  • This paper proposes a new finite element formulation based on enhanced first-order shear deformation theory including the transverse normal strain effect via the mixed formulation (EFSDTM-TN) for the effective thermo-mechanical analysis of laminated composite structures. The main objective of the EFSDTM-TN is to provide an accurate and efficient solution in describing the thermo-mechanical behavior of laminated composite structures by systematically establishing the relationship between two independent fields (displacement and transverse stress fields) via the mixed formulation. Another key feature is to consider the thermal strain effect without additional unknown variables by introducing a refined transverse displacement field. In the finite element formulation, an eight-node isoparametric plate element is newly developed to implement the advantage of the EFSDTM-TN. Numerical solutions for the thermo-mechanical behavior of laminated composite structures are compared with those available in the open literature to demonstrate the numerical performance of the proposed finite element model.

  • To analyze accurately the free vibration of a structure by using the finite element method (FEM), we model the structure as a numerical model with many degrees-of-freedom. However the FEM needs much computation time and storage in this case. The authors developed the finite element-transfer stiffness coefficient method (FE-TSCM) for overcoming the drawback of the FEM. In this paper, the authors apply the FE-TSCM to the in-plane free vibration analysis of plates with various shapes. Two numerical examples, a rectangular plate and a triangular plate, are used to compare the results of the FE-TSCM and the FEM. Through the numerical calculation, we confirm that the FE-TSCM can be applied to the plates with various shapes and is effective to in-plane free vibration analysis of plates.

  • Three-dimensional structural analysis system for nuclear containment building is presented in this paper. This system includes high-performance plate/shell elements as finite element library. It also adopts numerical modeling technique for unbonded tendon as well as bonded tendon in prestressed concrete structures. This system is constructed by connecting several in-house program to a commercial program DIANA, and then is capable of performing nonlinear analysis for ultimate pressure capacity of nuclear containment building. Finally, three-dimensional structural analysis of CANDU-type containment building is carried out in order to test the reliability of this system. These numerical results are compared with reference values, which obtained from axisymmetric structural analysis.

  • Accurate load-carrying capacities and moment distributions of thin circular plates are obtained for clamped or simply-supported boundary condition under various concentrated circular loadings. The material is regarded as perfectly-plastic based on an arbitrary yield function such as the Tresca yield function, the Johansen yield function, and the farmily of .betha.-norms which possesses the von Mises yield function and the Frobenius norm. To obtain the lower bound solutions, a maximization formulation is derived and implemented for efficient numerical calculation with a finite difference method and the modified Newton's method. The numerical results demonstrate plastic collapse behavior of circular plates and provide their design criteria.

  • For a variety of elastic-plastic stress fields of plane strain specimens, many research works verified the validity of J-T approach. To generalize the validity of J-T method, however, further investigations are needed for more practical 3D structures than the idealized geometries as plane strain specimens. In this work, selecting two main types of structures such as plate and straight pipe, we perform 3D finite element(FE) modeling, and accompanying elastic, elastic-plastic FE analyses. We then study the validity of J-T application to 3D structures, and present some useful informations for the design or assessment of pipe welds by comparing the stress fields from the detailed 3D FE analyses to those predicted with J-T two parameters.

  • A branched crack in a semi-infinite plate under uniform tension and bending moment is considered in this study By using the superposition, the stress and moment intensity factors for the branched crack subjected to uniform tension and bending moment we evaluated. The stress intensity factors we obtained by using the finite element method and the J-based mutual integral. The moment intensity factors are calculated by extrapolating the values of the moment new the crack tip. Numerical results lot the normalized stress and moment Intensity factors we shown as functions of the ratio of branched crack length to main crack length and the branching angle.
