A restrict jetting air is applied against leakage flow to improve a sealing performance of conventional labyrinth seal. A CFD analysis and sealing experiment are introduced to evaluate a sealing performance of applied model. The base of enhanced sealing is explained as a reducing clearance effect by jetting air. As a result, the applied model can improve the sealing performance of labyrinth seal in spite of the wide leakage clearance.
Some soluble species may not be solubility-limited or congruent-released with the matrix species. For example, during the operation of the nuclear reactor, the fission products can be accumulated in the fuel-cladding gap, voids, and grain boundaries of the fuel rods. In the waste package for spent-fuel placed in a geologic repository, the high solubility species of these fission products accumulated in the“gap”, e.g. cesium or iodine are expected to dissolve rapidly when ground water penetrates fuel rods. The time and space dependent mass transport for high solubility nuclides in the gap is analyzed, and its numerical illustrations are demonstrated. The approximate solution that is valid for all times is developed, and validated by comparison with an asymptotic solution and the solution obtained by the numerical inversion of Laplace transform covering the entire time span.
To investigate a method for calculation of the heating load for environmental designs of horticultural facilities, measurements of total heating load, infiltration rate, and floor heat flux in a large-scale plastic greenhouse were analyzed comparatively with the calculation results. Effects of ground heat exchange and infiltration loss on the greenhouse heating load were examined. The ranges of the indoor and outdoor temperatures were $13.3{\pm}1.2^{\circ}C$ and $-9.4{\sim}+7.2^{\circ}C$ respectively during the experimental period. It was confirmed that the outdoor temperatures were valid in the range of the design temperatures for the greenhouse heating design in Korea. Average infiltration rate of the experimental greenhouse measured by a gas tracer method was $0.245h^{-1}$. Applying a constant ventilation heat transfer coefficient to the covering area of the greenhouse was found to have a methodological problem in the case of various sizes of greenhouses. Thus, it was considered that the method of using the volume and the infiltration rate of greenhouses was reasonable for the infiltration loss. Floor heat flux measured in the center of the greenhouse tended to increase toward negative slightly according to the differences between indoor and outdoor temperature. By contrast, floor heat flux measured at the side of the greenhouse tended to increase greatly into plus according to the temperature differences. Based on the measured results, a new calculation method for ground heat exchange was developed by adopting the concept of heat loss through the perimeter of greenhouses. The developed method coincided closely with the experimental result. Average transmission heat loss was shown to be directly proportional to the differences between indoor and outdoor temperature, but the average overall heat transfer coefficient tended to decrease. Thus, in calculating the transmission heat loss, the overall heat transfer coefficient must be selected based on design conditions. The overall heat transfer coefficient of the experimental greenhouse averaged $2.73W{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}C^{-1}$, which represents a 60% heat savings rate compared with plastic greenhouses with a single covering. The total heating load included, transmission heat loss of 84.7~95.4%, infiltration loss of 4.4~9.5%, and ground heat exchange of -0.2~+6.3%. The transmission heat loss accounted for larger proportions in groups with low differences between indoor and outdoor temperature, whereas infiltration heat loss played the larger role in groups with high temperature differences. Ground heat exchange could either heighten or lessen the heating load, depending on the difference between indoor and outdoor temperature. Therefore, the selection of a reference temperature difference is important. Since infiltration loss takes on greater importance than ground heat exchange, measures for lessening the infiltration loss are required to conserve energy.
A more accurate expression for effective viscosity is obtained using a linear regression of the data from Fukui-Kaneko's model, which are obtained through numerical calculations based on the linearized Boltzmann equation. Veijola and Turowski's expression is adopted as a base function for effective viscosity. The four coefficients in that equation are optimized, and sensitivity analysis is conducted for these coefficients. The results show that the coefficient for the first-order Knudsen number is the most accurate, whereas the coefficient in the exponential of the Knudsen number is the least accurate compared with Fukui-Kaneko's results. The expression for effective viscosity is accurate within 0.02% rms of Fukui-Kaneko's results for the inverse Knudsen numbers from 0.01 to 100 and surface accommodation coefficients ranging from 0.7 to 1.
We analyze the embedded structure of the cooperative research network of innovation studies in Korea by employing the social network methodology. The network covers all the contributing authors of two journals such as JTI and KTIS, which are the representative journals in the area. Across the networks, the following is noted: networks are highly segmented and the link density is low. However, the KTIS network contains a huge component with 131 authors which implies the existence of a strong cooperative research infrastructure. We derived three sub-networks such as technology economics, technology management, and technology policy. The technology policy network has the lowest link density, while the technology management network of KTIS shows relatively high cohesion among the researchers. Simulation analysis for the mean links of networks by author affiliation divided into university and others show no significant difference between the two networks. We also found a higher ratio of linkage within affiliated network than between networks, rejecting our hypothesis that researchers will not discriminate their research partners due to strong governmental inducement of academia-res each-industry cooperation. The explainability of indices from network structure such as structural holes and clustering coefficients on the performance of researchers measured by the number of citations confirms the results reported in Oh, Choi & Kim (2006) which dealt with the research network of information systems.
This study investigated the pressure difference distribution and the flow characteristics among room, ancillary room, and stair case by carrying out the numerical simulations on the air flow inside the pressurized air supply smoke control system. Numerical simulations were conducted to analyze pressure and velocity distribution of compartments by pressurized air supply for the air-leakage test facility which was built to measure the effective leakage area. In this study, the leakage of air was considered by locating the narrow slit onto fire door and window of room. Simulated results using this method precisely followed the previous experimental results for the pressure differences between the stair case and ancillary room. Predicted results showed that the local leakage of air rarely affected the overall flow pattern and pressure distribution. Although the average velocity over the door between room and ancillary room satisfied the regulation for fire safety, it was certified the unsafe outflow to ancillary room could be occurred in the local position such as the upper part of the door.

Sealing an oil-air mixture plays important roles to have an enhanced lubrication for high speed spindle. Current work is emphasized on the investigation of the air jet effect on the protective collar type labyrinth seal. To improve the sealing capability of conventional labyrinth seal, air jet is injected against through the leakage flow. It has a combined geometry of a protective collar type and an air jet type. In this study, both of a numerical analysis by CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) and experimental measurements are carried out to verify sealing improvement. Both of the turbulence and the compressible flow model are introduced in CFD analysis. The sealing effect of the leakage clearance and the air jet magnitude are studied for various parameter in the experiment. The results of pressure drop in the experiment match reasonably to those of the simulation by introducing a flow coefficient. Effects of sealing improvement are explained as decreasing of effective leakage clearance by air jetting. Thus, sealing effect is improved by amount of air jetting even though clearance becomes larger.
This study integrates personality trait theory to empirically Investigate the corporate strategy in Korean venture firms. This study predicts that type A/B, locus of control(internal/external), and risk-taking/avoiding will be positively associated with corporate strategy selection. Corporate strategy selection consists of aggressive entry strategy and defensive niche market strategy. Data obtained from a survey of 87 venture business firms is used to construct final variable measures and test the hypothesized relationships. The statistical result shows that type A, internal, and risk-taking CEOs positively associated with aggressive entry strategy, and type B, external, and risk-avoiding CEOs positively associated with defensive niche market strategy. Additional analysis(multiple regression model) to test relatively importance of independents is used.
Ultraviolet sterilizers (UVS) are widely used in restaurants, cafeterias and catering businesses in Korea. The proper application of UVS, however, is still questionable since no studies have clearly identified their efficacy and safety, while regulations and regulatory management systems are yet to be established. In the present study, the efficacy of UVS were investigated by measuring spatial UV intensity inside five commercially operated UVS. The operating safety parameters were also checked by measuring leaked UV intensity. The UV intensities were inversely proportional to distance from the UV lamp within 25 cm, and to the square of the distance exceeding 25 cm. The UV intensities in commercial UVS varied with the distance from UV lamp and the incident angle, highlighting efficacy and stability concerns. Notable leakage was detected through the door gaps of a studied UVS, which also brought about safety concerns. Allowable working distances for the UV leaking UVS were suggested based on international standards.

How has the use of academic journals changed since the academic library purchase policy changed from selective journals based on core journals to package purchases by big deal? The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of supply and size of academic journals in university libraries on the use of journals. For this purpose, this study used the actual usage statistics of e-journals of K Academic Libraries during 2013-2015. The analysis shows that there is a so-called long-tail shape in which demand shifts to niche products that are effective in online platforms. Analysis of the use of academic journals by year for three years showed that the use of electronic journals in K Academic Libraries appeared to be a perfect Pareto shape, which is concentrated in the top 20% of journals. In particular, in 2015, the top 5% of journals accounted for nearly 80% of the total usage. Despite the changes in the supply method and size of academic journals, users' use of journals was still concentrated in core journals.
