simulate in-situ soil flushing for the remediation of railroad-related contamination, two dimensional soil flushing was carried out based on the results of batch soil washing. In the soil flushing, the removal efficiencies of lubricant oil and zinc were 34% and 16%, respectively. Even though the removal efficiency was low, the mixed washing agent can remove metal and lubricant oil simultaneously.

  • This study has been investigated for characteristic of removal on the effect of changes in soil moisture, microwave power, and temperature through the decomposition of oil-contaminated soil under high temperature conditions with high temperature heating elements and microwave. A lubricating oil having long carbocyclic(C18-C50) commonly known as a non-resolvable material was treated and the efficient for removal of TPH(Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon) obtained 85.2% at 6 kW and $700^{\circ}C$ and thus the contaminant was found to be removed to 1788 mg/kg for 40 minutes. In case of contaminated soil by light oil and gasoline, the amount of removal was achieved with 567 mg/kg at 6 kW, 500 for 20 minutes that corresponds to reach 98.4% of treatment efficient. In addition, non-resolvable materials contaminated by oil reached TPH concentration on 2,000 mg/kg of worrisome level of soil contamination in the 3-zone at 6kW, $700^{\circ}C$, and 30 minutes, and processing cost at this time was about 8,173 won per ton.

  • Large hydraulic excavator weighted 90 tons used the several pumps installed in parallel to use the hydraulic pump driving gearbox to improve fuel consumption by improving the energy efficiency of the hydraulic system. Gearbox connected to hydraulic pump supply the mechanical output to the high pressure and low pressure pump to be supplied by torque and rotation, which are the mechanical power, through a input shaft connected to large size engine of the excavator. So, gearbox connected to hydraulic pump is same as main artery in the human body and is required long life because it operates the hydraulic pump continuously during operating the engine. This study had used oil contamination analysis method to check the wear characteristics of the gearbox and frequency response characteristic analysis method to check the failure of the teeth failures of gearbox, while the test equipment adopted by the electrical feedback method to reduce the energy consumption was operating for the life assessment, in which the required power was 600 kW input power.

  • Recently, there have been reports of severe symptoms of wear in bearings due to foreign substances mixed in lubricants. Therefore, studying the effects of foreign substances (such as combustion products and metallic debris) on the wear characteristics of journal bearings and proposing appropriate management standards for lubricant cleanliness have become necessary. Studies on the effect of particle size and concentration of foreign substances on surface damage have actively progressed in the recent times. These studies indicate the possibility of foreign substances causing direct wear of bearing surfaces. However, experiments conducted until now involve only basic tests such as the Pin-on-Disk test instead of those involving real bearing systems. This study experimentally examines the damage to the surface of a journal bearing due to foreign substances (combustion products and alumina) mixed with the lubricant, as well as the effect of the type and size of particles on its wear characteristics. The study uses an experimental journal bearing similar to a real bearing system for conducting the lubrication test. Hydrodynamic Lubrication (HL) numerical analysis, experiment results, and film parameters are used for calculating the operating conditions required for achieving the desired film thickness, and the results of the analysis are modified for considering the surface roughness. The run-time of the experiment is 10 min including the stabilization process. The experiment results show that alumina particles larger than the minimum film thickness cause significant surface damage.

Recycling Improvement Plans through Analysis of the Present Status of Used oil (폐유 현황 분석 및 재활용 증진 방안)

  • The number of used oil refining companies has been increased and it causes shortage of the volume of used oil per recycling company. In addition, the number of used oil collecting companies has been increased and it caused excessive competition among companies with excessive costs. Companies use not only proper used oil but also low quality used oil because of shortage of supply. It is the reason of environmental pollution. Also excessive competition brings high cost of refined oil and it becomes a burden on the consumer. Therefore, the recycling improvement plans of used oil is needed because of these causes. First of all, importing used oil from the developed countries of OECD is the one of solution to secure a used oil supply. However, imported used oil should meet the international quality standards and it is examined twice by international authority institute such as K-petro in both exporting and importing countries. Second, the cost would be reduced with the relaxation on regulations of used oil refinement. However, regulation to sediment and water should be separated. Sediment should be kept within 2% and water should be kept within 5%. It is the way to relax the regulations of used oil refinement with preventing environmental pollutions. Finally, the standard of used oil for heater should be regulated strictly. To prevent pollutions, used oil for heater is limited to high quality waste lubricating oil. Also the air pollution prevention device has to be installed on heater.
